You are so right, I gave up the back pack years ago especially in the tropical heat. I live out of a carry on bag with a pair of shoes tied to it. When I fly I put the shoes on and there's no luggage carousel for me, I get off the plane and straight out of the airport. Take it from me folks, travel light you won't regret it

Yes indeed, great call as i learned that on my 1st trip to thailand with 2 big siutcases & no backpack. It killed me with i got off the Bangkok Airport Bus at Pattaya with the heat 100°+ & LadyBoys trying yo Hustle me, i was lost🤔almost turned back to go back home, but a Girl selling LOTTO tickets helped me & got me BY MOTOR BIKE taxi and baht bus to beach rd SOI 13/3 To my 1st Hotel 500 ft from the beach. Ive come back 7 times since with only back pack

Many governments in Western countries prefer to maintain old train terminals as iconic landmarks while expanding platforms underground. I understand that the entire project will cost a lot of money to develop.

Siam had the first train line in South East Asia but was very slow development due to political turmoil. Several new rail projects are moving forwards, these will help support tourism industry tremendously. Yes, you can see many slums along the rail lines. Very budget friendly hotel plus very convenient!

@@SideTripLife As an aside aside, I remember riding a motorbike around Siargao Island in the Phillippines. Definitely do that and post a video! I rode through some "shanty towns" or "slums" as people would call them and it took me a while to notice that despite them being wooden shacks with tin roofs they were amazingly beautiful, with well tended gardens and not a piece of litter in sight. As you say, the people were so friendly. I want to go back there, but I think I would burst into tears, because when I went a few years ago there was one propeller flight that held 50 people per day from Cebu, and a couple of years later there were flights from Manilla and overseas .. I think 7 to 9 flights a day.

I had a wonderful Thai GF who used to teach me Thai but she moved to the states for uni and job and I also had a small biz but my Thai staff all spoke English. Lousy excuses I know and I should be fluent by now but hey I'm always learning. Best to look for a basic online Thai language course for a start (or study here at the many Thai language schools) or just come here and learn the basics as you go. STL

Dang, that old station brings me back, the old store too on the side. Haven't been here for 5 years, but a few times before (Back to 2001) and I'll miss it. First time I went it was same as you, up to Chiang Mai before going all the way back down to Satun and Koh Tarutao, to sleep in tents in the park. Although we were the hot backpackers with our 40lb bags the first few times. The fancy private train going to Singapore was there and the whole experience was fantastic. It's possible to walk to the park next to Bang Sue right?

Great memories, thanks for sharing! For the record, I too was laden with a hot, sweaty, cumbersome backpack on my 1st trip. Back in the day if you rocked up to say Charlies Huts on Samui with a suitcase on wheels you'd get yucked at lol. But times have changed, no mud rd in Chaweng (sadly no Chucks Huts either): nowadays most roads are sealed/paved all over SE Asia. I was just in Indonesia, went on jungle treks, climbed a volcano etc, just left the wheels in the room and took my little day pack, sorted! But evidently it's still 'uncool' to hit a hostel with wheels, thus mostly first timers laden themselves like pack mules to 'look' er, cool... each to their o0wn, know what I prefer lol
