A little soak overnight in bicarb of soda to soften the husks then a brief rubbing alcohol rinse to kill root viruses will yield great results. Be sure to allow the blossom pods to produce seeds. It takes a year or two from seed to produce healthy bulbs. Grow stiff neck garlic. Its the best.

Must be nice to have land to plant literally anything. My apartment doesn't even allow flower pots.
@dotcassilles148811 ай бұрын
You might be able to have access to a garden plot in a community garden. Find a plant nursery or garden centre nearby and ask if they know of any groups that offer free/ low cost access. If there is anywhere around you that host "open garden" days then they might know. Hope this encourages you to grow something. Start small with herbs or one or two types of vegetables you use all the time. I grow chives and parsley in a tiny pot on my kitchen sink. I'd be asking your landlord or HOA exactly what they mean by no flower pots. Does that include having indoor pots? Most apartments don't like people having pots on outside areas like balconies because of the risk of water leaking down onto the balcony/balconies below but they may allow you to have a pot inside in the "wet" areas of your house like your kitchen or bathroom. There is a 4th way to start growing onions. Chop the bottom 3/4-1" off of the onion before using it, then place over a glass or cup filled with water that touches the root area. @brachashighhopeshomestead22611 ай бұрын
JCJoef that's a challenge if it's not facing south if you live above the equator. Try for a community garden or ask a neighbor, who might have land or small yard either back or front or both, if you can share a space in exchange for crop care.
@da1stamericus11 ай бұрын
@jaceejoef I grow mine on my balcony. Depending on how much sun you get, or if you are on the roof, try growing spring onions, and you always win. I just harvested my onions. The baby ones I chopped up. I froze the small bulbs, and dried the leaves. The big ones are drying. I also have green onions growing. Great addition to any meal. I am also growing my own thyme, oregano, cilantro, dill, celery (three varieties), sage (three varieties), rosemary, mint (two varieties) and cola herb. Besides this we grow strawberries, yellow and red raspberries, blackberries, plums, currants, tomatoes, peppers and chillies, kale, sweet and savory potatoes, broccoli, cucumbers, beets, chard and squash. 😅 I have done this by growing vertically. I also use the top of the railing to grow lettuces, flowers and some bok choy and mustards. Although I may have forgotten a few things. I see my balcony as a living pantry. I'm in the Netherlands where all spaces is at a premium when in an apartment. Best thing about this is seeing all the experiments.

Plant indeterminate varieties so the gift keeps on giving during the spring/fall/summer. I like how they braid and hang onions. Seems it would be a pretty space saver.

Fun fact: If you don't chop off the stem, the onions stay fresh longer (i.e. don't get rotten) if storing in non-cold conditions.

I have a patch in my yard where we only plant onions as we get them here in Bermuda in bunches of 50 or 100. Super easy and so rewarding, don't forget to plant some of the purple ones as well!

one thing to know, that if growing from seed you will not get big onions first season. You will get bulbs which then need planted again next season to turn into big onions

you can also keep the stems with the leaves attached to the bulb after harvesting in summer, and braid those leaves together in a onion rope. Same with garlic. You hang that out to dry in a cool, dry, dark place, and you have yourself an excellent way of storing onion and some lovely kitchen/ pantry decorations.

Onion starts are the very best ones if you don't have room indoors to start them. Onion sets are second year so the bulbs really won't get very big before they start bolting. Seeds are the least expensive. The best onions I ever grew was from starts (seedlings). Dixondale Farms is a great place to order from. The website is very informative and will tell you what types of onions that grow best in your area. That's where I got my starts last spring. Great place!
