Umm. As a motorcyclist here, do not dump your bike and attempt to ride it like a surf board. Attempt to progressively brake as much as possible and if you cannot stop, attempt to find an escape path. If there is no escape path and you cannot stop, find the path of least damage, stand up to avoid groin injury and move your thumbs around the bars to avoid breaking them when you get thrown from the bike.

Never lay it down! When you lay it down, you’re out of control. When you’re upright, you can continue braking and reduce your speed. I’ve had close calls where I thought for sure there would be an impact and I was just braking to reduce the impact. Ten miles per hour less can save your life. But miraculously, they ended up being close calls instead of accidents. Never give up, your bike can do more than you think it can. Been riding 34 years.

@@PRL2204 While you have the rubber on the road you can (are) braking, and you can (should be) steering. Once the rubber loses contact you can neither steer, nor brake. The rubber has a higher amount of friction than metal and plastic, so you don't slow down as well that way. He's talking about being too close to whatever is going on in the motorcycle's path to get away from it. A motorcycle takes at least as long as a car to stop and possibly twice as long. So if your choice is out of control braking, doing a superman, or laying it down in hopes of using the bike to take the brunt of an impact the third option is best.

I’ve never understood the idea of “dumping” or “laying down” your motorcycle as a means of avoiding a collision. Rubber has far better traction on pavement then steel, and can slow you down much more quickly, as well as allowing you to maintain some steering control. Once a wreck is happening, then it makes more sense to get away from the motorcycle. Is that what you meant by “dump your bike”?

obviously you can't just take into consideration the material, the shape and other factors have to be taken into consideration too. Laying the motorcycle allows more surface to make contact with the floor there for more traction, plus the uneven surface of the motorcycle will afford you more traction than the treads of your wheels.

@lostHandle
@lostHandle 2 жыл бұрын
@@Not_alex_jones brake pads only slow down the wheels, the wheel's friction with the road is what really slow downs then eventually stops the vehicle. Uhhh, DubiousDucky is right. The MSF, and every other motorcycle authority that I know, says do not dump the bike, but continue braking. It is amazing how fast most motorcycles will stop. Emergency stops should be practiced every time you get on a bike. You brake, then swerve.
@bobbabai

@bobbabai
@bobbabai 2 жыл бұрын
Okay, let's clarify. Bikes stop quickly. They stop quickest when the bike is standing up straight on a good surface. Brakes and aggressive steering can be used at the same time and generally should be used at the same time when you're trying to avoid hitting something. The more the bike is leaned over, the less brake force is required to make the tire skid. The harder the handlebars are yanked left or right, the less brake force is required to make the tire skid.
@jstpsgthru
@jstpsgthru 2 жыл бұрын
@@bobbabai You doubled down on your incorrect position. You say, "Brakes and aggressive steering can be used at the same time and generally should be used at the same time when you're trying to avoid hitting something." Uh, no. GENERALLY, you should stop in a straight line for as long as absolutely possible, then swerve. In EXTREME CIRCUMSTANCES, continuing to brake while swerving is necessary, but should only be applied when unavoidable.

This "dump the bike" or "lay the bike down" and slide myth is dangerous. I was a motor insurance claims investigator for many years and had it parroted at me many times by customers after they had had accidents. A bike has tyres/tires designed to grip the road, and brakes designed to slow it down under control. While it is rolling, you can brake, accelerate, and steer, to control the speed and direction. Once the bike is on its side, all you have is momentum, and the stopping power of shiny metal sliding on the road is considerably less than the stopping power of purpose-designed tyres and brakes. It is dangerous advice, even when repeated as a joke.

Expect every car at every intersection to cut you off so you're ready to react when it happens. Most bike wrecks are avoidable, meaning if you're paying attention like you're supposed to you should be able to avoid most accidents. The exception being vehicles approaching from your rear. Offset at stop lights so if you are struck you're not smashed between two vehicles. Learn how to threshold brake and practice it. Threshold braking decreases your stopping distance by at least 60% compared to locking your brakes and riding a skid to a stop.

Based on some statistics i was told. 95% of motorcyclecrashes were realistically avoidable in one way or another. Maintain brakes, and tyres Make sure you have a headlight Progressive braking Swerving. Only if none of those can possibly work do you attempt to jump off of the bike. If you crash into something at speed while still on a bike, you will be ejected upwards while spinning, the centrifugal/or is it centripetal (cant remember) will extend your limbs (think of patrick from spongebob). If you jump off you can probably have some influence over the direction/ height / limbposition to protect your head and torso. That being said you might not have the time to purposfully jump off. And it is the LAST RESORT. Braking and swerving will ussually avoid an accident or at least reduce the impact force in most cases. This is based on the assumption you are wearing some protective clothing
