I head down to Berry BMW Heathrow to check out their brand new BMW X2 M35i Demonstrator. After covering where this model sits in the range and what options their particular Demo has, I take it out for a 1st drive, is the B48 going to ruin the incoming M135i...?

Great little car, had a x2 M35i for a while now and it’s pretty rapid with a quality finish inside and out. They are not the cheapest but if you get them at a good deal you can’t go wrong with one of these if your after a small SUV crossover. Pocket Rocket 😎🔥

Good review Joe. I must say I really enjoy driving my wife's 2017 F48 X1 XDrive M SPort , although it doesn't make me giggle as often as the M2. Look forward to your next full review of this X2

The xDrive from X3 M40i is exactly rear wheels biased as you said, tuned by M Performance, not only the M5. The grip, feeling and performance is superb in that car, sports car like in Sport mode and you can't believe your are in a mid-size SUV with almost 1.9 tons. The xDrive for X2 with transverse engine mount is by default mostly front wheel biased, but I don't know the setup for this M35i. There is the first ever BMW front wheels mount LSD M-Sport Differential which helps a lot with the sporty handling in curved roads. The torque of 450nm is a big figure for 2l and this power, usually similar engines from other brands have 380-400nm. Also, the gearbox seems to be a tuned Aisin with 8 speed, not ZF. X1 and X2 have the 8 speed Aisin gearbox and recently a 7 speed DCT for some engines.

I hope they do a 40i version for the new 1 series the B48 isn't bad but lacks low down torque and the power tails off at around 6k (from my Mini JCW experiences)

Great drive review - love the X2 and finally some oomph over 20i or diesel - bronze gold metallic popular at launch suits shape better than white - and perhaps a neutral interior just not black :)

Same power as the 335i from 2009 but whatever. 4-cyl, boo, hiss, etc. There's always a tatty, second-hand six that drinks petrol, smokes like a chimney and eats the cam bearings at the back of the block you can buy for buttons, and say you have a six-cylinder BMW :)

i really love the styling of the X2. but i think they need to make a real "M" version of this car to compete with the likes of Porsche Macan turbo or the Mercedes GLA 45 AMG . so really hope they would improve on that maybe in 2021 and add the Xdrive like they currently have on the M5 Comp. great review as always

Probably because it's in the lower end. X1 and X2 are still F-series. X3+ were upgraded to G series starting with 2018

A guy @ my dealership told me BMW has decided to reserve the 40i name plate for 6 cylinder cars. Since the new 1 series won't be able to fit a 6 cylinder engine (not enough space on the front-wheel drive platform) there, don't expect there to be an M140i.

I read that's a tuned 8 speed Aisin gearbox. I think Joe is wrong with the ZF on this car, there is no ZF gearboxes on BMWs for transverse mount engines.

Gearbox is not ZF. It is Aisin, as it is with all BMW with transversal engine placement.

@@alexanderrothner4819 Not your range, mercedes calls all of their range AMG except the 200s. 35 AMG 45 AMG 43 AMG 53 AMG 63 AMG it used to be 320, 350, 500 etc, now every thing is supposed to be "AMG". That is stupid.

Sounds better than a golf R at least. A lot of money for that car ouch. I think you might be right with your 35i and 40i prediction. I just fear the m140i is going to lose its performance bargain price tag here. Previously a 6 clylider with the b58 in it was under 30k. You will probably pay that for the new one with 4 cylinders and less power. And they will charge 40k+ for the proper one. I hope im wrong.

For people who aren’t sure why it’s a 4 cylinder, please remember that emissions laws are getting more and more strict and therefore you will notice almost, if not every, manufacturer is now releasing or planning on releasing most of their vehicles with a 4 cylinder variant as opposed to 6 cyl.

Great review. Started following since LLF. I've got the B48 in my 1 series ATM. Just under 200 horses and it feels like it has lots more to give. So it's clearly safe to remap of it's pushing out 300 on this platform?

Hello, I have a selection in one bazaar X2 M35i 2022 with adaptive suspension, I heard that with sports suspension is too hard for longer rides, I was discouraged by many from the m35i due to the harshness of the chassis, my question is if this model with adaptive chassis (0223 Adaptives Fahrwerk) is acceptable for normal driving for comfort? Thank You very much for answer.

The FWD-based BMW:s doesn't have the ZF-box, but good it feel as nice! They have the AISIN GA8G45-box. Same as Volvo XC40 and others.

Can not understand why the Mini JCW's engine left the factory with just 230ish bhp with a B48 engine my Mini Cooper S 2015 only 189 bhp B48 seems a capable engine,also in the 2.0L Toyota Supra.

Sounds pretty impressive for a 4cyl... but still can’t get over the disappointment that the new 1 series is gonna be a FWD base... just looking at the spy shots one can’t help but feel that its lost its proportions and it’s USP with rear wheel drive gone and the 6Cyl

All of the fear about the FWD implementation with the xDrive variants is unfounded. I've had my xDrive F48 for about as long as your comment is old and I'm watching this video because I'm heavily considering getting the new X1 (U11) in the M35i variant, and I wanted some insight as to what it might be like. Like Joe said, the xDrive, even if FWD biased, really does make it feel quite neutral, which only makes doing those pull outs and turns feel all the more secure. I've had my fun getting the back end loose in my old E30s, and maybe there is room for that one day when I decide to step into a full M car, but dammit, I do love the fun I've had with the F48 and can only imagine what nearly 100 extra horses will do. $60k for a fully loaded, brand new car, that can put a smile on my face feels like a (privileged) bargain. And yeah... BMW knocked it out of the park with the sound signature of their 4 cylinders. My dad thought my X1 was an I6.

Mark Earley Why do you compare a cayman to this? The cars couldn’t be more different, and with a Porsche the moment you click the configure button the price doubles. This X2 is overpriced but you have to consider that with BMWs you can get 10-20% off with just a bit of negotiation. A friend of mine even managed to get a 30% discount on a brand new 1 series.

Joe, how does it stand on you M2 with it being financed and modifying it? Are they bothered? Need to know as I have an X3M40i I want to mod, but don’t want the finance company to ask for the car back. I plan to sell it at the end so they shouldn’t really be bothered. Cheers
