You made a really good point about the "OEM" parts vs. original manufacturers. You should've pointed out that a lot of batteries are infact literally the same as others at almost every place they sell one. I discovered years ago East Penn Manufacturing aka Penn-Deka makes batteries for most national retailers. Once you figure out the numbers you'll find them anywhere you want to buy one with a different brand label. I discovered there was a manufacturing plant near by and I could buy them straight out of the front office for nearly half the price of a retailer.

As the owner of an '87 BMW, I have to agree. A lot of aftermarket parts for it are actually better than the originals. I installed aftermarket ball joints and control arms that are far better and cheaper than OEM, for example. And in some cases OEM parts are no longer manufactured. I agree with buying OEM in general, but on my 32-year-old German car, there are a lot of exceptions.

I have a friend working for a tool and jig manufacturer in China. She said China makes parts for most car manufacturers in the world. Some GM models has the whole engine make in China. I bought wheel bearings, washer pumps and controller for my Lexus, even turbo chargers for my Mazda with no problem. Chinese products are not the same as even 10 years ago. They just landed a Rover on the far side of the moon last week. They can do things properly if they want to provided the price is right. It seems China bashing is a patriotic thing to do these days. I won’t argue with my wallet if I can pay $19 for a Controller on eBay instead of $145 at the dealer.

Right. You can go to Lowes and buy some aluminum pipe clamps and bolts, but they will corrode and shear off from road vibration and weather. There is a reason why pipe clamps and bolts for cars are at an auto store and cost more, they are properly conditioned and treated for auto use. It's stupid how stupid people get trying to save money when they get to the point where they don't even know what they are talking about anymore. It's like saying bicycle brake cables and car brake cables are the same thing and get bicycle cables for cheaper.
@desertbrewcrew1974
@desertbrewcrew1974 5 жыл бұрын
MrWolfSnack I will go one step further. Dont go to an parts store to get headbolts or push pins for fenderskirts. Those are OEM parts. Most people who watch this channel are smart enough to know the difference between grades of hardware. Theres definately a time and place for OEM hardware ONLY. But replacing a couple of bolts on a no stress area like an oil pan or even a waterpump since its mostly silicone and o-ring anyway isnt going to harm anything. Anyone stupid enough to mess with their brake system by deliberately sabotaging it by going cheap deserves to crash. Ive never had problems and neither has anyone of my hundreds of customers after 31 years have by me using this practice. Perhaps commenting on politcal channels would be more appropriate for your liking since you assume people are less inteligent than you.

The other exception is that eBay is a great resource for used parts. Many major junk yards have eBay store fronts. I recently got a used starter for a 99 Mercedes ML430. The vehicle had 186,000 miles so paying $750 for a starter was out of the question. I found an excellent starter with only 50,000 miles for $40 on eBay. Installed it and it worked perfectly! Amazing.

yep. that is what is soooo great about ebay (if pay pal doesn't screw you that is) that you can see the record of all their transactions to an extent and what people said about the part you are buying. He's right if there is no feedback at least 20 to 50 i would say, get it somewhere else. many parts are too new to have that but if you can find what your looking for with good feedback on the part and what people said about it...you can search all that, then you should be in good shape buying it !!! Also, I never mess with sellers on ebay unless they have a 99% or above positive rating from all their transactions. If you are going to do a lot of purchases or sales there of course it would be good to see how people have been ripped off by paypal before that happens to you so you are not unpleasantly surprised.

Yep, I purchased two identical high quality tie rods from Amazon but they only had one in stock so the second one came from another vendor (auto parts stores) - they both came in the correct box but one was the correct machined part and the other was a compressed low quality pot metal part. Certainly Amazon replaced the inferior part, but had I not realized it I would installed the cheapo version while paying for the premium one. I've even had parts that you could see someone ground a cheap part name off and stamped it with another, but you had to look at it just right in the light to see it. The only reason Ebay is worse than Amazon besides the shipping is when you do have a problem it takes more work to get it resolved.
