Wild Camping spots in Ireland are hard to find. This video looks at how we found this wild camping spot and several others as well just by asking among our network of friends both in life, online and at work.
If you are equipped to leave no trace then why be shy about asking. We bring all we need with us, including a fire pit and a chemical toilet, and we leave nothing behind us beyond our tracks.
This is what we refer to when we say Network Camping. These videos are not designed to show you where we camped but to prove that just by asking around you can find your own hidden camping spot gems.
Don’t ask where this is or who owns this. Ask who do you know, who can you ask and where will your next network camping spot be.

Wow I have to say this is probably the best camping video I have seen. The life and scenery there are amazing, but the 3 of you together immersed in the moment is so beautiful. Thank you

Hey Marc, what a great comment to receive. Thank you. It means a lot of course. It was a special trip and one I was determined to do justice to with this video. These things take time to create and I do so happily, but comments like this sure do motivate the next one. Happy trails Marc, best of luck finding the adventures, people and places that bring these things to life.

What an absolute belter of a video! A point about Network camping in general, its great if you're from the country and know a lot of land owners to ask, but many people I have met who are into overland camping, they are foreign, like ourselves. However, that is no reason to be worried. We simply asked at houses and explained we looked on google maps and the area looked beautiful, we explained we are responsible, that we leave no trace, and wanted to ask for permission. Often the landowner would guide us to an even better place on their land. Only twice did we have any issue with land owners, and that's because those particular individuals were nutcases! Oh there was actually a third time, way before we created Donegal Overlanding, we were in Sligo camping in a ground tent in a normal car, as sun was setting a farmer drove over in his pickup and told us to leave and no amount of discussion changed his mind, he was ranting and raving about commonage and that if we did not move he would be back with the lads with shotguns. We took the hint! 🤣

Thank you. This is a really valuable comment given the experience it relates. On the Network Camping - although I have found my childhood connections in the country very useful I am pleased to say that about half of our wild camps have been found through work colleagues in the city. Possibly the videos help but in posing this question but also they can put some land owners off. The reason I don’t tend to show up and just ask is that the thought of finding no where late at night with children onboard is too un-appealing. Maybe stressful. I would like to try it with myself alone or with a few friends though. Ultimately that kind of roaming free is of course the top tier in this. I think Network Camping is the way you find your feet, and you expand and explore from there.

Thank you sincerely John. Genuinely appreciate your feedback. Like I often say the process of putting videos online like this is a bit like telling jokes to an empty room in some ways. Unless someone takes the time to comment (as you have) theres no real idea if the message is actually getting across as intended. So message received👍🙏

The wild Atlantic way as a route is in its title a wonderful description of itself. Wild camping spots are not that easy to find and off-road routes are not that common. In many ways it’s probably easier in a van than a roof top tent because there are tonnes of lay-bys around where you’d park a van but not really set up a tent. There are of course plenty of pay camp sites too. “Louis and the rover” did a great 4x4 roof top tent run along the northern part of the wild Atlantic way. Some beaches are legal to camp on. Network Camping episodes 12 & 14 give a lot of advice on this in terms of understanding what’s legal and so on. Personally I think spring or September is the best time of year. Avoid the crowds.

@@VISTATREKKER Thank so much for all those tips!!! I'm definitely going to write them down! I haven't seen the Ireland video from Lewi and the Rover yet, but it is on my watchlist now Again, thank you for the elaborate reply! I will get back to you when I plan the trip and when I'm there I will shout a beer :D

It is easy to take living in Ireland for granted and indeed it took me a long time to stop doing it. Now I would tell you of all the amazing places I've visited on this earth, none can compare to Donegal. This will be our first year of roof tenting and we cannot wait to get started.

Excellent. Best of luck with it. Few places compare with Ireland in its own slightly modest but ultimately very dramatic way. Enjoy the adventure. I love sleeping in the RTT with only the Mossi net closed on the downwind side. Which tent did you get?

@@VISTATREKKER went for the roofbox lite 2.0. Will probably be too much of a squeeze on the trips where the wife and two kids all come but got the living pod to accompany so I'll be able to sleep down there no doubt. Hopefully many years of adventures ahead, we will start at fanad head and work our way down as and when it suits.

Another great video 📼- and for me a great way to be a little less productive for a few minutes, stepping off my hamster wheel and to dream of summers past and to come. Got plenty of new gear for next season but sadly, still not the RTT ⛺🚙 (which I look upon with absolute envy) - long shot - but maybe I can convince Santa I've been really, really good..... Hmmmmmm well back to the dreaming 🙂

This was exactly what the video was intended to do Paul. Thank you as always for the comment. It was good to make this video because I’m literally just back from a camping trip down there again. I slept in the vehicle as it was only me and the dog. By heck did it ever demonstrate the difference in the landscape. Winter looked very beautiful in its own right too though.

Absolutely RIDICULOUS!! 😍 Really wonderful Robin - first class videography, narration and stunning showcasing of a fab trip with your siblings. Possibly the best footage I’ve ever seen showing off our wonderful country and this special peninsula!! Such a beautiful account of your time together in a ridiculously beautiful place. Yet another masterpiece to be proud of!! 🏆🎉

Ahh Miriam, warms my heart to read that thank you - mainly because it’s from someone who not only knows this place but also knows what it takes to put this kind of videos together. How you do it from a back pack really baffles me. A truck load of spare batteries and SIM cards is a different class of challenge altogether. Great to hear from you and if these images brought you 16 minutes closer to your next trip back into the wild then they were worth it.

Beautiful video, and such a stunning camping spots. One day we'll make it to Ireland. I've been wanting to visit for years since most of my lineage is from Ireland and Scotland. Thanks for sharing. Subbed!

As I’m sure you know I genuinely appreciate your feedback. Obviously I’m Irish I’ve a bit of Scottish too 😅 Just been watching your adventures too, beautifully shot and put together. Enjoyed it very much. Who knows why I find KZfaqrs travels so compelling but I think it’s because there’s a feeling that it’s done by the ordinary man, not some famous guy, and that makes it seem achievable and makes me genuinely ask myself “well why don’t I go and do something like that?”. It’s a great question for anyone to ask themselves.

Hi Robin. That was a very enjoyable 17 minutes 🙂. A really well put together account of your family reunion. Stunning scenery and location, you were indeed lucky to have grown up in such a beautiful spot. I have only been to Cork once ( a misty three days in Clonakilty), but after seeing this video, I will be making an effort to research a camping trip there Yes you guys were like big kids, I will be robbing your sisters magic tractor joke 🤫. Lots of memories created and captured. Take care👍

Hi Andrew. As always I genuinely appreciate your support. Miriam Kennedy has a great hiking and camping video right along the top of much of this peninsula which might pair well with this as you plan your trip west. Yes I’m afraid I thought that tractor joke was excellent. A proper Dad joke 🤣
