Got an SRPJ85 a few months ago and love it. A gently beautiful watch in my view. Managed to get a little discount on it on FCW which didn't hurt!

I always look forward to a new Seiko. A SRPJ85 arrived this afternoon. Open the box and am instantly reminded of how thick their watches are. I’m not a spec snob and actually prefer Hardlex for construction site use, I’ve shattered multiple sapphire crystals. But the thickness kills them for me. A watch this diameter should not be so thick. Many microbrands offer better case specs at a similar price point and give the masses the sapphire crystal they want.

First of all, thank you for taking the time and effort for making the video. I’m new to the watch world and bought the SRPJ89 (emerald green) to go with more dressed up clothing or a formal occasion. If you love the looks of the larger versions but they’re too big for you…definitely pickup one of these new 36mm versions. I recently got the larger SRPG39 (for $100!) and it has rekindled my love of Seiko!

I have the Lorus Lumibrite field watch (also made by Seiko, but quartz). Easily my most comfortable watch, and the thought of that footprint with an automatic movement, man that's a GREAT proposition

I love not caring about watch sizes because I can go from wearing my MM300 one day to my 36mm nomos and soon one of these. Whether a watch is big or small it’s a win for me lol

The original design of WWII field watch case size was 35mm to 38mm. WWII soldiers, especially in the European theater of war, wore long sleeved shirts and field jackets (has to be slim enough to go under the sleeves). Field watches were also designed to be simple with visible 1-12 Arabic numbers and for agility. There is a rule in design, "Form follows function." A US G.I. carried 60 lbs of equipment and a 10 lb. rifle. Not sure why anyone would want to make a big field watch. Unless of course, you want to hit your enemy with it. Technically, the SRPJ87, and SRPJ89 are pilot watches not field watches (outer dial had 60 minute markings by 5 min. increments).

One thing I love about this size is the inner circle aligns with the date wheel edge. Unlike the full size ones (which annoys me)

Looking forward to these watches. It'd be nice not to have to do the "Sieko shake" when switching watches. Shame about the crystal though. I agree, for $280 it should be sapphire. Looking foward to more small Seiko 5's with this same movement.

*Great decision BUT the minutes hand is* *_TOO SHORT._* I'll wear it for 1 month in case the movement "settles in", get a set of hands for the 39.4mm version then drop it off at thelocal watchmaker for a regulation and swap of the hands, voilà.

Are all 5 watches from SRPJ series have matte finish case? Or only SRPJ83 and SRPJ85? On some videos SRPJ81 looks like its polished silver instead of matte.

Excellent development. Coincidentally i was just looking at my colleagues' green SNK and reminded of the beige dial i had a long time ago; great style and realible movement, but always wished it had hand-wound and better water resistance. I believe the SRPJ87 will be a great replacement. Problem is price... after i got my wonderful Orient Kamasu II for less than $200 it's hard to accept much else with lesser specifications that goes for a higher price.

This Seiko watch: a-Delay 1 minute a day. b-Luminescence failure: the 12 HRS mark is not differentiated, at night all the fluorescent marks look the same. c-Very thick watch for small wrists (12-13cm). d-The watch is 15'40mm thick (the strap goes behind the watch). e- The convex glass (retro) makes it lose visibility due to the multiple brightnesses.

I would stick with the SNK8** series. Work horses and if you search around you can get them under $100.

This would be true unless you’re actually looking for the classic field watch dial layout, which Seiko briefly produced in the SNKN33, but are impossible to find. This at least provides the dial and hand winding + hacking that have been lacking in the SNK80x series.

@@MrJamesDuffy Agreed, if you’re referring to the 7S26 movement in the SNK(N) series of watches. This new line is still pricey compared to other brands out there offering classic field watches in this size, but hey, if you want to have a Seiko 1-12 w/ 24 hr inner classic layout, in a classic smaller size, this is pretty much it.

It might just be me, but I really dislike the 24 hour markings on these dials. They would be a lot cleaner without them. Also, needs sapphire too. Then you’d have a watch I might buy.

Seiko need to start making quartz versions of all their best sellers. These new releases are aesthetically pleasing but the movements are not long standing in the accuracy department and too cheap to waste money on servicing.

36 mm is way too small imo. 39 mm is the minimum I'll go, both because it looks funny on the wrist and because I can't read anything smaller. 41-43 mm is my favorite size.

Hopefully, they will be straight. Seiko is one of those brands that charge more for shaky quality. Less on build. Really have to think of the investors. They need that return. I'll buy every watch with seiko heart and Chinese nameplate. I wouldn't buy a seiko. Quality is not good enough.

I don't know if maybe they're getting carried away with all these smaller sizes? 42mm, became 40mm, and then 38mm, now 36mm? It's too far for me! I'm OK with it as an option to, say a 39mm?? I'm just concerned there's not that much of a market for these smaller sizes. Unless, they can make the 36mm THE size for ladies tool watches and ladies start buying tool watches. 😒

Seiko already makes several of these field watches in 39mm. 36mm is a suitable size for a field watch. As a person with modest wrists it can be a struggle to find even a 40mm field watch that doesn't have a long lug to lug. Plenty of large watches out there for those that want them. I welcome this trend.

@TheeYellowDart Fine, I am just not sure there's really that much demand for manufacturers to start turning out loads of 36mm watches? I honestly think 38mm is small enough to accommodate all but the largest of wrists. 36mm on the other hand is going to look silly on my 7 1/4" wrist. On top of that, there are scores of great vintage watches in the 34-37mm range . My fear is that it's a bridge too far for most people.

@@watchchimp3102 The market isn't exactly hurting for 38mm + watches. I have a 6.5" wrist and can barely pull off most 40mm due to the lug height. Yes, there are plenty of vintage watches available, I own several; however I don't always wear them BECAUSE they are vintage. A tough 36mm field watch with modern spec fits the bill for my case use. I don't think people with modest wrists should be relegated to soley buying vintage. As for small watches looking silly on large wrists, I feel this has been pushed onto us by marketing to an extent. I have several WWII issued watches that are sub 33mm; and Men wore these without issue. Also, 36mm opens the doors for women who are interested in watches but were almost always given "female" selections. Some are okay, most are just an afterthought.

@TheeYellowDart Point being, the industry swings in an all or nothing fashion. First everything is going 40mm+. There's a lot of "influencers" with small wrists complaining that they need smaller watches; then when they come out with smaller watches, well naturally they sell, because they filling a niche that hadn't been addressed. And yes, I think these smaller watches could be just the ticket for female watch enthusiasm! My main issue is when it's assumed that the whole of the market is headed that way. My feeling is that these new smaller sizes will sell briskly initially, but ultimately just might not have the legs to maintain sales down the line. Banking on women buying watches is probably not a good bet in 2023. My wife used to wear a field watch, but now? She wears an Apple watch. I know very few women who wear a real watch; actually I don't know any. I really don't expect anyone to wear vintage any more than I do. Which is rarely, but I don't wear them because they don't suit me; too small. But, it's an option for smaller wristed guys. I have dozens of vintage watches that I occasionally wear, but if I was smaller, I would wear them much more. I used to pick up pre-owned watches, that once I got them I realized the previous owner sold them because they were too big for them. But, recently I bought a couple watches that I likely wouldn't have, if I would have known they were so small. Ultimately, there is no one size fits all, but a 38mm-40mm comes closest depending in the style of watch.

@@watchchimp3102 Fair assessment, especially for women in term of general use/fashion. I still see a lot of watches on women in certain professional fields though; but this generally isn't the market for watch companies to thrive on. I do own a few 38-40mm watches. I have a 38mm Centric Instruments field watch and it has a 45mm lug to lug which I find is just perfect for me. I'm a little morr discerning now with size, but every now and then I'll still buy a watch based soley on the style, regardless of size (divers for example can be a challenge to find). My spouse wears a smart watch most days, but has recently asked me to find her a "true" watch. Even the most humble enthusiast acts as an influencer or sorts for their friends and family :)
