Funny story. Watching a Scotty video a few weeks or so ago and the question of a rather new car came up saying the dealership wanted to change the brake fluid already. I laughed at the gall of the dealership trying to get money for an unneeded service. Now here's my story. This Saturday, my GF brings her 2020 Civic into the dealership for an oil change. They do it for free as part of the agreement to buy. I followed her in my car and in the time it took me to park outside and walk into the service area, they were already trying to charge her to replace the brake fluid because it was dirty she rattled off some B code. The car has 11000 miles on it. $110.00 they were trying to charge. I walked in and my GF told me what they were trying to do. I looked at the now nervous service lady and said "Really?" She started again how the car was showing that code. I retorted with that it was the pre-programmed service required light and for her to show me this code. She didn't even try but still insisted that the brake fluid was dirty and needed to be cleaned. So we popped the hood, I got my flashlight out that I EDC, popped the top of the reservoir and shined light on the cleanest brake fluid there is in a car. At this time I asked her if she wanted to try another one or just do the oil change like we asked in the first place. She backpedaled quick and didn't even try to upsell us wiper blades. I'm a nice guy, but it pisses me off too when dealerships try to prey on others. Hall Honda of Elizabeth City, NC...bite me.

My Grandmother Ordered a Special Non Hybrid Ford Escape in 2009. I spoke with the dealership, he told me when the batteries go dead? So does your car! It will not work because the electric part of the engine is connected to the gas engine, if that makes sense Which means it will basically lock up your Gas Engine preventing it from driving. The batteries are only warrantied for a few years also. That's why we stayed away from Hybrids!

ScottyKilmer - Your wisdom over the decades has fully matured and is now right on target! I recall back in 1971, watching your 1st video review on the brand new imported 1972 Toyota 4x4 FJ via 8mm home video tapes. Scotty claimed the 72' FJ was a cheap tin can and would never compete with the reliability & performance of the NEW Jeep CJ Renegade and definitely not against the FORD BRONCO! Scotty predicted cheap Toyota's would never survive the American Auto Market past 1975! Boy, was he wrong! I still see those old FJ' running around! Any JEEP CJ's? Nope! But, my grandpa (WW2 vet) agreed with Scotty, the young mechanic in 71'! He didn't want those foreign Japanese cars nowhere near the land of 'MERICA', land of the free & brave! Well, 50 years later, that's all I own! My family owns nothing but Toyotar's. We currently drive a 2005 Avalon and a 2007 FJ Cruiser. We've owned a Camry, Tacoma & Tundra. Most reliable vehicles ever! RIP - Chevy, Ford, and Dodge! POS's! Also, don't miss his video from the seventies, regarding the everlasting 8-Track tape player. You can't always be right about everything! But Scotty has come a long way since then!

Oil isn't the only issue, it's better to wait 10 to 180 seconds for the engine to go from open-loop combustion to closed-loop combustion. During open-loop the fuel/air ratio may be far from ideal depending on fuel quality, age of engine, etc., often very rich and trying to drive on rich combustion can lead to oil contamination. The engine will run best when in closed-loop, meaning no stalling, hesitation, etc.

Hey Scotty, I’m a long time Aussie fan who drives a 2006 Mazda 3 SP23, with a 2.3 litre engine and five speed manual transmission. I’m only the second owner and the one before me was a really anal mechanic, so it was very well looked after. I have kept up with the services religiously and the car has now has 378 thousand kilometres (nearly 235k miles) on the odometer) it runs just as well as it ever has since I bought it and the only repairs I have had to make are a new clutch and new front suspension struts. I reckong Mazdas make damn good cars and I have no desire to ever own anything European, because they cost WAY too much to fix and maintain. Love your channel mate!

Scotty I have a neighbor, young couple with two kids and a dog. They bought a 2018 Silverado that had 40 plus thousand miles on it. Nice looking truck and it’s for the wife and mom to have something dependable and it wasn’t cheap but there is something wrong with the transmission and they keep taking it back and they say there is nothing wrong with it. They only have till October for the warranty, that’s 3 months from now. Her husband is not a mechanic by trade but knows enough to work on his own truck and he is pretty handy at most things. When the truck is going up hill the truck acts crazy like it’s going in and out of gear making noise and not acting right. How do you get a Chevy dealership to honor their warranty. October is going to come and go soon. They want to trade it in but now they’re saying it’s not worth near what they paid. They only had the truck for about a year maybe a little longer. Thanks my friend. Been a fan of you for ever. My wife who passed away dec. of 21 is the one that told me about your channel. She bought her 2013 Lexus because of you. And I have to say I’m driving it now and was going to sell it but I decided to keep it. Really is a good car. Thanks again. Peace from pennsyltucky. ✌️👍🇺🇸

It's not about the pump it's about all the bits after the pump, get the right weight and spec for the application. And if you're printing money in a condo. Good, stay there.

Good advice, don't go from Toyota to BMW, unless you've got coin to spend endlessly. Always put the recommended oil weight in your vehicle, unless you have an old GM 307 or the like, if you have overhead cams that will ruin things faster than anything.

My 2019 Skoda Scala (1.6tdi, manual) was an incredible car. Mileage was stellar (about 750 actual miles per fillup if driven conservatively) and it would still go 140mph, although it took awhile to get there. Tdi was a dream to drive with a manual, so easy to get moving from a start with that torque. The US really gets screwed on what we get for cars. Bought it two years old for $16000 (equivalent), had front and rear parking sensors, electric defrosting windshield, folding side mirrors, heated seats and steering wheel, good sized touch screen which was great for Android auto, multiple usb-c ports, remote keyless/touch entry, keyless ignition, adjustable depth trunk floor, backup camera, and some funky cool stuff like a washer fluid filler with integrated funnel, umbrella hidden in drivers door, and a windshield scraper in the gas door. My mechanic in Germany said the tdis are great, stay away from the gas engines. Like the US gets that option. Buddies gas VW has already had issues due to DI. Miss that car a lot. It was an amazing vehicle. Cant touch any comparably equipped vehicle in the US for anything close to that price, even if ignoring the diesel advantage.

If he doesn't see your question, my experience tells me it will result in increased exhaust smoke which could lead to injectors becoming dirty (hard starting). I've noticed that certain fuel oils cause black smoke more than other types. I'm guessing that will result in carbon deposits.

In Canada they also screw you over on THE WARRANTY. How you wonder? They only Warranty the car for 100,000 Kilometers. The same car in the US has a 100,000 Mile Warranty. This is a difference of almost 38,000 miles. When my car developed a wiring issue in the trunk because of a design flaw that pinched the wiring every time it was opened, they told me my trunk had too many Kilometers on it.

Scotty, thanks for all your effort in producing honest, informative, easy to understand and useful videos. I have learned a lot & your videos are most appreciated.🤗 Help me out here your making me real nervous about buying an Odyssey. Needed a van so I did my research & it was either Toyota or Honda. At the start of the pandemic I found a private seller close by with '09 Odyssey 156k $4700. Now its making some strange noises, only gets 10mpg & it hard to start sometimes. I'm at a loss İ don't trust the mechanics or dealer. How do you vet mechanics? Trany fluid needs help how do I get a mechanic to replace just a quart or 2 ?? Anyway you state in this video & others that Honda engines & tranys are problematic but I have also seen you praise them. Can you please clarify this? I'm quite concerned as I must make this one last as long as possible.

@@RosalineIvy Thanks for info. Found 2 videos duplicating the constant noise ( I can't find words to describe it buts it's distinct). Noise constant except when in neutral or park. Go figure. Anyhow a Scotty video I stumbled across has exact noise & claims it is exclusive to a/c compressor failing, well I don't use a/c so... I did find another video stating that noise is one of only 3 things. It's gotta be the water pump ... Then we have the 2 bad oil changes plus the worsening leaks, a lot of exterior engine sludge with white sparkles (only detectable in photographs ) and a pretty fluorescent green tint So begins the chain of events resulting in my being taken advantage of by local mechanic to the tune of $5660 and on/off carless for over 2 mos. Car taken back to shop 5 times but I've been left with a host of new questions, concerns/issues, noises and other repairs/maintenance still to be done. In search of a competent, trustworthy, honest mechanic that wil l hear what I have to say and advise. Am I hallucinating thinking I'll ever find such a thing?? My apologies for being so long-winded. After literally more than 100 hrs of you tube vids, reading articles, reviews, comments, recalls etc... in the past 2.5 months & learning about the interference engine ( Outlaw them or mandate chains no vvv or aftermarket, the mind-boggling amount of solenoid, valves, switches, relays.....Yada Yada yada I have sworn off any vehicles newer than 1998 . Just give me my old 4 on the floor & fifth under the seat and I'm a happy camper😊.

Did Scotty ever discuss what engine oil to not buy?
@robertkarp2070
@robertkarp2070 Жыл бұрын
All I got was to not put in engine oil that the engine wasn't designed for. Therefore, if your owners manual states use 5-30w oil, don't think you're doing the engine favors by putting in 50w oil. I was actually told once they use 50w oil in all his vehicles because the engine leaks less with it. Scotty is saying don't do that because the oil is not lubricating the engine quickly enough when you start it up and will experience more wear on the engine from initial start up.

A thicker oil will leave a thicker MOFT between parts. Also, the oil pathways in an engine fill via positive displacement of the oil pump, meaning oil flows just as fast regardless of viscosity. Thinner oil is for CAFE goals, not engine protection.
