Stam Fine Reviews Sean Connery's Official/Not Official comeback as James Bond 007, the 1983 film, Never Say Never Again, released a few months after the Official Official James Bond film starring Roger Moore, Octopussy. It's almost a decent comedy, but is it a decent James Bond film?
Never Say Never Again also stars Kim Basinger as Domino, Klaus Maria Brandauer as Largo, bernie Casey as Felix Leiter and Barbara Carrera as Fatima Blush. Oh, and it's basically a remake of the 1965 Bond film Thunderball.

The cast was excellent there is some great dialogue but the film is flaccid. Not only does the film not generate any real thrills or tension, it's also tonally inconsistent. The writers couldn't decide if Never Say Never Again should be a farce or a thriller.

I loved this movie. Watch it over and over. It’s a throwback to a past I didn’t know I had. It was the James Bond movie they tried to quiet which all a sudden flooded cable television in the 90’s . It had its ups and downs but overall I felt the feel of this movie was a throwback and a modernization at the same time. This movie literally feels like it belongs in its own time period. Is it 80’s? Is it 70’s ? This movie has a unique undertone and of course even an aging Sean Connery to me was miles ahead of later incarnations of the character. He set the tone for the character. A suave agent who didn’t take things too seriously but never seemed campy. He could approach a scene jokingly almost but still command the moment. He could deliver a one liner so smoothly that even though it was an obvious come on, the women he spoke these things to couldn’t help but say, “why not?” The color pallet and score almost had a dreamlike sense about it. I think certain movies you need to be in the right mindset to watch.

I don't agree about the assessment regarding Largo. Unlike so many other Bond villains who fit the same old cloak and dagger mold, Maximilian Largo actually showed some vulnerability and even a pathetic nature. He is one of most fascinating Bond antagonists in the series.

My dad was born in 1951. I was born in 1980. My dad loved this movie. He was so happy to have HIS James Bond back. He didn't get to see it in the theater. He had to wait until it was aired on network television. I vaguely remember it when it aired. I do remember watching 007 on the ABC Sunday night movie a few times in the 80's with him. I can remember watching Octopussy twice, Live And Let Die, Goldfinger, and Diamonds Are Forever. I got into James Bond films in the year 1990 when ABC played The Living Daylights on Easter Sunday. The summer of 1990 was spent renting 007 films. I was 10 and these movies were great. I finally rented Never Say Never Again. I didn't like it. My dad still loved it because as I said earlier, this was HIS 007. But since I wasn't alive in the 60's, I didn't have the nostalgia of Sean Connery. I loved Sean Connery, but I was equally happy with Roger Moore, or even Timothy Dalton. So to see Sean Connery return in a movie that was now 7 years old, it just didn't hold water to me. I could tell it was different and made by a different company and stuff, but the overall story bored me. I was only 3 when it was released and it hadn't aged well by year 1990...or at least it didn't age well to someone that wasn't alive in the 60's and has zero nostalgia to see Connery again. I think this movie served it's purpose for the year 1983. The 60's kids got their hero back. Other than that, this movie isn't worth watching.

NSNA gets a lot of hate from some Bond fans, but it did lead to a resurgence of Connery’s career, and I’d argue that, in Claus Maria Brandauer’s Maximillian Largo, it has the best Bond villain since Goldfinger, and a great villainess in Barbara Carrera’s Fatima Blush. And Max Von Sydow makes the best Blofeld.
@ricardocantoral7672
@ricardocantoral7672 2 жыл бұрын
I second your opinions regarding Largo and Blush. Those two were more impressive than a good deal of the EON Bond villains that appeared after Goldfinger. As for Von Sydow, I thought he was disappointing. He looked about as threatening as a librarian and because much of his performance was left on the cutting room floor, his role in Never Say Never Again was pretty much of no real consequence.

As dated as it is, I thoroughly enjoy this film, but I was probably the right age for it when it first came out so I simply don't see the terrible movie that this guy does. The only thing I would say is, in hindsight, the tone and overall vibe of the movie feels more like something that came out of the late 70s rather than the 80s, but that's more of an observation than a critique. The cast are all great in their roles, the set pieces and action are entertaining, Kershner films it all nicely, and it even had some good vfx for its time with the cruise missiles and holographic video game sequences. I don't really get whats not to like. All that said, I probably do still prefer Thunderball over its remake though.

I think that is the score - lots of jazz sounds and the title track is very RandB which was very big in the 1970s. For Your Eyes ONly was also a very 70s score (eg lots of disco). I loved the scores of both. Much better than Octopussy and Moonraker, AVTAK was very 80s, and from this point on of much lower musical quality in my view.

NSNA(1983) is actually a pretty good Bond movie! Mainly thanks to mr. Connery of course, who was still sooooooo charming at the age of 53! Some good supporting actors too(Barbara Carrera!, Rowan Atkinson...). And by the way, NSNA(1983) is not unofficial Bond film! It's just not "EON productions" Bond film! McClory had every rights to make this film! I don't understand why Broccoli even hated McClory so much? Was he afraid that "Octopussy" would fail completely?
@bobgoran
@bobgoran 2 жыл бұрын
Kevin McClory is not a sane person to begin with, but that's another story. When it comes to Bond, he was just greedy. He got so much money from co-producing Thunderball but he wasn't happy and wanted more. McClory had a chance to get the film rights but he rejected them, and he probably couldn't get over it. It is nothing strange that EON productions are protecting their property.

He was too old for this role at this point. Even though I get why he did it, it was awful. After Goldfinger his bond movies went downfall in general, but to be fair: Connery always made clear that he got tired of this role after the second or third movie (which is understandable), and always wanted to move on. After this movie, he finally managed to do it. His career went so well that he even won a oscar at some point.

Well I can't agree with STAM here. I felt in compared favorably to Thunderball. First I think Barndauer was fhe first interesting villain in the Bond movies. I always remember him saying good mourning to his crew. He was really for me a three dimensional villain. Only Robert Davi really succeded well in that. Also loved Barbara Carrera in the film, compared to those in the film THUNDERBALL. ONLY CLAUDIO AUNGER IN THUNDERBALL was better in the role. Worst Bond film of the 80's, how about best. For me I gave up on Roger Moore as James Bond in FOR YOUR EYES ONLY, which when I saw in the Theater, I was totallly bored by. Octopussy had two interesting villains in the twins, who were quite scary I thought when I saw it on video. Louis Jordan was also somewhat fun.

The opening sequence with the music was on par with the latest Bond, and yes, that means it was GREAT for its time! I enjoy your reviews, but you missed the mark bigtime with this one I think. This was the last really good James Bond Film until No Time to Die. It also brought back the classic Bond humour which we had not seen since Diamonds Are Forever. "It's against Civil Service policy to give out endorsements" must be the best line in any James Bond Film. But after this we never got the humour back. They don't make them like this anymore! Barbara Carerra was sensational. By far the most charismatic Bond girl. In many ways she stole the film, even giving Connery a run for his money. The score by the sensational Michel Legrand was uneven. When it was good it was amazing, but it did not always work with the images - and I think that was down to the director. But I would still rank the score at. 2 though after For Your Eyes Only. The problems were with the editing and directing. People had high expectations of Kirschner, but he did not always deliver.

A very good review and I must say I can't disagree with your overall conclusion. It's a real shame, as on paper, it should've worked, especially with all the talent involved. But it doesn't. The timing of the release of the movie would've also hurt its box office takings. Yes, it was released in the US on October 7th, but the UK had to wait another 2 months before it was finally released there. Whereas Octopussy was released worldwide in early June that same year. Though, some will disagree on whether Connery played Bond one more time after NSNA. The movie "The Rock" had Connery playing a Bond-like protagonist John Mason, whose timeline coincides exactly with that of his 60's and "Diamonds Are Forever" character, right down to being incarcerated in 1962 and escaping in 1963 from Alcatraz. Consider at the beginning of "From Russia With Love," Sylvia Trench complains that Bond disappeared for 6 months after going to Jamaica. As for 1971, the ship that Bond is on at the movie's finale is the HMSS Canberra docked in San Francisco, not long before John Mason was recaptured in 1972, and at the same point that he fathers his estranged daughter. There's a ton of other coincidenes that I won't go into as they're covered elswhere, but you get the point.

Actually I believe that Octopussy and A View To A Kill were the worse Bond movies of the 80s although Never Say Never was a close runner up. I know this because of the three Never was the only one I didn’t walk out on. Octopussy was just boring and A View… I left when Bond started acting like Harold Lloyd on a fire truck ladder. I agree Never either should of had a better script or should never have been filmed but it was nice to see Connery as James Bond one last time. Thanks for the video.

I thought Octopussy is a rare case of a film getting good late in it's running time. The first half, the stuff in India, is a waste of time. Just dumb gags, a tedious set up of the villains and side characters of which there are far too many. The titular character herself isn't anything special. When the film finally switches the location to Germany, that's when it actually gets good and the race to stop the bomb is one of the best moments in the entire franchise.

As a small kid the first Bond I saw was Goldfinger on TV but I was too little to understand his character, only that I couldn't regard well anyone who said you have to wear earmuffs to listen to the Beatles. Entering and traversing my teens it was all Roger Moore, who is therefore the "James Bond" I grew up with. But gaining some adult distance from the whole question, despite the humorous charm (and personal sentimental standpoint for me personally) of Moore, Connery really is by far the superior Bond, enough to more than make up for the lack of the familiar Q, M, Moneypenny, Monty Norman theme and trademark gun barrel intro. Kim Bassinger is one of the five hottest Bond chicks throughout the entire franchise, and I consider the villains (and Smallfaucet) all truly hilarious. All in all, I consider this something of an upgrade from the original Thunderball.

Since July 2021 I don't receive any notifications of your very humorous reviews. I wonder if its happening to other Subscribers.

“NEVER SAY NEVER AGAIN” was far superior to that snooze-fest titled “Thunderball,” which even its director, Terence Young, was not terribly proud of! As Sean Connery had wanted, “NSNA” had more emphasis on character and plot, rather than gadgets, sci-fi sets, and imbecilic Moore-ish puns. It featured a superb cast, especially Klaus Maria Brandauer as Largo. The new interpretations of M and Q were entertaining. The screenplay was witty, imaginative, tighter, and better paced; the action well-staged and serving the story properly. The cinematography and set designs were elegant. No rear-screen, postcard shots of the Bahamas; no dragged-out hijacking or underwater battles; no dubbed actors, no SPECTRE rings, no eyepatches. And, Thank Heaven . . . no “Octopussy” with its asinine, stereotypical India portrayals! Connery was more enthusiastic and in better shape for “NSNA.” (In his previous outing as Bond, he looked like George Lazenby’s father - and was not nearly as effective.) By the way, it was his intention to do this one film, rather than a series. Michel Legrand’s music was, as usual, classy and original. (For this Bond devotee, even John Barry was getting tiresome and repetitive.) His collaboration with Alan and Marilyn Bergman on the title song reunited the team from the original “Thomas Crown Affair.” And let’s not leave out Herb Alpert and Sergio Mendez. The worst Bond film of the 1980s, really? As opposed to “A View To A Kill?” (And don’t get me started on the ‘70s crud!) For me, this was a much-needed, refreshing change!

The film is bad but the highlight is Sean Connery back as 007. The film could have been a lot worse if George Lazenby was cast.Enjoy your KZfaq videos.

It’s easy to beat up on ‘Never’ but it is much much better than Connery’s previous two Bonds, has more more charisma than any of Dalton’s or Craig’s sulky showings, and it was good fun to see the contrast between Connery’s and Moore’s portrayals of the character in real time.

Don't agree that "Thunderball" was the "most boring" 007 film. It's a great movie - "The Biggest Bond of All!"

I like the movie. It’s not great but still entertaining. I also enjoyed Largo and Fatima. I thought they were both good Bond villains who should be a bit over-the-top.

The Villain is well... but i like the film generally and certainly faster pace and more things than original Thunderball. The Video game play off and electric shocks, i liked and Basinger is beautiful as always and Fatima well..... Theres enough to keep entertained i think but i agree, its not one of the classics wit a mix of good and bad in it.

Odd that Connery chose to do a Bond movie that had so many of the comedy elements he claimed to despise in the Moore films.

Completely disagree with the verdicts. Never Say Never Again is a great Bond film with many of my favourite characters, moments and lines. I like the villain a lot (Christoph Waltz in Spectre reminds me of him, but isn’t as good) and Fatima Blush is absolutely *FANTASTIC* - *LOVE* her! She’s wonderfully unhinged and OTT - so much better than e.g. Grace Jones in A View to a Kill. There are so many great moments in this film; it’s classic Bond and, I think, massively under appreciated, not helped by reviews like this, which just seem to want to bash it for being what it is. (E.g. why go out of the way to be nasty about the score? It’s actually highly memorable.) My own main criticisms of this film are: 1. M is stupid and irritating; 2. Rowan Atkinson ruins it in just the same way as John Cleese ruins later Bond films with his own feeble cameos; and 3. The film is simply too long and outstays its welcome, especially towards the end, where it drags and loses interest. A bit of judicious editing could have fixed that. But even so, this is a terrific Bond film overall, and every bit as good as many of the ‘fully official’ ones.

I used to have a fan edit of this movie called "Thunderball II: Never Say Never Again" (which doesn't make much sense If you watch the films back to back I know) where they basically put a lot of the "official move" stuff like the gun barrel, and the JB theme back in. They robbed the soundtrack and title sequence from Thunderball (and others). They actually didn't do much to the structure of the film, other than tighten up some of the goofy stuff. Surprising just how much it improved the movie, easy beats Diamonds and the original Thunderball and half the Moore offerings (IMO of coarse). Sadly this was a while back and it was on RW CD's, came to play it one day and 💩.

It's the sort of thing out kids are more interested in while they're school age, especially secondary. The secondary schools up and down the country should teach our kids more about James Bond than just simply force onto them Shakespeare, Tolstoy or Dostoyevsky. I don't just mean Ian Fleming the creator of Bond as a man himself who lived only 56 years (1908-64), but more for his lead character who all age groups will identify with. Incidentally, Fleming also created Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, the Story he wrote well before coming up with the end product of Secret Agent 007, James Bond.
