Amazon Kindle Fire HD 6 Reviews
Amazon says it challenged its designers and engineers to deliver a sub-$100 tablet that was better than all the other budget tablets that it was selling in its online store. Now here's the result: the new $99 Kindle Fire HD 6, which comes in multiple color options and ships in October, with pre-orders starting now. (Release dates and availability for the UK and Australia weren't immediately known, but that converts to about £60 and AU$110.)
Amazon chief Jeff Bezos reckons that the Fire HD range is "the most powerful tablet under $100," and the company makes the boast that it offers three times the graphics performance of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 4.
Both come with a choice of 8GB or 16GB of internal storage. They also contain front and rear cameras, the latter of which Amazon rather vaguely says can "Take photos or capture videos in 1080p HD." Which probably means it's a pretty humble, low-megapixel affair.
Another thing these budget tablets appear to be is extremely robust. Amazon has put the two tablets through the wringer, and reckons that they're twice as robust as the iPad mini when it comes to surviving droppages.
Add in the Fire HD range's five bright colours and chunky, easy-to-grip designs, and you can see that they'd make great tablets for older kids (Amazon has announced an even more robust one for little 'uns).
Indeed, with Fire OS 4.0 coming as standard, Amazon has added the ability to share content between family members. ASAP (Advanced Streaming and Prediction), meanwhile, guesses what video you're likely to want to watch and pre-caches it.
Both tablets have front and rear-facing cameras, and of the two the 6-inch version is much more interesting. It's the sub-$100 version, to start, but more importantly it just feels better than the larger version. It's in that zone where nobody has been able to adequately challenge Apple's iPod touch. It's cheap enough to buy and hand to a child or a teenager, durable enough to be battered, and fast enough to not make you want to test that durability by chucking it across the room in frustration. Theoretically, at least. Add in the fact that you can watch many Amazon Prime videos offline, and it may even be an intriguing option for anybody with a Prime membership - whether or not its UI performance is up to snuff.
A $99 phablet that lets you watch The Wire on a plane for essentially free is not a bad sales pitch. It's enough to make the Fire Phone turn green with envy.
