Centrally located in Buenos Aires the 25sqm El Camarín occupies a triangular space in a 1950’s building previously left empty due to its small size. A unique scalloped balcony screen allowed iR architecture to incorporate the balcony into an expanded living area. The bedroom was relocated and separated from the living area with a combined storage/shelving unit that slides underneath the bed. Polished concrete throughout connects each part of the home, leading through to the bathroom where a multifunctional ladder allows access to the rooftop terrace. A hidden feature that provides an oasis of calm within the busy city.

I concur with other commentators that this floor plan was particularly challenging. I think the designers did a wonderful job of making the space livable and carving out so many great storage solutions. I also really like the way they integrated the bathroom and laundry area. I don't like it when the laundry is visually connected to the kitchen. Piles of dirty dishes AND dirty clothes are not a good combo! I also like the simple back-painted glass back splash in the kitchen. Reminiscent of sea glass. Well done!
@deltastate3936
@deltastate3936 3 жыл бұрын
I think the laundry would be better in the kitchen - integrated laundry so that it is not asthetically visible BUT with the benefit of almost doubling the width of the kitchen worktop. The space above the washing machine in the current location in the bathroom is kind of a redundant space. I don't know why dirty clothes would ever be on display in a kitchen even if a washing machine is in the kitchen?
@TheSteveAS
@TheSteveAS 3 жыл бұрын
@@deltastate3936 I appreciate your well considered feedback Delta. But I can promise you from personal experience, having the laundry area in the kitchen means both are on display and commingle. I kick away piles of laundry waiting to be washed in order to make my morning coffee. Not ideal.
@deltastate3936
@deltastate3936 3 жыл бұрын
@@TheSteveAS fair enough - seems you keep your dirty laundry next to your washing machine? I didn't realise ppl did that, I've not seen that in all the homes I've seen... but in any case I would think it a simple change to make to store laundry basket elsewhere if it means almost doubling the width of the kitchen worktop. In terms of practicality and usability of the space it just makes more sense

I love that the old balcony was transformed into an additional (sun)room, it definitely adds to the apartment as a whole. My question is, why not add another skylight above the living area and attach the ladder to that instead of the ladder in the bathroom while you were renovating the apartment. It feels very awkward to have to move through the showering area, especially if you want to have friends over
@ivywong7850

@@ivywong7850 I realize that it might have taken some space, but when they added the balcony to the living space, there would have been opportunities that allowed them to integrate a stairs there by making the glass doors a bit shorter on the left side, or right next to the entrance door?

I'm thinking it's due to budget constraints, and another commenter suggested it might be that a sky light already existed in the bathroom and so they worked with what was there rather than put a new one in which is apparently expensive - if money was no object I agree it would be better to access the roof terrace from the living space but if money were no object they would probably live in a bigger space...

They've done such a great job with an unusual floor space. That roof top area really would create a bit of sanity saving space, it would be interesting to see how it develops in terms of livability after a few years. I think I'd use that area a lot. Personally I'd need the bedroom space to double as a nice sofa somehow - maybe with strategically placed cushions and a tv on the opposite wall. I like the effect of the perforated, white metal on the balcony (despite it not being as street pretty), I'd be interested in a similar idea in an area of my own house - especially if it makes it less wet.

I love this small apartment! Great work on a very challenging floor plan! I’m really impressed that they got permission for that scope of work with this balcony - most likely not possible in Europe. My mind blew up when I saw there is more cool stuff (roof top)!

Marvelous episode. The architect firm was amazing. I think we need more extended version of this episode including time frame and costs because we have a difficult time now with our economy and this is an spectacular example of what can be accomplish with such few resources at our disposal. I love the peforated screens. Although it does give me a sense of claustrophobia. The two frames in the middle was openable, I wish the corresponding peforated screen frames would do the same, bringing both lights and a feeling of escapable liberty into the space. Other than that the architects had done a wonderful job for this unit.

I do really love what they did with the place but curious as to where do they sit when indoors? No sofa, no armchairs, not even floor cushions or beanbags? It’s like a place you sleep in but don’t ‘chill’ in? Very imaginative though…

The curved stationary screens are separate from the glass wall and its c windows, which open inwards. You can see best at 2:50 - 3:00 . I suppose the folding doors are useful for blocking street noise at night, or to keep the room cooler in hot weather, as A says.
