FYI, the drop tanks are on the clear sprue because the pylons were transparent on the real aircraft. I’d guess they were made out of Perspex. This was so the fuel connections between the tank and the wing could be easily inspected. The Eduard 1/48 Tempest kit also has clear pylons.

Cheers Russell and thanks for the info. That is really interesting - I'll look into it further as I've not seen it on any other aircraft. There was presumably some internal structure apart from the fuel pipes.

The clear fuel tanks include their mounting fairings which were, indeed made of molded clear plastic over the un-aerodynamic Pylon. Mask off the fairing and paint the tank. I see from the visible cannon barrels that this is a "Series 1" Tempest (Early Production, of which only about 70-80 were made.) These were converted Typhoon fuselages and had the Typhoon's Wing Mounts, necessitating a small bulge in the wing root on the uppers to accommodate an elbow joint strut. The later production type flipped this elbow so the bulge appears on the lower wing/fuselage area. The other change from the early series was the use of a new cannon set with shorter barrels, hiding the cannon entirely within the wing, with only the blast tube ports showing on the leading edges. Almost all of the "Series 1" machines went to 150 wing, and any replacements were of the later "Series 2" type, so as late as mid-1945 you could see a mix of them both in photos of planes from 150 wing.
@garys_stuff
@garys_stuff 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for that Brett. One of the joys of this KZfaq thing is finding people who have such knowledge on things one has never come across before. Now I can't wait for Airfix to do a series 2 Tempest so I've the excuse to do the drop tanks with transparent fairings! Seriously, thank you for this.
@brettpeacock9116

@@garys_stuff IF you have AM decals you can do a Series 2 because they have already provided the wings, just omit the cannon barrels! and drill out the mounts for the tanks, which "Should" be already in place on the underside part of the wing. Everything else is in the kit already.

Now , Gary , this video was worth 21.26 of anyone's time . A lovely little kit , I couldn't help but think ; Hawker Typhoon whilst watching , though . The early version mentioned in the history section , the one powered by the , Bristol Centaurus , gave rise to my all time favourite prop aircraft ; the Hawker Sea fury , which if you have ever seen one you will know it has a sound all it's own . A build of one of those , if available , would be as real treat . Keep up the good work , Gary . Always a pleasure to watch .

Thanks Tony! I will lay my cards on the table right now and say the Sea Fury is my favourite aircraft of all time. I think it was watching one at Biggin Hill in the 1970s and being captivated by the growl of the Centaurus with the whistling from the exhausts as it rocketed past. There will be a Sea Fury here, I promise - maybe reasonably soon...

When I think of the Hawker Tempest 5, my memory immediately recalls reading the latter chapters of Pierre Clostermanns thrilling exploits in his truly amazing memoir 'The Big show'. He flew these beasts from 1944 into 45 and his accounts particularly, flying this beast over a heavily defended France, Holland and Germany are legendary and visceral. I have read no better account anywhere about such action packed 'shivering with cold naked fear' soaked but incredibly brave war heroes and these amazingly deadly but sometimes temperamental aeroplanes. PS lovely build as always. just needs a bit of weathering, oil streaks and chipping to take it from 9.9 to. 10 out of 10.😉

@@garys_stuff And yes Ive got Bees 'testing years' also. But You will most certainly enjoy the big show . He (Clostermann) flew throughout the war with the french RAF squadrons but at the latter end even though the allies were winning, it was still quite Terrifying . The author puts you right in the co kpit of this big fighter and fighting FW 190 D9s is brought into sharp focus. I know you will find it a thrilling account that just gets more and more tense as he seems to do tour after tour. PS. Did I miss something ? Cheers Eddie! There are some really good airbrush tutorials around. I think the best and most basic advice I ever got was to get the air flowing first then gently add the paint, then make sure the paint is off before stopping the air. Takes a bit of practice juggling the pushing down bit for the air and the pull back bit for the paint, but it comes soon enough. As for Tempests, I've just got the KP Tempest V to compare with the Airfix...

Ah, the pilot figure! Just got myself a 'new' Sea Harrier as part of my FAA kick. The pilot is a classic WW2 bloke with leather helmet!! Just as well I never use them. This looks a good 'un. My last Tempest was the old Frog kit built in about 1974. I recall it had a rather gimmicky clear disc with blurred blade marks to represent a turning prop. FAA kick or not, I'll be getting one of these; thanks for the video 👍
@garys_stuff
@garys_stuff 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Michael! Yes, I think I had the same problem with a Harrier - maybe even the Sea Harrier - with the Biggles figure. Its probably just a mistake importing figures from a library of CAD files into the design of the sprue, but it's still pretty shabby quality control. I too have had an FAA kick in recent years, having made one of everything flown by 800NAS during its history. I'm going to make a history video of it soon - sadly the builds are all pre-KZfaq!

@garys_stuff
@garys_stuff 2 жыл бұрын
Cheers, and yes you need one! There is probably a library of CAD parts on a server at Airfix from where designers can import the pilot figure so they don't need to design it from scratch every time. Just wish it were better modelled and the right size! IIRC the Mossie one worked out to be just under 5 ft tall... nothing against that per se, but not representative of the average RAF/FAA pilot, I believe. For every Winkle Brown there's a Joe McCarthy.

@garys_stuff

No, don't use a special glue. I try to keep the mating surfaces clean where I can, but often it doesn't make much difference anyway. Sometimes I do need to sand off a bit of primer or paint when I do a dry fit. It's often the test of how well moulded the kit is!

Glad you like it! It's odd that things like the Warhawk have a really well modelled pilot (you can see his tie, for goodness sake) but on newer kits like this and the Mossie they are small and really poorly moulded. Maybe its a dodgy 3D file they import as a standard WW2 British pilot now when they are doing sprue layouts. Several other Airfix kits just feel that bit crisper. Thanks man! What I did was lay the lines for the top surface in 3mm tape with a little dangling over the front and rear edges so they gave me a guide for the corresponding lines underneath. Sometimes I'll wrap around the tape but it needs a pretty unswept edge as it can be difficult to get the top-to-bottom transition right - or at least I can't do it all that well. Great Job Gary really enjoyed watching today. I have been building a Red Arrow Knat starter kit by Airfix. I have enjoyed it but have a question about a couple if parts not in the instructions. To cut a long story short I deducted that they were wing tanks. Is this kit a older moulding that Airfix has reissued. The second problem was the landing gear snapped apart when taking it off the spruw. I took you advice of being carefull and cut it off giving it plenty of room.. I had to use a landing gear from a P51 mustang that I had kept for kit bashing. Have you done anything like this ?

This kit is a new tool, never been issued before. The extra bits and pieces mean there will be other boxings of this later on - this is the early Tempest V, the alternative bits (like the 5-spoke wheels) were for the later Tempest Vs. As for the landing gear - what I try to do is put the parts back together using something like blu-tack to hold them in position then use a drop or two of ultra thin cement on the joints. Leave them to set, preferably overnight. Of course, it the part is damaged when it breaks - like gets bent on one end - you might have no option but to cannibalise something else like you have done. Sounds like quite the repair job!

Gday. I can say after waiting about 6 months for my kit I am quite disappointed because I have found a number of problems with mine firstly the area where the wings slide under the fuselage created a ridge along the fuselage join and the horizontal stabilisers created a gap. I don’t know if you have experienced these issues but I’d say you’ve done a great job.

I fully understand the focus on aircraft given your RAF credentials and know you've done one or two non-plane eps; even more, perhaps a warship or two, would be most appreciated, even if they're not from Airfix. One (hopefully constructive!) comment on your music - the choice is up to you entirely of course, but if you could even out the volume between it and your commentary I'd much appreciate it because the differential is quite large, in favour of the music currently. Build looks very nice. Not sure why you didn't use the kit decals for the stripes. They worked very well on the Airfix Typhoon, probably just as good here

Maybe so, but for these really large expanses I find it easier to paint them to get the panel lines. Microset and microsol sometimes just don’t do it for me. Might be doing it wrong, of course!

Hi Gary, I also have this kit and was wondering how you masked the landing gear doors so that the stripes matched those on the wing.
@garys_stuff
@garys_stuff 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Evan, I did the layout for the wings then placed the doors where they belonged when closed and marked out the edges. You can also double check by referring to the three-view in the instructions. It really isn't difficult once you get it in your head which piece goes where!
@evanhill110
@evanhill110 2 жыл бұрын
@@garys_stuff I thought of doing that method, but the gear doors sit well below the rim of the gear bay. Did you pack it out first to get the doors to sit level?

I have a little critic to ur documentary part of the video. The tempest wasn't able to shoot down a me 262. Only while starting or landing was the me 262 vulnerable to attacks. In the sky the tempest was no match for the 262.
@garys_stuff
@garys_stuff Жыл бұрын
In a straight chase, yes but Closterman talks about the Tempest V being used specifically to counter the threat of the Me262 in the ATAF forward bases and there is camera gun footage from P-51s of Me262s getting caught and shot down in dogfights - but you're right, the best chance of bagging one was to stooge around the airfield and wait for them to land.

Hi Gary can you recommend a kit to start again as I seem to have lost my mojo, any help is appreciated thanks.

Hi John, to really go back to basics (which we should all do from time to time anyway) then the new Airifx Spitfire Vc starter set is good - their code is A55001. It's the one with the stand included. It is a nice fitting kit, so you get a decent result, but it has some detail you can exploit practicing panel washes, decals setting and so on. Without anything more than what's in the box you can build a nice Spitfire. You'll get your mojo back in no time!

I’d also add the Red Arrows hawk. Mostly one colour and was an easy and fun build.

One thing I started feeling guilty about recently, the amount of sprues I'm chucking out it's absolutely ridiculous! Never used to think about it bit now building alot and full interior armour kit's the amount gets in its 70s plus! I've only got the blue n brown ♻️ bins and the plant for recycling is miles away from me not easy to get to source guilt will have to stay just now!

Some kits, like the Vulcan, produce insane amounts of plastic waste. We are really lucky that plastics are recycled as part of the normal pick-up. Would I be bothered if I had to go to the tip (by appointment only at the moment...)? Probably not.

I cannot find the V2022 tooling version anywhere (it is not on the Airfix website). All I can find is the A02109 version. Can anyone point me to somewhere selling the V2022 version please (though not e-bay)? Is there a difference between the two kits? Thanks.
@garys_stuff
@garys_stuff Жыл бұрын
Are you confusing V2022 with a product code? The Tempest V 2022 is the 2022 kit of the Tempest Mark 5. AFAIK you have the correct code as A02109, which is available on the Airfix site and elsewhere.

This looks a very poor moulding, Gary. I have built both the 109E4 and Typhoon from Airfix in this scale, and they were fantastic. The pilot is an example of the softness, but i also noted the softness of rivets on the leading edge of the wings. Very poor, and I won't be getting this kit. I am a fan of Airfix, but I'll be giving this a miss.
