Those boys are going to be so happy being able to live with other mice once they’ve recovered. There are many misconceptions about neutering (which seems to be spread quite a bit by backyard breeders), but given the mice aren’t elderly and don’t have existing health issues that would affect their surgery the risk is extremely low! It’s never a waste of money when it improves their quality of life 😁

This video is perfect timing. There's a few male mice near me that are up for adoption. I would only be able to take one if I get him neutered then introduced to my group. Are u able to give advice on post op. I can't find much online. What is their recovery like? Do u have a rough cost of neutering?
@Emiology
@Emiology Жыл бұрын
Post neuter isn’t too bad, need to be in a smaller cage for around a week so they don’t stress their wound too much, will need pain meds for around a week and the vet should hopefully use dissolvable stitches so shouldn’t need removing 😊 It tends to cost anywhere from £50-£80

How soon after neutering can you introduce the males to other mice? Could you have a group of all males or is it best to have 1-2 males to a group of females?
@Emiology
@Emiology Жыл бұрын
Around 2 weeks after but 3 weeks just to be safe that they’re no longer fertile. It can take up to 6 weeks for their hormones to die down sometimes and for them to do well in introductions but you can have just males together. Some might still have an issue with that and need female company only
@LadyHamsterton
@LadyHamsterton Жыл бұрын
Maybe the younger mice are bigger because they got better nutrition earlier in life since they were in your care at a younger age.
@Emiology
@Emiology Жыл бұрын
Yes I think so, it’s ironic because the first few litters born outside my care were small and I think the mum culled a few out of stress so she didn’t have as many to feed, but the litter of 10 grew very well in a low stress environment with plenty of good food 😊

you're amazing emi! also - does emi (or anyone else) have an opinion/advice on whether male/female rats have cheaper vet bills/need the vets less frequently? obviously i would always provide the vet attention they needed, but im just curious to whether one sex needs the vets more than the other. i know that males need to get neutered sometimes due to hormonal aggression, but females often get reproductive tumors. thoughts? should this not be a big concern?
@Emiology
@Emiology Жыл бұрын
I think it really depends but I’ve heard of female tumour removals sometimes costing £300,£400 at times depending on the vet, neuters tend to cost around £80 roughly depending on where you go

Hi Emi, i love all your videos. This couldnt have come at a better time. Im considering rescuing males in the future as they are less desirable than females (smell) but i want to house more than 1 together so neutering is the only way (i think?). I currently have one old boy who has had health issues so hes housed in his own and i wont neuter him. Moving forward I'm just worried about the recovery 😞. Have you ever lost any males during the surgery? Ive lost two female mice duirng surgery and im just so worried about that. Id feel like ive killed thme 😢. In your opinion is ut better to house 1 lone male or neuter and introduce to other neutered males or females?
@Emiology
@Emiology Жыл бұрын
This is the first time I’ve personally had males neutered as all the others I adopted they were already neutered. There were around 20 or so other males recently connected to this rescue and I believe they only lost 1 or 2 during the surgery? It’s a risk but I’d say it’s worth it. Having had a single male mouse before and having these boys now, the ones that are interested in human attention are constantly at the front of their enclosures pining for any interaction because they can’t get it from other mice. Either neutering or housing with ASF rats that are also in shelters and no one wants to adopt them is the best option over housing alone 😊
@amyneedham5218
@amyneedham5218 Жыл бұрын
@@Emiology thank you for your response, yes my boy is constantly at the front of the cage. He's old and not in the best health so I wouldn't put him through a neuter. But thank you I will definitely think more about neutering! I will look in shelters now as I want to give a good home to those who haven't got one 😢🥺. They have such short lives to be living in shelters! 😭
