This is not a video against drum sampling. Not in the least. You just shouldn’t go into mixing a record thinking you need to use samples to make your mix rock.
You shouldn’t feel like you need to use a drum sample. You can use your natural drums. No really. It is very possible. And very easy. This super quick little trick is not dependent on using these exact plugins or even the same DAW that I am using here. So Monty think just because you don’t use Pro tools that you can’t also do this for your own drums.
Do this can free up so much time searching and searching through endless drum libraries. You just have to get the sound you want from the start with the actual drums you are using on the record. And COME ON. If you’re recording an awesome drummer they probably want to hear their own snare on the project.
This is not a video against drum sampling. Not in the least. You just shouldn’t go into mixing a record thinking you need to use samples to make your mix rock.

One extra trick is to use linear phase eq as an alternative for the highpass since a normal minimum phase eq causes phase cancellation below the filter frequency in this scenario so you get a dip in your frequency response right below the lowcut frequency. Of course, this can also work to your advantage.

Really great tip! I like what you do at the folder level to tune the snare into a much better sound, had not seen that part of the method used like that yet. I originally saw this from Warren Huart at his Produce Like a Pro channel, and have been using it on my drum recordings since. Have you also tried to use a Downward Expander for a very similar effect? I was told that Butch Vig uses expanders on Tom mics (especially with Foo) to get a nice isolated hit without the bleed, and have been using it when I close mic the Toms; really cool. I use it on the Snare now too, as it eliminates the need for the duplicate track. Only downside is it does drop you overall gain for the hits down some, but I've found a compressor can help bring those back. Anyway, LOVE your channel and your attitude towards this industry, lots of great tips and insight for the home studio and the pros alike!
@RecordingStudioLoser
@RecordingStudioLoser 3 жыл бұрын
I have tried expanders (or multi band comps like Fab Filter Pro MB that does this). But it doesn’t seem fast enough. And the ratio is hard to pin in the right position without sounding unnatural. And it seems overall less predictable. It’s still a great trick and I will sometimes still reach for it. But when I really need control I do the phase trick.

Although a fan of 'natural' sounding drums I was obliged to get a set of Gates for my old PA Hire rig. It was Required by customers. The gates DO give separation but they also bring their own problems with them too. With no-limits recording these days at least we have the luxury of being able to apply such gating After the fact and decide whether or not we want it.

Depends. If there’s some clean transient to grab onto. Yes. I don’t think it would work on everything.
@mikespink2037
@mikespink2037 3 жыл бұрын
So much easier and cleaner just to take multi samples of the drummers kit on the recording session itself. Then sepearate single hits from flams and fills. Replace all single hits with the clean sample - and then any fills or flams to taste ! So easy to do this using Massey’s DRT - as you can learn the exact envelope of the original snare and the so the replacement is super sample accurate and phase coherent. You also end up with 2 totally clean trigger tracks in case you want to use any additional 3rd party samples ! This way you keep the original drum sound in tact but give yourself options !
@RecordingStudioLoser
@RecordingStudioLoser 3 жыл бұрын
That totally works. I love Massey DRT for that purpose. But in an event like this sometimes you aren’t provided with samples from a kit, this will work.

How would you attack this technique with a multi-mic'd snare? For example I used a 57 with a little pencil condensor attached to it for snap, then had a c1000 on snare bottom. Do I need to flip 3 channels and do them all individually? It's heating my brain up.

@RecordingStudioLoser
@RecordingStudioLoser 3 жыл бұрын
I would use it! I’m nit totally sure it’s different. More that i haven’t been able to find a downward comp that’s fast enough. Or precise enough on the detector in especially louder bleed situations. You still get that “SHWOW” effect with expanders that isn’t totally desirable and definitely gives away what’s Happening. I’d love to help develop/ try it out if you make one!!

Recording Studio Loser interesting. What you’ve built here is a kind of noise gate and it sounds like a good one. But I’m just trying to understand why it sounds different from existing noise gate plugins. Maybe it’s the sidechain filter that allows you to ignore the bass drum.

@tommibjork
@tommibjork 3 жыл бұрын
This is a cool trick to get more punch but I might be the only one with this thought... You are loosing a lot of high end of the snare and EQ will not fix it. There is no way you can remove any frequency and also keep it with this method. Yes you get better attack but the snare sounds as it was played behind a curtain. Maybe that is the sound you want, then it's great. You can blend signals to remove those from another, like modulating wave from a big background noice but it would need more complex signal processing.
@RecordingStudioLoser
@RecordingStudioLoser 3 жыл бұрын
When your doing it right the top end your losing are the cymbals. The snare sound should he totally intact. Because there is nothing to cut it out when you hear the snare. You can try setting up another buss and phase canceling that to hear the reverse what what this process is doing. So essentially you hear cymbals playing and dropping out when the snare hits. If there is top end lost you’ll hear the top end of the snare playing during this test. Keep in mind I’m doing this to snare top. Not bottom where most the top end comes from. I normally want this and punch from snare top. Which is also the mic with top end cymbal bleed.

first of all, Thank you for knowing what you are talking about. This isn't a big secret thing, but it can be confusing, "such as the routing". You have two identical mono tracks, one of these tracks are 180 out of phase. They are both routed to a "buss". Is this a mono buss? Next you apply a compressor to one of the dup tracks, I assume it would be the out of phase track but, I guess it really wouldn't matter. You then dial in the compressor "VERY HARD" to only react or duck or "limit" the sound you actually want to hear "prosses on the buss". Am I right so far? You then add an EQ on the same dup track to filter what you don't want to hear on the buss? This is where things go south for me. I am not using this on a drum. I am trying to use it on vocal mics in live recordings, I edit vocals down to fraises cutting out all blead when no one is singing but, when that fraise comes in there is the blead. When EQ' ing and compressing I of course, EQ and compress the blead. In context of my mixes, it's not that noticeable to anyone but me. I love all of my raw tracks to be as completely isolated as possible. Is this possible with this method and if so , what am I doing wrong? Thank you for your knowledge.

I’m not sure this will work in a vocal. The reason this works is because of the high transient of the drum without seeing your track it’s hard to tell what could be done.either way. I wouldn’t really recommend this technique for vocals. Have you tried something like IZotope Rx?

Got here from "HoboRec Recording Studios" KZfaq channel who mentioned you. This trick looks incredible, but I just don't know what I'm doing wrong. Copy snare track: check. Flip duplicate snare track: check. "Full on" compressor on duplicate track: Check. Combine the two tracks to a single track: Check. From here what I hear on the combination track is my snare a bit like with a good gate. Hi hat is still bleeding just at the end of the tail. I would stop here. But then this EQ thing comes along. When I sweep the HP filter, it's just adding the frequencies below the "cursor". I just don't get it. What is the EQ suppose to do? I'm not sure I'm getting it. What am I doing wrong? Thanks for your time and knowhow.

Hey! Tighten up the compressor. Make sure that attack is super fast. And the release… start with it maybe 100-120ms. Pretty hard. And set the threshold to just grab the transient. What should happen is that is that it should sound like a gay that is Way to hard. And your only hearing the attack of the snare poke through. The EQ then comes in to essentially removes the phase flipped portion. So you can start with a HP and slowly bring it up to get more low end back in your original snare. Because it’s no longer being phased cancelled out.

Is delay compensation on? Is your compressor set as fast as it will go? Try a few different comps. Let me know what you find.
@grunions9648
@grunions9648 3 жыл бұрын
The attack might be cutting off the start of the transient, which could make it sound muddy. Needs a very fast attack, so some compressor types (optical for example) probably won't work. If you have choices, try a 'clean' modern compressor.

I may have to sleep on this to find the answer myself. But why is this different then just a fast gate? it cancels everything only not when you hit the snare. so the hihat will also come through when the snare is hit. its like an inverted gate. that you fase switch so it becomes a gate. I dont see it.
@RecordingStudioLoser
@RecordingStudioLoser 3 жыл бұрын
A gate is a little different. Not as dependable in some situations. Certainly not as fast. AND. I I didn’t want it canceling the low end. That split second it opens for the snare them closes you don’t perceive the cymbal bleed the same as with a gate which will opens and close fully for a set amount of time.

honestly interesting technique but couldnt u just have used a gate with sidechain filters?Thats how I do it and it works really well, especially when u eq in the sidechain with a sharp peak at the fundamental of the instrument you wanna isolate
@RecordingStudioLoser
@RecordingStudioLoser 3 жыл бұрын
Not really. It will help you reduce bleed overall.. but what you lack is only effecting a certain frequency range over a cerain amount of time. So where a gate could be too grabby and sound unnatural, this wont. If your bleed issue isn't that bad and the groove of the drummer is slow enough so the gate wont interfere with the resonant decay of the drum... Then a gate will get it done.

@RecordingStudioLoser 3 жыл бұрын
In the sense that a gate ducks below a set threshold.... yes.. More like a very tuned gate for your given source that will only react with your source, within a specified frequency range. Try it yourself. Set up a gate, then set this up. Let me know what goes down.

@@RecordingStudioLoser I did try it a long time ago, and as cool as it is it didn't do quite what I needed. These days I do a crazy trick though, try it out sometime: Copy the track like in your video. Use a linear phase EQ on one of the two while soloing it, and HIGH PASS it so you're isolating only where the harsh cymbal bleed is happening. Now, all the processing will be happening BEFORE the EQ on the HIGH PASSED track, ao the high pass is happening AFTER this part: use a compressor with lookahead, like the free ReaComp (just set pre-compression to match the attack). Attack time at 10ms is fine. Max the ratio to absolutely SMASH the transients. But set the threshold to where it isn't reacting to the cymbal bleed itself at all. Set the release as short as it needs to be to only duck the snare hits completely. Now you have an "isolated" cymbal bleed track! This part is important as hell: copy the entire chain over to the other snare track, then turn off the EQ band so it's not doing anything to it, and set the compressor to a 1:1 ratio so it isn't doing anything either. You are simply matching the added latency to keep the phase coherency! Now phase flip the high passed track, and voila. You just deleted the cymbal bleed. You may now adjust the high pass frequency to taste.

@@MFKitten It sounds like you are doing the exact same thing as whats in this video, only in a different configuration. Not knocking it and I will for sure try it out. Im just thinking it through and it sounds like the same idea. Whats different? Both procedures are creating a phase cancelation for everything except for the transients above the threshold of the compressor and ignoring the low end.

holy crap it works! Thank you for the technique! I have a SM57 on top/bottom of my snare and MD421-II's on the toms (but I didn't hit/use toms in this case). I gate the toms and was just used to the bleed in the snare but anything that can help get the dang high end lessened from all the hats/cymbals is worth it! I hastily did the reverb so it isn't as good as it can be but I'll do it better in the future. so cool kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mb6FdN2gyrmuYH0.html

Your not an idiot. It's different because its not effecting the entire spectrum of the drum.
