I never told anyone about my OCD, I just lived it in my head…constantly….over….and over. I just thought it was normal, and no one seemed to notice. It can be mental torture when you are in a spiral and can’t stop it. Not something to take lightly and I wouldn’t wish it on anyone.

Why would anyone say it's all in your head. Yeah it is, where else would my ocd be? In my car?

Like, so is schizophrenia, brain cancer, and headaches. “All in your head” is so archaic. We KNOW things exist even when we can’t easily see or measure them (yet). As far as addressing the meaning behind the idiom, thoughts are real. They are just thoughts, but they are real thoughts. A person’s internal experiences cannot be made more or less real based on what someone else says, and someone saying this is either lacking empathy and/or critical thinking.

Not helpful when someone says “you need to let it go.” Helpful when my partner sees I’m struggling and we sit down and play with our guinea pigs. 😊

I never realized how intertwined my anxiety and OCD were until this video, wow! I also assumed that much of my struggles were a result of my anxiety but now I’m realizing that they were just my OCD raising my anxiety, so fascinating. I’m the person who sees someone whispering or staring and I instantly think the worst that they’re talking about me or thinking negatively about me and I’m constantly over apologizing for existing and being in other’s ways and I see now how that can be my OCD more than anxiety. Fascinating stuff!

That didn't bother me since content is key. But to get the content we need to be able to hear and hearing Dr. Nate was a bit of a challenge even turning up my hearing aids. And when I had them turned up the sound effects were pretty loud. I had the volume settings up all the way on KZfaq and my laptop.

Oh no... I've definitely told my friend with ocd that everything would be ok. She has such a look of relief on her face that I thought I had done the right thing. Ignorance is such a tricky opponent. You'll never know when it will strike. She kept coming to me for reassurance so instinctually I felt that I had become a crutch for her. So instead I tried to validate her emotions without reassuring her it would be ok. I wish I had the phrase you used in this video at the time. Maybe I'll have a chance to use it in the future though. Thanks for your help.

❤ you are a great friend! I have GAD (not OCD), and if she hasn’t already, I suggest you show her this video and ask if it sounds like her experience or if she has any differing opinions. (To honor her individual circumstances and comorbidities.) Then tell her you will try to be an even better friend by [however you will change], so you don’t just change your behavior out of nowhere (from her perspective). As someone with an anxiety disorder, unexplainable changes are very scary and disorienting. Again I want to say, you are a good and decent person for doing your best and changing when you learn more. So many people lack the humility to self-reflect and admit they can do better when new information is presented.

Even my mom tried to admire my illness but sometime she still unintentionally hurt me by "so hard to live with you". I know she doesnt mean it. Even my best friends, for sure they can not understand it, i remember in the past she told me that im so picky and live like a princess with high standard. I i stop hangout with her for a year. Luckily that we came back lol. They never know how our life truely are. We're not proud for being an OCD. We dont like to be "that clean, that perfectionist,..etc". We doubt about our memories and exhausted. Swear the fee of paying for using water monthly is triple time to compare to normal people..

This video was a great overview of what not to do. You mentioned before that people should seek counselors who are experts in their particular mental health challenge. While I and many of my siblings have generalized anxiety, and are a strong support system for each other during our anxious moments. I struggle to understand OCD and struggle to support my brother when he needs it. Who are OCD go-to experts on KZfaq? Who could help him? And who can help me be a better support?

I was diagnosed with OCD and every once in a while, my family will ask me, "You look anxious. How is your OCD?" I love that they do this. They show me they care about my feelings, but they let me put a name to what those feelings are!

To be honest, sometimes people telling me I’m acting crazy is reassuring, and sometimes it’s just anxiety that I’m battling, and it helps me be more sure of myself, but other times it’s the reassurance that is never enough, and then I need them to tell me that for everything (because I sometimes doubt whether I have ocd, or if I’m in the wrong in some decisions I’ve made). Reassurance isn’t always bad, right? Especially if we don’t ask for it over and over and we’re okay with it after one time?

I have had OCD for over 60years and there is a basic awareness that it is 'All in my head' Not the silly 'Its all in your head that the average person ahem 'thinks' Its a brain condition of sorts and can be managed if I am up to doing what is required . As i get older depression seems to be more the issue. Reassurance nah load of nonsense. Today I am reasonably ok with being fundamentally alone in an uncaring universe ;-) Tomorrow might be different....
