Truck bed covers come in all different shapes, sizes, qualities, and have different functionality. I've loved the Diamondback HD Cover for years for a lot of the reasons I show in this video. There is a new player in the market, Diamondback's Switchback cover - which functions more like a standard trifold tonneau cover. I decided I'll give it a go and see how it works for how I typically use my Tundra. In this video I just show the install and breeze through some features, in case it looks like a cover that might work out well for you!

Do you plan to make one that can fold up against the cab? I have an in bed fuel tank against the cab and to access the fill cap I fold my current tonneau cover against the cab.

@@supporterofsanity Currently, there aren't any talks we know of about a Switchback that folds all the way against the back glass, but you can run our HD or SE tonneau cover with an in-bed tank, depending on how tall your tank is.

I have the SE on my zr2. My favorite thing I've added to the truck. I saw the switchback being announced awhile back and was super impressed. I will probably get it for my next truck.

Really good improvement on the original design if you need a little more bed space. Been using the normal 2 panel Diamondback on my Tacoma for a few years now and it's been great. No water issues since I added a little extra weather sealing.

Wow! Now this is a cover I can get behind. It would be sweet if they made an HD version of the tri-fold with cleats and 2,000lbs capacity. It would then be the ultimate tonneau cover for maximum practicality.

I have not considered Diamondback in the past but all that changed with the Switchback cover unfortunately I had a small mishap so I put their customer service to the test I’m happy to report that DB customer service is second to none and my problem was resolved within an hour after I emailed them. If I buy another truck I’ll buy another DB. Installing the Switchback would be easier with 2 people but I did by myself, installation is straightforward like any trifold tonneau covers definitely worth the price tag no leaking issues and first class customer service

Nice review - I have a Tacoma - never had a cover...I ordered a switchback yesterday. I own a horse farm and frequently use my bed to haul things I do not want exposed to the elements...this will be nice for when it is raining. I've never been a fan of covers as they all seemed to look cheap and fade...hopefully this will be nice. I'll probably leave it folded up a lot. The folks on the phone - when ordering - were very helpful. They did say it will be about 3-4 weeks before I get it as they have a backorder now. They also gave me a 10% Military Discount (retired), that was nice.

I am so pissed I didn’t ask about something coming out. Just got a Retrax pro xr . I miss the diamond back. Not a trifold fan, but I would do a diamond back any day of the week. Thank you for reviewing. If I ever need to be replace I will be keeping an out for your follow ups. Your the reason I got my diamond back on my last truck. Have a F350 drw with 8 foot bed and good neck . diamond back would have been my preference if I could have.

I love my diamondback hd but when you spend $2200 I would like to see stainless steel washers on all points that come in contact with the aluminum so I don’t have to change them all out. I ordered 100 stainless washers for $10 from Amazon I would pay the extra couple of dollars from diamondback to have it from the factory.

This looks like just what I want. Are the rear handles adjustable? If they are, that may help with how much the seal compresses and let the tailgate open easier.

My wife & I just got matching tundras. Cute right? Actually mines a 1794 hers is a limited 😂. Anywho DB is sending us a switchback for each tundra. Can’t wait to install them. I’ll reach out. I’m a LONGTIME LLOD fan. Many many many years ago I bought a holster from you 😂

Love the quality, appearance and security of the Diamondback covers, but really wish they had an option to fold it up completely. This is close, but going to stick with the Bakflip.

I was looking at the Switchback for a Tacoma and I don’t think you can use the storage bins. I am currently here 9:02 in your video where you are taking off the HD

I'm on the fence with this and the SE. Both are the same price but it seems you get a little bit more with the SE. How has it been comparing to your HD/SE models you run on your truck?

@YoYo-gi1uu HD & SE are the same design, only change is the weight capacity. I feel that the panel clamping design of switchback may not be as strong compared to the HD & SE. I really like my HD and it’s a solid product, with the middle section that’s securely fastened down I think it adds to stability and security. (My personal opinion and interpretation of the new product)

I have HD on my 2021 RAM 2500 with RAMBOX, frankly to say, hard to use especially when I need more spaces. Considering to change to another foldable tonneau cover now.....

Can you get all the tie down cleats pre-installed around all four sides of this Switchback, and still be able to fold flat the rear two sections onto the third, and have them secured while driving, without the tie down cleats interfering in any way? I'm leaning towards the HD, but considering the Switchback. Thanks. And once again, a useful review. Good job! On a side note, I'll likely be buying an F150 Platinum in 2024, which I'll put the cover on, though I'm still trying to decide whether to get the 5.5' or 6.5' bed. Leaning toward the 5.5' bed, though I imagine I might be able to put a tent directly on top of the cover over the 6.5' bed, could be an interesting option instead of putting the tent up nearby on the ground. Then i wouldn't have to have a hard pop up mounted on a rack on top of the cover to interfere with easy access to the inside of the bed, easy and quick to put up and take down a normal tent. Even with the HD and those protrusions of the locks and hinges sticking up, lay down say a 3" thick, maybe 4" thick, piece of dense foam inside the tent and probably wouldn't even feel those while sleeping. Mmmm. And lastly, now that you've used the Switchback for a while, how do you think it compares to the HD?

I *think on the switchback that you can only put the low profile tie downs on, but I'm not sure. Their customer service team should be able to answer that - and they're pretty good!

I asked Diamondback if I purchased a cover and rack system if they would install the rails for the Yakima rack and they said NO, they don't install the rails.

This is the Smooth Black option. Both have the same textured coating, the difference is the aluminum plate itself. Rugged Black is checker-plate and Smooth Black is, well, smooth plate.

Yeah the locking mechanism/clasp can be manipulated from the inside - but not if it's properly locked.

You mention in the end of the video that your Tacoma is your dedicated Adventure Rig and that has the HD and Tent mounted permanently and that makes me wonder what the point of a $2200 Tonneau cover is when it has zero functionality with the tent always mounted. I just don't get it.

It provides secure, weatherproof storage for all my gear - not a fan of open beds for storing gear. I may try a cap or some type of shell or minimal camper eventually though

It's not good having to secure the last panel by engaging two levers vs. a single one-hand mechanism that is accessible at/near the tailgate. Cargo could interfere with access to the levers as well as engaging them. Diamondback needs to change that.

Diamond Back covers are a ripoff if you own a compact or mid-size truck. They charge the same as the full size truck covers. I saw Ford Maverick with HD Diamond Back cover. He paid 2500 dollars for his 4 ft bed. 😂

80lbs for an entire truck bed of weatherproof, secure storage. But yeah if you're not looking for weatherproof, secure storage, then a truck bed cover ain't it for you.

I love this cover but the one thing that annoys me with it is how the panels step up in height towards the tailgate. Other than that this thing is everything they said it would be.
