There is a wild berry that grows all across the eastern U.S. and it is the best tasting black pepper seasoning when dried!!! Why are we buying and importing commercial black pepper when this grows in most people's backyards and is actually good for you? Your guess is as good as mine..but this is American spicebush (lindera benzoin), and This is how i harvest and dry it to make wild, local pepper seasoning. This right here is farming the forest, true natural farming at its best. Thanks for watching our spicebush harvest.

The first time I grew was on the patio of a single bedroom apartment in pots I had to rotate to keep in the sun.

First time I grew anything was a homemade wooden box with CFL lights inside my small apt in NYC. Now we have a couple acres plot in the Hudson valley. I'm going to try growing corn in my weedy lawn 🤣🤣🤣

After tasting these things for the first time, I wondered why people hundreds of years ago would travel on sailing ships all the way to the East Indies to get spices when we had something just as good growing all over the place in our own woods.

Absolutely, and why we are still importing so much even now. It's crazy, tastes so much better too. Maybe it just takes people like us to make it more known 😉

Can you cultivate it? Will it grow in your food forest? Have never even heard of it before. Then again being in Western Canada you have LOTS of things that we cant grow here.

@@tovaritchboy You can cultivate anything if you understand what it needs and can provide for them, preferably through a closed loop.

I suspect that all annuals might be able to become perennials through breeding too, but I don't have anything to back up such a claim... Yet.

OH I know can grow ALMOST anything, but am in zone 3 with chinooks so limits the growing season and winter hardiness. Have couple micro climates that would be zone 4 and have delicate fruits and berries planted there.

I sure hope so. The history of the spice trade in south east Asia and India is tragic. If I can help show people they have everything right out there back doors, or even produce something themselves, my job is complete 😉 thank for stopping by

How long can this be stored for? I've seen people leave it in the fridge after drying but is that even necessary? Can't find a definite answer on that

yeah, your right, nobody has ever put pepper into a pepper grinder before, or even put something in a ziplock bag when your not using it. i should really talk to people like they are stupid like your self or as if im talking to a child. its not good enough that i showed everyone how to identify it, when to harvest and how to process them after they are harvested, i really should consider all the people like your self that do not know how to figure things out or just step back and think before i make myself sound like a complete idiot. oh yeah i cant forget, also be more passive aggressive and condescending when i try to ask questions about something that is common sense. lmfao
