Napoleon chose the eagle to be a symbol of the French Army. Carried atop a staff into battles, this eagle represented pride and determination, and caused disgrace if left on the battlefield.

The first French Eagle of the Peninsular War captured by the British was by the 87th Royal Irish Fusiliers At the Battle of Barrosa, fought in Spain in 1811 to quote Sergeant Patrick Masterson "Bejabers boys! I have got the cuckoo!"

@@acewatt2737 That is false. The legion was disbanded yes (until the standard could be recovered) but the legionaries weren't disbanded, they were just embedded in other legions. You have to understand a legionary is an immense investment of state resources and he can't be dismissed just like that, the skill and combat experience are just too valuable to let go.

This guy is old school nuts. "Our" regiment, and the salute at the end. Ugh. You're a RE-ENACTOR. Remember when "I think I am something and therefore I am that thing, who cares about reality" was just the occasional oddball like this guy? Now it runs our Universities, Big Tech and Government. Yay.

When you reenact, you literally become a member of the regiment you are portraying. Everything has to be authentic or a true period reproduction-right down to how you speak. It becomes part of you.

@@nicklang6925 bro what you call recent history is 1600 years ago. What happened previously to 1600 years ago is very ancient. France as we know it (not as the recent history but in general) is born from the Roman Empire and the Gaul together. Roman Empire is not equal to Italy at all.

Not to be a d!ck but can "I'm pretty educated on military history" and "This is the first I ever heard about..." BOTH be true? I don't know much about history, let alone military history - and even I knew that. Maybe I'm unusual in that I have seen any of the hundreds of shows and movies and paintings that show Napoleon's troops carrying Eagle Standards around. Go figure.
