Collecting spinach seeds is easy but the process from start to finish can take months. Gardener Scott shows how to collect spinach seeds by identifying their unique growth, harvesting when dry, and saving the seeds for storage. (Video #255)

Spinach can be hard to keep True-to-Type! According to "The Seed Garden", a great book from seed savers exchange, there are a few factors to look out for: Spinach is dioecious meaning each plant is either male or female, so you'll have to leave at least a handful to bolt. The other big one is the pollen is INCREDIBLY fine, you can't use mesh to protect from cross pollination. They recommend spacing out different varieties of spinach up to 1 mile apart. So if you have neighbors growing spinach for seed, try to coordinate to use the same varieties to keep your seeds true to type! Would love to know some of your tricks on how you do it!

A big factor in avoiding cross pollination is to only allow one open pollinated variety to flower at a time. I'm lucky that my neighbors are not gardening to collect seed.

I always used to recite along with your opening mantra "a master gardener that discusses everything gardening so that you don't have to", and somewhere along the way I kept mutating it. If you need a sterile work space in a pinch, you can open a phone book to a new page and it's about the cleanest surface available to work at while setting things up, if you only need to do a little and are in a hurry. Even a perfectly clean looking counter collects a good sample of dust in just a day.

I have 3 #10 cans full of spinach seed heads. I know I will never use them all especially when they are easy to self seed by falling on the ground. Saving Radish seeds is easier if you ask me. In these past days I went outside in the morning and saw frost on the outer edges of the Radish seedlings I planted a week before. I planted some of those from saved seed to. A Big Seed company decided not to sell them this year, so I'm glad I saved some. It isn't spring yet in my opinion. Even though the last frost is about May 1. It makes no sense to plant nightshades until the end of May to be safe if you don't have backup plants. That is where having a small and manageable greenhouse comes in handy. That is unless a wind storm doesn't damage it. This virus situation has really made some seed choices even smaller. Not even the Bonnie offerings are as diverse.

I planted some silver beet and spinach in my front flower garden and forgot about them over winter. Went out to weed last week and found heaps of new plants growing. They were sheltered from the frosts under the huge geranium bush. I transplanted them into my little summer vege garden by the back door, where I can quickly grab things for dinner. I even found some new plants in the grass near the edge of the geranium bush.

Boy is this a great channel for new people. How does one know if a seed packet at the store will grow a plant that its seeds can be used next season? (I think I understand that if the pack says Heirloom, then those seeds will grow more useful seeds. But I'd the pack doesn't say heirloom do you assume it's a once and done seed?)
@GardenerScott

A pack should say hybrid if it is a hybrid. If it doesn't say hybrid, you can assume it is open pollinated, like an heirloom.

Just bought a greenhouse and a first timer. Spinach is one of my targeted plants for the greenhouse. I would like to have my own seeds from it as well. From my research (so far) I can harvest the spinach several times cutting it and letting it grow back. If I want seeds do I just let it grow from there? Will it still Bolt? I'm sure I will have a billion questions I hope I'm not too big a pain.
@GardenerScott
@GardenerScott Жыл бұрын
Yes, you can harvest spinach over and over through the cool season. Typically, once the high heat of summer hits it will begin to bolt and you just let it grow, flower, and seed.
@thedvl69

@@GardenerScott How many times do you think it can be harvested? I read 3-4 times. Are there plants I can grow that I can just keep harvesting over the year if the greenhouse is kept in ideal conditions? A friend has a pepper plant that i know he has had a few years

@ttb1513 3 жыл бұрын
@@nancyjohnson7153 I remember the first time I planted cilantro seed. The package was labeled “fast bolting”. I thought fast must be a good thing. If you wanted coriander, the seed, yes. But if you wanted cilantro leaves which are best tasting before bolting, not so much. The first stretch of hot dry weather put the plants into preservation mode, focusing on producing seed. Basil is similar. Once it goes to seed, the leaves don’t taste the same. I’ve succeeded in delaying that with basil by harvesting or pruning any stem before it matures to go to seed. This also promotes new branches and a very bushy plant, producing vastly more leaves than with no pruning. I have not tried the same with cilantro. Yet. I only decided to plant so it matures in cooler weather. Experiment with spinach.
