Now that we finished our Arduino and stepper motor powered sawmill, it's time to give it a good test. We make room in our solar kiln by removing the pine boards we cut for our house's concrete forms. Before we get started on the house, we discuss our plan to mill a lumber package on the new and improved Harbor Freight sawmill. We are milling the pine we obtained from the campground and see if we need to work out any kinks before we start milling our yellow poplar for the house.
Episode 124
0:00 - Thanks for the support
3:25 - Milling loblolly pine
4:44 - Checking lumber moisture content
10:01 - Meg replaces a valve stem
18:58 - Vintage tools score
25:26 - Checking tangential shrinkage
26:18 - Unloading the solar kiln
32:12 - Pawpaw pollination
35:58 - Milling lumber with the Arduino
51:58 - Hunting morel mushrooms
55:13 - Outtakes

You have a great channel. I just found you 2 days ago. Great mixing. I feel like I am right there. I'm going on 78 years, a veteran of Korean War. Handicap legs using crutches. I am working on using solar. Built my Alaskan chainsaw mill, when I cut the first log my dreams will be answered. (Oh,I have put in for 134 years before I rest.) I love YT!

Non-propane Coleman stoves use Coleman fuel or Amoco white gas. These stoves are great for camping or cooking during power outages.

Fantastic job on the Arduino controller for your sawmill. Plus you showed other sawmill owners how to do the conversion step by step. You even provided a wiring diagram as well as the Arduino code. It is a joy to watch it work so smoothly. With the Arduino one can very cheaply computerize almost any task. I bought several of the bare Atmel 328-P chips and usually build my own boards. I do not really save money but I have made some tiny custom boards for my own use. You two continue to amaze me. I know you want to start working on your house as soon as possible and I look forward to watching as it is being built.

Thanks again for the videos, I really enjoy watching you guys. One concern I would have about removing all of the stickers from the finished wood; when the Lumber is all stacked together - I think there's a chance of mold or mildew growing on the surfaces of your finished wood.

The reason you have a variation in MC is that you should try and direct the circulating (all of it if poss) through the stickers- viewing your kiln the air has ample opportunity to take the path of least resistance so this can result in uneven drying- you can purchase an air velocity meter to measure. Ideal is 300 to 600 feet per minute. Another reason may be that the kiln temperature may have been too high initially and you "case-hardened" the material actually locking the moisture in the piece of wood.

One of the problems with your tree looks like the same problem we had with one in my youth. My grandfather came by one day and took a look at it. He didn't say anything but walked to his pickup and pulled out about five feet of rusty chain and laid it on the ground around the trunk. He told us to leave the chain (wrapped twice around the tree on the ground not touching the trunk) and wait till next year for our fruit. He died later that winter but the very next year we had a large crop of fruit. It has had the best crop ever since. When I see fruit, but it dies before getting ripe or even having the flower but no fruit, I do like my grandfather and lay some rusty metal or chain around the plant, and I always have good fruit the next year. Your problem could be lack of the right minerals. I think you found the pollination problem.

having dried a lot of lumber, measure a board not on the edges, measure a number of places not super near the edge. The edge will dry out faster than the middle. Also, lumber curling/checking/ etc is due to the board drying or taking on water UNEVENLY not heating and cooling as I have heard on other channels. the best circumstance is to keep the stickers so you get airflow on all sides of the boards until you use them.

Jon, you can move the push handle on your sawmill up about six inches, giving you that much more cutting height. Just take the two bolts out, move up to the bottom of the top frame & drill two new holes to bolt it to. With my 420 engine the exhaust does rub when I go that high, but it seems to just be a slight contact and does no harm. Plus, you're never at maximum height for long anyhow. Now, I need to look deeper at your Arduino idea...

Hi guys, I bet you are just itching to get cracking on the house site. Getting the "office" up and running first is a great idea. Thinking about the log stops on your mill. If you weld additional receiver tubes inboard of the existing tubes, you could use them to situate the cant on the mill to miss the triangular pulley belt obstruction under the saw.. That way you could cut more boards before having to reset your "zero". Cheers, EJ

You did an extremely good job giving us an idea. Hope you have at least bought a level system for your house pad. It is an item you will always use. There are cheap ones out there. I have a spirit level on an adjustable level stand with a water bubble and that works fine. I have had that for 30 years and it does the job just like a posh one. It has a laser eye on it to give you the height. Nice set of Dado blades you got from wherever. Want to seal them away from moisture and can be useful.

I agree with the linear encoder idea. The encoder could also be used to E-stop in the case there is height travel when there should not be ( drift while cutting) or no travel when there should be as in the case the brake is inadvertently left on.

Think the way you have the kiln set up. You bring the air in at the top and circulate it around the pile, in at top around the stack and out at the bottom. The inside of the stack gets less of the moving warm air so it is going to dry slower.

Tire air smells great. It is like the country. Tires are made of different rubber substitutes or even actual rubber. Now, stay with me here. You are a tech so you should have had molecular science at sometime. Atoms have components, such as neutrons, protons, positrons, and electrons. The individuals are just atoms, molecules are formed when you have a group of atoms that stick together. Without going into a week long lecture, molecules use ionic charge similar to magnetic attraction to hold atoms together to form the molecules. Think of the atoms as different size round beach balls. Some balls have lots of electrons in orbits around the nucleus, sort of like the solar system. The nucleus is in the center like the sun and the electron orbits (called valence bands) are around it like the orbits of the planets. The more electrons (planets) that are in the atom the bigger the radius from the nucleus to the outside of the atom, Hey don't leave yet I am almost done. So think of the rubber tire as one big molecule that is solid but not impermeable (Permeation: Tire rubber is not entirely impermeable, meaning air molecules can escape through the tire’s sidewalls over time. This gradual air loss, known as permeation, is a natural occurrence and can lead to a slow drop in tire pressure, even without visible damage or punctures). That is it in a nut shell but more detailed description of the process follows. The "air" inside are random non-connected molecules with very weak or no attraction to each other. I put quotes around "air" as it is a combination of Oxygen and Nitrogen and other stuff but about 78% nitrogen and 21% oxygen so total about 99% . These air molecules have loose atoms of a size that is very small nitrogen has a weight of about 14 amu with 7 electrons and oxygen weighs about 16 amu and hold 8 electrons. Now, this will seem a little bit backwards but, bear with me here. The atomic bonds (gravity, electron pull ionic pull, magnetic pull basically the strength of the bond) between atoms in the molecules of the air are different. Just as the tires are solid but not impermeable, the air is loose and randomly dispersed so the attraction between the elements in the various molecules are different causing the molecular bonds to expand or contract according to the individual characteristics of the basic elements. OK, here it is. The oxygen molecules bind two oxygen atoms to form the basic molecule and the nitrogen molecule is larger because of the number of atoms in the molecule. The "solid" tire is not really solid. Remember the beach balls. Think of the rubber tire a made up of very large beach balls, if you drop a golf ball (oxygen molecule only made up of two Ox atoms) on top of a pile of beach balls, it drops gradually through as it finds the gaps between the round surfaces of the larger beach balls. However, if you drop a soccer ball (nitrogen molecule) on the pile it just stays because it is to big to move through the gaps. Thus over time the Ox is leaked through the rubber and the nitrogen stays. If you fill your tires with a very high concentration of nitrogen the tires will not deflate over time as there is very little Ox to leak out through the impermeable rubber of the tire. 🤓
