This is so great! I sometimes feel like I have to provide an extra activity or something to "spice up" the lesson, but these manuals are new and ready to help them engage in the scriptures and grow closer to Christ. I'm thankful for this and for you! Continually learning and growing....what the gospel is all about!

I would like to add a correction/clarification to 9:45 that we should not call on students: We invite them to exercise their agency. We invite: that is our call as a teacher. We can ask for volunteers to answer, and then ask them follow up questions, or invite a specific person if they would be willing to answer or share, but calling on a student removes their agency, and can often lead to embarrassment. This is instruction given by Elder Bednar on teaching. It is also the teaching style exemplified by the Savior in the scriptures. We are of course guided by the Spirit, and may sometimes feel inspired to ask a particular person, but there is a subtle difference between "calling on" and "inviting"--one preserves agency and one infringes.

Thank you. That is a much better way to word what I meant - "invite a specific person if they would be willing to answer or share." If you have developed a classroom of love, respect and purpose (Gospel Teaching and Learning Handbook (GTLH), p. 13), and prepared students properly, inviting students by name is a valuable and tool in Gospel teaching. This actually increases a student’s opportunity to exercise agency. We define the volunteer aspect of our church this way, “people get assignments known as “callings” that allow them to participate in different aspects of our worship” (lds.org, “A Church of Volunteers”). There is nothing that infringes agency when we are called by name to accept an assignment to speak or serve. We can always accept or decline - agency. It’s even listed as a specific skill in our training handbooks, “Call on students by name. Calling on students by name to respond to a question or make a comment helps foster a learning environment of love and respect” (GTLH, p. 63). But I agree that inviting students by name is an even better wording. In "Teaching in the Savior’s Way," there is a very strong emphasis on the use of the term, “invitation.” It will not always be the right approach to invite them to read or answer a question by name but it should definitely be a tool in your teacher tool belt.
