Change of pace for todays video. I've been working on weathering various items of stock over the past few months. In this video we'll take a look at weathering a class 47 using real photographs for inspiration.

For your older project loco, you can redo the interior wall detail pretty easily by exporting a frame from this video into a photo editing software, trim and square the wall image and print a color sheet you can glue to the back wall. Gets all the detail in one shot, and I’ll bet you won’t see the difference through the windows. Cheers from across the pond!

My wife and I back in 1991 lived in West Kensington she was carrying our first child and on a nice summer evening we would go for a walk when I got home from work at Royal Mail, we would walk up to the back of West Kensington underground station where the west London line passes under the A4 and around 1930 every evening a 47/8 with matching aircon rake would pass going north I think it was a south coast to Manchester cross country service seeing your model took me back the baby is now 31 but sadly my angel passed away but junior loves the railways albeit not as much as me ,thanks Richard ,I’m planning to get one of them soon ,Mark 👍🏻😊

Another excellent tutorial, Richard. And as usual the results are very realistic indeed. From what I gather, many modellers here in the US have the same attitude toward sound as you do. I discovered this independently when after a very long break from the hobby I built a very small switching/shunting layout which uses only one loco at a time. I converted one of my old engines to DCC with sound. It was very exciting at first, but I ended up turning the master volume down quite a bit and eventually realized I was quite happy running engines with DCC but without sound. So I have sound only when that one loco comes up in the operating roster rotation. Cheers from Wisconsin!

Man... I tried my hardest to follow your instructions on benchwork. Unfortunately im not that handy. But was able to create 4- 4'×27-1/2" modules + 2- 2' x 3' modules, with 1/4" screwed on backdrops that are 20" a little taller then I intended, I was going to build lights above but decided to use these desk clipped lights that come out from the back and over the layout which it makes them look like they are floating over the layput. All the wood was mounted with heavy duty deck screws.. (hard to remove) but I shall be able to move these in and out of the bedroom they are in, if I ever move to a new house. Now im staining the wood with a ebony like finish which will make the backdrops POP with the sky blue. Im pretty F'N excited! Ive been watching your videos since you started and ive learned alot of stuff! You are a very good teacher, very precise! You are the best modeler on youtube by far. Thats alot coming from an American. 🤣 keep up the good work. Ill be excited to see more videos

An excellent bit of work on this new 47 Richard and really good to see a subtle weathering job which I prefer to a heavy weathering job, the detail on this new 47 from bachmann is incredible the lengths that bachmann have gone to on this model is great to see, to me it shows that Bachman can still be a good manufacturer who can still release a great model even with the many other manufacturers who are coming onto the scene, the sound in my opinion is acceptable, the sound to me is adequate, it does sound like a 47 and I have only heard 47s as they have gone past me when I have been videoing them on the rear of trains hauled by steam locomotives.

Another superb video Richard, full of great tips and info. Sound in locos is a no go for me as I experienced in the early days of it showing my layout next to one which had over 25 locos on full sound in the engine shed throughout the two days of the show!. Would not affect me as never had DCC due to cost of converting my fleet of 80 plus locos. However weathering is excellent when properly done. Having a few years back come into a small amount of surplus money I purchased a superb compressor and air gun for £700. They are still in their boxes!!! I somehow never got the confidence to use them but I will one day despite the fact I am getting rather old. Your video encourage me no end and I thing what holds me back is the arthritis in my fingers. Pulling the air gun levers is actually quite painful and the thought of over 1000 pieces on N gauge tock is not the best tempter to proceed. Meanwhile I shall just enjoy the excellence you give us. Cheers, Bob

Interesting to watch your techniques and the things you use. Right now I'm weathering rolling stock using acrylic paint, washes and powders. Like you when I'm done, I give a coat of matt varnish. That's a must really, for durability and especially if you've glossed the piece for the application of transfers. I'm using detail brushes alone. Not got to spraying yet. It's a fun process and if it goes wrong..... wipe it off and go again! The more layers the better. Great video. Regards Stephen.

The trouble with sound is that it doesn’t scale. The engine idling and then picking up a little as the amps come up and it starts to roll away, if you were sitting on the platform at at Shrewsbury and a forty came in ,stopped ,had a crew change then drifted off with its train, out and round the corner the engine would be there in front of you making loads of noise but that would diminish rapidly and by the end of the platform or even halfway down you wouldn’t hear it, just the boom of the empty tanks that make up its train With the model sound the distance is constant so the sound is too, so it’s not unrealistic, just doesn’t behave like you know it should. Lovely job on the spoon. At 27.30 it looks so good that I was hoping the louvres we’re going to open and shut and a big cloud of black exhaust going to pour out. I’ve driven a few of them long range tank ones. Happy days.
@EverardJunction
@EverardJunction Жыл бұрын
That's my argument with sound. In real life the train being pulled makes far more noise than the loco. The loco often can't be heard once a few wagons have passed you. Its clever and entertaining but I certainly wont be converting my fleet to sound. Glad you enjoyed it. Cheers

@@shanestephens2877 I was terrified of weathering but was building an 80s BR carriage/newspapers/parcels sidings layout so had to take the plunge. Started with dry-brushing an ebay Lima CCT, then got an airbrush and made lots of mistakes before taking the plunge and renumbering, naming and weathering a pristine Bachmann Class 47 - which was 'only' £150 brand new at the time. I'd be afraid to open the box these days, given the prices.

The brown Tamiya panel liner works good on faces for tiny scale figures. I put a few drops into the well of an aluminum pallet and thin it about 50% with thinner. I use a fine brush to put it in the details of the figure's face and hands. After it dries, I use the same fine brush with clean thinner to clean off the bridge of his nose, cheek bones, point of his chin and his fingers leaving the wash in the low spots.

Greatly done, as allways..As your loco is a "one direction" loco die to the coupling - would the exhaust grime not only go into one direction backwards and the dust in the notches, valleys, and doors collect in a very specific way as it is directed by the driving direction? A single Word to the driver's detailling - a really well proofed skin colour ist Revell 17 "Africacorp's Brown" matt and using a darker brown ink you can easily add some details to the face and the hands that make the needed deepness. Great progress thanks for the interesting footage and pictures, Christian

Hi Richard, super stuff. I always thought two liveries suited the Class 47, the BR large logo and the Intercity swallow. That was a great period when BR seemed to be getting it right. You mentioned at the end, not being convinced by sound and the way the drone of the engine gets to you after a while. I've found all sound chips I've installed, or loco's bought already fitted have the sound level set to 100%..............There really isn't any need for it to be set so high, I've altered all of mine to about 30% of their max level, and they really do sound much more realistic. Almost like you can't really hear them until they get close, then as they pass the sound fades again. Anyway all the best and thank you for the lesson in weathering Dave.

Hi Dave. I have the the sound turned right down in the few equipped locos I have. The 47 was ridiculously loud when I first got it. Even so I still find myself turning them off. The only one I leave turned on is the class 205. Running on the automated branch line keeps the sound interesting and varied. Cheers

With regard to painting the driver, you might want to look at army painter military shader. It's a "shade" coat you paint onto the figure after doing a paint job which brings out the detail. Couple of videos on you Tube. There's even a quick dip into which you obviously dip the figure. They're designed for wargames figures which have a higher level of detail but might be worth experimenting with. They also might not be "relevant" to every model railway, but with Everard being a more realistic one, from weathering/Graffiti etc, they might fit. And for £3 it's not to pricey a go.
@EverardJunction
@EverardJunction Жыл бұрын
I'll give it a try in future thanks. I've never been too bothered before as the figures end being fitted behind glass in hard to see areas. On video they look obvious as I zoom in frequently but in reality they're hardly noticeable especially when the train is running. Cheers

Nice job once again. One thing I picked up on was painting the driver. Fully agree on not trying to paint any facial features in this scale but have you ever tried a wash to lift the detail? Warhammer figure painters use a flesh wash on their figures to add depth to the faces of their gaming figures. It's very easy to apply and could help avoid that mannequin in the cab look. Looking forward to your next update.

I’d love to see a re-run of the Regional Exclusive Anglia Railways 47714, I had a couple of them over the years (one when they were brand new, sold this to raise funds for an era change to steam) and again about 3 years ago but unfortunately I had to move house and there weren’t any spaces to have a model railway unless I could afford to spend thousands on converting the loft space (which needed a LOT of work doing as it was a very old house). This being the case I had to sell my entire collection off as there was no realistic prospect of having a model railway until I could move out from my parents (we all know how difficult that is to do these days). The model of 47714 was really good for the tooling’s age, but I feel it would be much better with the new tooling.

@@EverardJunction Richard and Daniel, there's a much more pressing, immediate and obvious problem with these Bachmann locos, they're suffering from a severe case of "pricing rot"! The general consensus is that it's caused by a regrettable and widely spreading condition known as "more money than sense syndrome". Fortunately the negligent, gormless, greedy and self centred Conservative Party have through cause and effect created a ubiquitous remedy for this; it's known as trashing the country and its economy, leaving the population skint and buggered for the foreseeable future; thus relieving the "pricing rot" problem!

Please consider adding a shade wash to your figures. You go to such high levels of detail on all your vehicles and terrain, but the figures are just flat colour. I come from a tabletop wargaming background, not trains, so seeing figures in flat colour with no shading/highlighting really sticks out to me. I can't make the models you make, I couldn't do the realistic weathering you do, but I find myself watching all these railroad videos going "ooh, quick dab of Agrax Earthshade and they'd look twice as good" on the figures.

I'll give it a try in future. I've never been too bothered before as the figures end being fitted behind glass in hard to see areas. Cheers

@@EverardJunction Oh yeah, the drivers are far less noticeable. It's more the figures on the rest of the layout. I feel awkward even bringing it up, but it's the one part of *every* layout that never gets upgraded and (again, coming from a model figure painting background) they just stand out as being lacking in shading and contrast. I figure if anyone can show the model railroad community how it could be improved, it'll be you. Thanks as always for these chunky updates that are delight to watch over dinner when they drop.

@@TheHongKongHermit Yes of course, figures in full view on the layout will be treated with far more care. I don't actually have any yet but hope to add lots of them when I get around to doing the station. Cheers

I always admire the work of other model makers. We railway modellers are left far behind when it comes to figures and applying washes over detail to highlight things. I think it is because with a diorama you work in a smaller area and focus more on one thing whereas we have a huge area to look at and detail so miss a lot of the finer points .It is good to see we are catching up slowly though and experimenting more using the products made for kit builders and wargamers who always had a lot more products to choose from when it came to paints and weathering powders. KZfaq has helped me a lot I watch kit builds and have seen techniques that really give great results.

Hi, I know this is not related to this video Allan from Dragon Junction shout you had a similar problem. BachmannFGA Freightliner Wagons. I have a set that I'm about to sell/throw away as they keep derailing. How you had any issues. It looks like to me, a novice modeller that the bogie is restricted by the under frame at the rear. Any comments suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks I'm an avid watcher of your channel. Dallas

The elephant in the room is that the real loco has a gloss finish yet the model is matt finish. I hear the arguments that if you have a gloss finish the model looks plasticky but if you are going for authenticity then surely a rippled gloss finish most reflects the loco.
@EverardJunction
@EverardJunction Жыл бұрын
The model is a satin finish and has a shine to it with the right light. When you view a painted object from a distance it doesn't have a high level of gloss unless you get up close. For that reason models in the hobby are finished in Satin such as this one. The argument is that gloss doesn't scale well.

You don't get drive with stream locomotive when bought new . We have too buy both driver and fireman. They possibly added other bits instead of the driver

If i didn't know better I would swear blind the model, when running with sound, is the real thing. But i agree, running the model with sound on would quickly get tiresome.

Why don't you just brush paint the wheels and pickups? Not very visible anyway.
@EverardJunction
@EverardJunction Жыл бұрын
Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. In this case I went for the airbrush and in previous vids I've brushed them. Either way the wheels need cleaning when the model is finished.
