Never throw away your plug, Smart ideas for machining engineering
This is one of the functions of the spark plug. By utilizing a spark plug material made of very hard ceramic, it can be used to carry out a friction technique to expand the metal.This method is very effective for connecting pipes so they don't come loose

This is absurd, if you can afford a lathe surely you can afford a handheld tubing expander which wouldn't ruin the integrity of the tubing and be 10x faster. People come up with too many hair brained "hacks" these days.

You would need to purchase a set of expanders to cover a variety of thin wall tubes. This works for all the tube sizes you can get onto your lathe.
@jimhmod

but this method can make any size and I'm not sure it affects the integrity versus the cold expander method. It might even be less stressing since heat is involved

@@jimhmod A small handheld, hydraulic tubing expander is quite versatile when it comes to sizing up the tubing, you can also heat the tubing up with a small propone torch if you desire. As clever as his method seems the metal is actually being thinned out and some of it is being removed as well so overall it's going to end up being weaker IMO.

The idea is interesting. I'm going to try that ! What heat index do you recommend for spark plug selection ? ;-) More seriously, I imagine that you need a fairly high rotation speed to produce heating. And I suppose you can't use too much thickness.

@@mecabricofaster than slow. Not as fast as really fast lathes usually spin about 750-1000k rpms. This one appears to be closer to the 750 range. That’s about where you want to be for turning metal down.
@mecabrico
@mecabrico 5 ай бұрын
@@Scummy_shovel: Thank you for the clarification. This is also a bit of what I imagined. I suppose the metal needs to heat up to become more easily moldable. I haven't tried it yet; but I tell myself that it would be a good complement to the flow drilling that I already practice. Here too, we use a really high speed (on a smaller diameter). We run around 3000 RPM.
@Scummy_shovel
@Scummy_shovel 5 ай бұрын
@@mecabrico I’d imagine your thinking is correct and more speed making more heat would prob be more effective. I have played around with friction welding on my lathe and max gears mine does 1800 rpm’s and it friction welds decently fast enough. I was just tough by my dad who was a machinist the “correct” speeds for turning metal. I guess that speed is really just to benefit not over heating and cooking the tool and part. I have certainly turned stuff faster and it worked out just fine.
