i love it when WoTC locks a level 4 spell behind a class that needs to be level 17 to access, i love never actually getting access to said spells again, i'll love having to beg a DM to get a magic item so the party can get a pet griffon, instead of just having the power to earn it myself at level 10!

College of Dance. 01. Dazzling foot work. -Unarmored AC - BA unarmed strike - the unarmed strike deals bard die damage 02. If an enemy ends its turn within 5 ft of you, you can take a reaction spend a BI and move up to half your speed and one ally can do so as well. Movement doesnt provoke OA. Plus free unarmed strike 03. Tandem footwork. When you roll init. You can spend and roll a BI and then add it to all allies init. 04. Evasion but can share.

College of lore 01. Magical discovery works like magic secrets. Cleric wizard and druid spell list. And can replace the choice per level up if you want. 02. Cutting words - works on creatures that are immune to charm. 03. Pureless skill - if you use a BI to add to a skill check but it fails the BI does not get expended.

@joeshellard1487 - but with dice it could be more and it could be less. - also it's not just you others can also use it. That's why there needs to be a resource attached to it. Just adding a plus 4 to all your skills and allies would be broken. No thank you.

@RulesLawyerDnD that's not the point I'm trying to make. If it only gets expended if it succeeds it takes the need to manage the resource away. This means you can just keep going until you finally succeed with no worries. Whereas before there was risk involved and you had to weigh up the probabilities. For example if it is just a basic attack and you are 4 away from the DC then it's probably not worth using because it's a 1 in 4 chance to succeed. But in a life or death situation you are more likely to take the gamble and risk using up the buff so that you don't die. By taking out the risk of losing the BI you can just throw it around as much as you like because "hey, it's only a 1 in 4 chance to succeed but that's ok because it's a 3 in 4 chance that I'll keep the bardic inspiration"

Dance is about the control, excercise and expertise of body movement and position, in our culture dance and martial arts are separate only for cultural reasons, they are naturally connected in many other cultures (many africans, many in Asia, all Oceania...) Maori dance bard, lets go. If you want some exotic dance bard ideas, just wikipedia "war dances" or "weapon dances".

I really really liked the three differentiated spell list that were early on in the testing I felt like that opened up a lot of opportunities for sub classes to be able to tap into other unified spell lists and it was a lot cleaner

College of Valor. 01. Extra attack feature. - you can cast a cantrip inplace of one attack. 02. The rest is mostly the same as before woth possible improvements from the base class 03. They can now use simple and martial weapons as spell casting focus.

01. Dedicated spell list. 02. Can change a cantrip per level up. 03. Bardic inspiration last an hour. 04. Level 2 expertise 05. Font of inspiration lets you trade spells for bardic inspiration. 06. Counter Charm is a reaction and gives advantage vs that save. 07. Level 10 magical secrets. Cant go into any spell list anymore. Bard, cleric, druid, or wizard. - you can now choose any of your prepared spells from those list when you hit ten. 08. If you have fewer than 2 BI when you roll Init. Then you will get 2 back or more. 09. Level 20 words of creation. Power word heal and kill always prepared. - also can now targer two people when they cast these spells.

Multiclassing seems to have benefited more than anything. I really appreciate how frontloaded a lot of these key features are.

College of glamor. 01. You always have charm person and mirror image prepared. - when you cast an illusion or enchantment spell you can choose someone and frighten or charm them. Limited uses per day. 02. Mantle of inspiration - increases the amount of temp HP 03. Mantle of Mag.- always have the command spell prepared 04. Allow you to burn spell slots to regain use of subclass abilities 05. Unbreakable mag. - when a creature hit you with an attack it must then make a CHA saving throw or the attack misses.

It breaks my heart how they absolutely butchered enthralling performance. I feel like I kind of understand their design goal with the change, but I'm absolutely going to ignore it. Everything else seems fine, but this is just a massive nerf that they acted like we should be excited for.

Command is one of the best possible spells for a Bard to get and you don't even need to use Magical Secrets to get it on Glamour Bard. This spell is non-concentration, upcasting it can target the entire enemy group, and it can completely disable the enemy for a turn. Oh your Hypnotic Pattern disabled 6/10 enemies on Turn 1 and is using your concentration? Well cast Command at 4th level to make the remaining 4 enemies "Beg for forgiveness" for a turn. Incredibly strong.

To be fair, bards were never limited to singing... They were masters of music and spoken word. Spoken word could mean poetry, story telling, lore, and if you want to get more creative, even something like motivational speeches or debating. And music doesn't have to be singing either, or even entertainment. You could have the bard use war horns and war drums, or something like the Aztec death whistles. Or chant shamanic incantations or prayers. People for some reason just have a much more specific default vision of what a Bard is, compared to most other classes...

@@Caiphex it’s pretty decent imo, could be earlier but now every time you enter combat you’ll always have a BI. It’s not crazy powerful but it’s still decent. But PWH & PWK at that lvl that can affect multiple people is insane

With spell slots being able to turn into inspirations one of the worst 5e subclasses, college of whispers, had become a LOT more viable. Now instead of burning through one of your FIVE uses of your core ability to do a sneak attack, you can basically do a sneak attack smite

I imagine its like the 2014 version, where they don't count against their total. So like at level 6 you could have 8 total spells and Lore bard gives you two freebies that don't count against that number. The level 10 version means that your still limited by the total amount of spells you can have, but the lore bard version will never count against your total.

@memoven4691 Still Though it is incredibly odd To get a feature that just Upon leveling, up to 10 Transitions from 2 spells Hand picked from the exclusives of other classes to simply increasing the amount of spells prepared by 2. It's not like you're going to have a particular advantage over other classes who also have extra prepared spells.

College of swords with new ability to swap out spells for bardic inspiration dice just makes it godly in terms of armour class. Pretty much always have that super high armourclass now. My son will be disappointed that he can no longer use mystical secrets though to get the paladin mount spell

I might be the only person a little bummed about the change to the Glamour Bard. I loved the fact that I could get people enamored with me by just playing music. I used this for an evil pied-piper type bard in a campaign and loved it. Limited use, yes but still strong.

The downside to that ability was that you needed to be playing music for a whole minute. Which is not efficient in combat for then having the possibility of not having a success roll on the die.

Naw dude, I hated that change too. When I DM I'll probably allow people to use either feature, and me playing a glamour bard in the future is probably contingent on me using the old version. Been pretty hyped about all the changes so far, but this one was just a stupid waste. Don't know what they were thinking.

The new changes still give you the versatility of using it out of combat. Most bards have cantrips that let's you activate the ability without having to use a spell slot, and I feel that you also get more creative freedom as to how you roleplay the ability. But hey at the end of the day is just a preference in game play 🤷🏽‍♀️

Total of 11 spells, compared to 6. At level 20, access to more level 9 spells than any other caster class, and those two extra are very nice to have. Unless a level 3 cleric casts Silence.

The bard should regain up to 2 bardic inspiration when rolling initiative, otherwise they will still feel obligated to use them all or not benefit from that ability to regain them when rolling initiative.

Everyone remember how in 3.5 they had “iconic characters” meant to represent the classes? Like Jozan the Cleric and Tordak the Fighter? I feel like the artwork in the new books is doing something similar with having like a continuous character or two for each class.

I don't think you realize how insane the flexibility of having access to the entire wizard cleric and druid spell list is for every single spell you learn. There's basically no point in having the bard spell list go past 5th level because the cleric druid and wizard between themselves have every 6th-9th level spell in the entire game. You can even swap spells around on one at a time at a long rest, and access every single spell in the game besides 30 that are mostly weapon interactions from the half casters like smites and lightning arrow.

I once Homebrewed a Dance Bard subclass I called College of Grace. It could go into a "Routine" like a Barb goes into a rage. In a Routine theyd get boosted AC and any opportunity attacks against them automatically failed. Later on they'd automatically force opportunity attacks so they'd basically be a Dex Tank, dancing across the battlefield and eating up enemy reactions.

I know it's probably weird for some to hear, but making it so you can't steel from Warlock & Half Casters is genuinely my favorite change so far. With how much they've been dunked on in this, the biggest problem in 5e was that Bard could take these spells from them way before they'd be able to use them. This was an incredibly important change for keeping the Half-Casters identities.

I'm kinda sad because there were some neat interactions that that made possible (Find Steed in particular comes to mind; your spells that target yourself can simultaneously target the steed, and being a Bard opened up a lot of options that took advantage of that). I think it'd feel less bad if it were like that already in 2014, tbh. I get it, though. Kinda like how the strongest Paladin builds tend to be two-thirds Sorcerer.

@tiltiege7842 I'd rather have both, and they were buffed from where they were in 5e. The way they did it was an incredibly clunky way that makes them less fun, but they are technically buffed from where they were before. The real problem is that, in addition to Hunter's Mark & Smite being made so clunky as a core features for them, the martials all received massive buffs & the casters didn't receive significant nerfs. Which now results with them being a still good class, but one that's less satisfying than even the actually worse classes.

I do love that they get the Starry Wisp cantrip which has an attack roll instead of a saving throw. Bard was too heavy on saving throw spells in 2014.

Our bard NEVER uses Bardic Inspiration. Instead of using spell slots to grant more, I think I'll let them use BI charges for more slots.

Its biggest initial changes in UA were related to the spell list changed (arcane, divine, primal) which they stepped back from, so the bard ends up being far similar to the 2014 version than it was originally intended to be.

I love the new magical secrets. It makes the bard very versatile but its not overpowered because its at a higher level and they're learned casters so they have limted ammount they can learn. Will miss the playtest version where you can choose from level 1 but now bards will still get arcane and healing from level 1. I do hope they expand the bard spell list well because it akways seemed the wizard spell I wanted wasn't on it. (But that gets fixed when they get magical secrets anyway) It does suck that magical initiate doesn't let access to all class spell lists though

Seems like there wouldn’t be much point to casting Power Word Kill or Power Word Heal on two creatures if you can just steal from the wizard or cleric list. Mass Heal and Meteor Swarm can accomplish the same thing in effect, but targeting even more creatures.

This is essentially the new 2014 paladin of dnd 2024...especially the valor bard who is a tiefling...searing smite plus booming blade and a 2nd attack while having spirit guardians on. Valor bard is the definitive hero class

Yeah, either that or give inspiration back until yoy have a number equal to half chr mod (rounded down) if at less than half. Then when you hit 19 and fet tgat 22 chr you can start each combat with 3 minimum.

If its same as play test 8. Bard of college of dance will get a d12 unarmed stike at level 15 but a monk gets it at level 17. Granted monk gets more attacks but still. Damn that bard is hitting strong

Can someone explain to me how they can have access to Cleric, Druid, and Wizard spells without being crazily OP? Am I missing something? Also, they keep mentioning “prepared spells” - are bards now able to do daily preparations à la cleric/druid/wizard?

Only Wizards, Clerics, Druids, and Paladins (this I don’t know why) can change spell lists every long rest. The rest can change a spell once per level up. Rangers can change a spell once per long rest. The bard’s access is just 2 spells at level 10 from any of those 3 class spell lists - bards still have their own spell list to pull most of their spells from.

@@wtchrol7864 Sorry that's wrong it's not just two anymore. They have 4 spell lists to choose from. This is from the site itself. Magical Secrets now lets you select spells from the Cleric, Druid, or Wizard spell list every time you can add to your Prepared Spell list, and have them count as Bard spells. This means that from Bard levels 10 through 20, you can choose spells from four different classes. Plus, when you replace a Bard spell from your Prepared Spell list, you can replace it with a spell from the other classes’ spell list.
