thanks for the comment. there are a number of ways to run a trap. some coaches prefer the players to set up further out, i like them deeper in the zone so you have more space to shut down the breakout before the red line. the set-up in this vid is very similar to the way the 1982 Oilers ran it in this clip: watch?v=56fM4YQPTVY I've run it this way at some pretty decent levels of play (both as a player and as a coach), and it works well. But hey... if you don't like it, don't use it :)

I like the explanation and that you also discuss one way of beating the trap. Always good to see both sides, because there always are two sides.

Very good video...I like how you give your history in Hockey honestly...being at the JR. level you were still pretty good compared to the average. Great video. Thanks .

you're right to an extent - and i realized i didn't fully explain it in this vid (i made it almost 3 years ago), i'll do a follow up video to clarify. the player who forces the play could change depending on where the breakout is initiaed from, and how quickly it happens. if there's time, F1 forces the play like you mentioned, and like you see in the clip i mentioned. however, if it's a quick, strong-side breakout from the corner, it can make more sense for the winger to force it, as shown here

Being a south of the border person, hockey has always been of little interest to me. Watching Adam Gopnik online, I became aware of The Trap. Thanks for 'splainin!

PS - i'll keep a look out for more game clips of it being executed. Surprisingly, there aren't that many out there. I guess that's because KZfaq didn't exist during the NJ Devils "trap era!"

I try this lots on NHL 17 but the problem is EA sports needs to fix it as what happens is once they get the puck pass the 3 players line up the 1 CPU defenseman back alway too aggressive and trys to go for the hit then there a breakway

F1 forces the play in that clip and F2/F3 back off. the first clip isn't a trap, just a forward caught up ice backchecking.

My issue with this video is that in a true NZT the forwards on defense wouldn’t be that low in the o zone.

this is a ridiculous explanation. where did you come up with this? not even close to how a trap occurs. please get it right before spreading this nonsense any further.
