I think his comment was bit misinformation Avalon clear balances pre like focsurite but king of clean gain smooth rnb ish never gives things edgy feel based what the transformer is giving warmth from spec, hearing and information form top peeps @@wavescentralstudios

Tube pres are almost always warmer so the 737 is always going to sound warmer. The Solid State (transformer) pres like the 1073 will have more color and drive.

I've had the opportunity to work with both preamps hands-on with a SonyC800g,TLM103,U87, and a Manley Reference. All were run through a Cl1B compressor which already has its own color and sound so I'm just speaking from observation when I say the Avalon has warmth. For my taste I wouldn't run a Manley or C800G through a 1073 because it's too harsh for my taste and ears when mixing, coming from mics that are already bright. And to be honest running the TLM103 through an Avalon (with the mics very specific proximity effect) gives it a crazy good sound! The point of having nice hardware is to limit the amount of work needed in the box when mixing vocals especially. If you haven't used any of them before, it'd be hard to make a valid opinion.@@22rapper

The Avalon has clarity that is useful & popular but the 1073 instantly is recognisable to the world standard for vocal presence & depth.. it’s simply the Standard.

I have both and depending on the type of song I’m singing is where I make my choice . Sometimes I prefer one over the other after I listen to how my voice sounds and works best. They are BOTH absolutely amazing !!!

They’re both just as good. It all depends on who’s performing AND MOST IMPORTANT the microphone you’re recording with. You could watch reviews all day all night but the microphone has to pair with your hardware. Ketchup for hot dogs, bbq for nuggets.

They both sound great. The Avalon doesn't bring enough brightness enough but the way it reacts to high end makes it so easy to boost later. The 73 sounds way more characteristics but also brings up a lot of unwanted sounds depending on the signal being fed

People like the Avalon Pre… sounds “expensive”; they mostly criticize the finicky Compressor and high price. It’s absolutely right at home next to my BAE 1073 which sounds thicker and less “modern”

the avalon can sound the same as the 1073 if you tweak the eq and compressor.. I Realy like the avalon 737. I use it with the u87ai

Same but I use a U67 for additional tube and transformer warmth. People that say they “Can’t stand” the VT737, clearly do not know how to use it properly. If it sucks so bad, why would they make a plug-in version of it? 😂

1073 is great for voice, I like the 737 for horns becasue you get more warmth and horns dont need more crispiness.

Avalon has the tube warmth and the 1073 has that creamy low end and high end depth. I like the 1073 better but both are great for different things

The transformer in the Neve adds a little more weight to the vocal. Both sound good. By the way, I like your Focal Trio 6's in the background. I love mine too.

If you’re using the same settings on both, I would pick the neve for a crisper sound to make my vocals stick out in the mix….I think I’d use the Avalon for singers for some reason. The Avalon seems like it fits that vibe.

1073 for rap and rock vocals Avalon for smooth singing vocals. Pair 1073 with 76 styled compressor for edgy rock vocals, pair 1073 or Avalon with optical styled compressor for rap or r&b or pop. I have both!

I love the texture of the vocal fry I get with the 1073. It’s so obvious and such a 1073 sound. I changed setup slightly though, upgraded the entire vocal chain

The Neve 1073 is better but me personally. I would use them together. The Avalon was nice and warm while the Neve was more bright but together I believe your vocals would sound perfect

I used both and the 1073 is boomy a little but that's what you want for big sound. Still tho, the Avalon got that Jay-Z "New York" with Alicia Keys flavor. It's more like a radio song sound. The 1073 is more albumish. So in my opinion, the more crispy the less-boring (exciting) the more albumish is a little boring to listen to but of course it's all in the mixing game anyway.

I'm learning I like capacitor based pres and mics better than tube or transformer pres. not that a capacitor based pre doesn't have a transformer for power purposes, but there definitely cleaner than tube and transformer designs I don't like the grit. With that being said I like the Avalon you just have it set bland and pushing the tube.

I used to own the Neve 1073 DPX I SOLD IT AND COULD NOT BE HAPPIER. THE DPX IS NOT THE CLASSIC NEVE YOU THINK OF NOT BY FAR.

Neve 1073 vs BAE 1073 please. I'm pretty sure BAE wins. The BAE has the original point to point soldering, the AMS Neve not.
