I am 50, but grew up with BSA's in Australia because of my dad. I am a staunch Beezer guy, and owned a few. This thing is absolutely bang on. It's pretty , its going to be reliable and I am getting one . I expect the price bracket is going to be close or just under the Royal Enfield twin, and I can live with that. Redline have done a top job, it seems they get it...many wouldn't. Like Alan's style , bet he's an interesting guy to have a beer with. My Goldie will be getting a set of Ace drop bars. Well done.

Hello youngster! I am nearly 70 and like you, grew up with BSA's, Enfields, Nortons etc. This new BSA doesn't look too bad apart from the bars (Ace drops essential) and the HUGE radiator. I know this is probably due to Euro 5, 6 or 19 (everchanging these days) but a smaller oil cooler would have looked so much better. Anyway it is what it is, still bears a good resemblance to a real bike, a riders bike and not one loaded with electronic aids that rarely get used. Ride safe, all the best.

What is astonishing is that comment after comment dwells on the bike's appearance alone. The engine could be hiding a Briggs & Stratton lawnmower unit and apparently those commenting would not notice.

From everything I’ve seen and read the bike is a very faithful styling and engineering exercise to the original. The bonus being it’s a lot more civilised to ride. The key thing now is to find out from reviews as to what it’s like to ride.

I’m in love with the BSA and hopefully it is lower priced then the new Nortons and Triumphs and comes to the Netherlands and the rest of the world to make people glad who love British Motorcycles. By the way:There is a classic Triumph (England1978)and a retro Royal Enfield(India2012)in my garage but I’m very delighted with both!
@geraldscott4302

I have a 2013 Royal Enfield B5 Bullet, with an aftermarket exhaust and converted from EFI to an Amal carburetor using a kit from Hitchcocks in the UK. It runs and sounds great, but I don't get too far from home with it. Since it has tube type tires, I stay within the towing range of my road service plan.
@hubdormans5709
@hubdormans5709 2 жыл бұрын
@@geraldscott4302, thanks for your reaction!My RE is a classic 500,and I have an aftermarket exhaust too and opener air filter than stock but still the original EFI. The new BSA is probably a lot faster than our bikes:45hp or even 56hp? It has 153cc more capacity in one single cilinder and the compression is 11.5:1 instead 8.5:1. I’m very interested in the smoothness of the BSA at low rpm! They claim a high torque from 1800rpm! That sounds good but the most big singles are not smooth rideable beneath 2500/3000 rpm! That’s why I decided for the Royal Enfield who runs more like a B33 or another mild tuned single. The best solution for the BSA would be a heavy flywheel mass or better variable to get a smooth bike at low revs and lighter above 3000/3500 rpm. But I’m 67 now and enjoy touring a basic old school motorcycle. About tube tyre,the chance on a flat tyre is not bigger than tubeless in mine opinion,only a risk of blowout. Kind greetings from Holland!
@geraldscott4302
@geraldscott4302 2 жыл бұрын
@@hubdormans5709 I was unable to get mine to run right with the EFI, it was way too lean. I was told on the Classic Motorworks forum that the only way to solve that problem was a $500 electronic tuner. I'm 62, and not very fond of electronics, so I went with the carb conversion, which cost about $350 total including the carb. Absolutely amazing difference. It really brought the engine to life. I have found a significant difference between tube type tires (I also ride a dual sport bike) and tubeless tires. Several times I have found objects sticking in my tubeless tires while inspecting them at home that had actually punctured the tire. The object that punctured the tire has also plugged the puncture. A tubeless tire is also thick enough to allow sealers like Ride-On to work on all but huge punctures. But if a tube gets punctured, even with something as small as a needle, it is going flat. And it is not easy to fix a flat with tube type tires out in the middle of nowhere, or beside a busy highway. I have been stranded several times because of tube type tires, but never with a tubeless tire. Even if they go flat, you can just put a plug in them and air them back up.
@hubdormans5709
@hubdormans5709 2 жыл бұрын
@@geraldscott4302,thanks for sharing your experience!You have more experience with a flat tyre on a motorcycle then me. I didn’t know that a tubeless tyre a thicker wall had then a tube type. About the carburetor conversion:If I ever get problems with the EFI I follow your advice and do the same! It’s original,simple,(no need for a fuel pump!) The only question I have:Was the cold/warm start better on the EFI?(Mine does perfectly both,even with the kickstart)Greetings!

As an artist with a lower class-Imean lower _case_ "a", I appreciate the problems and I think this is one of those bikes that make you look good. I often think what a great ride the '74 Norton was, even with the old tires back then - but that was part of the composition that was the beauty, or am I wrong, Socrates? In my ideal world, Norton would put wider modern tires on 20" chrome steel 5" wide spoked wheels, (I know there is no such tire size in this imperfect world) and do a 1100 cc 2 cyl aircooled motor with a 4 speed gearbox shifting on the left, 4 down and 4 up, electric start, 400 lbs wet, adjustable points ignition, and the same size frame, in aluminium. More suspension travel would be nice; no need for a center stand. Nevermind, I have my memories, and there are a few around, may be one of them will be my next bike. Still, this goldstar is tempting.

You’re one of the few. I’ve described it as cynical marketing and been roasted for it. I get some of these retro’s: The RE because it’s essentially unchanged wind genuine; the Triumph Boneville because it’s a competent take on an old bike with far more performance; the Kawasaki 900RS because it’s a styling exercise on a thoroughly modern bike, but not this one. If they had made a 100hp single weighing 150Kg with some styling cues then that would have been something. Anyway, I’m sure it will sell in droves regardless of what I think of it and that’s perhaps the acid test of taste or gullibility .

Agreed about the pastiches, but I like a simple looking motorcycle, and think they could do better trying the Mini, Mustang approach, that is make it more of an evolution of an earlier design rather than trying to copy an old design, because, partly due to modern regulations, they never get it right. The Husqvarna Vitpilen, is an example of what should be done, modern but simple.

This is not just based on being a stick-in-the-mud, although I am one, there are practical reasons for these. Not a fault of the BSA but I'm sure that manufacturers could have designed ambidextrous gearboxes and I don't mean the clumsy external linkages that RE tried a few years ago. I've ridden bikes with gear shift on the right and on the left. The right side is much better IMHO, especially if you use a sidecar in a country which drives on the left.

The DBD34 motor wasn't a pre-unit, the motor was never available in unit construction format, so the DBD34 motor can be described as non-unit.

@Trevor Wood afraid so, after market parts have just been banned too, and watch the MOT emission standards increase. Game over

It will be good wont it, no new petrol bikes or cars, authoritarian regimes exploiting the poor and powerless and managing the extraction of precious metals for the batteries and support structures. In places like Australia where I am, we have hundreds of klms between towns and while electric charging stations are popping up on main routes this will not be of much use to the farmers and those regional dwellers, or the multitude of travellers, from Brit backpackers to the grey nomads , it’s a big big place. It’s time we spent some money on research into synthetic fuel / eco petrol etc so we can continue to use our old bikes and cars because we certainly won’t be able to afford the ones they ( fascist mongrels) want us to buy. Here they are charging per kilometre for EVs instead of paying tax at the pump. Rock and a hard place. Apparently BSA have EV plans as well.

Why can they never design the rear end properly?? Looks like something heavy has been dropped in the arse end! Number plates look like bill boards and way too low down. Needs a tail tidy to make it look sensible!

Pre unit BSA engines. That bloody secondary chain that connected the engine to the gearbox. What a pain. As the pieces moved, the chain tension was always changing. Had to check the bolts every few days etc....

Nice bike, but the cylinder head on the R/H side doesnt look right at all . The old Mini rad seems to look out of place too. Please dont go anywhere near a lathe with that hair either ......

The way the down pipe angles back is a gorgeous and distinctive feature of the original, and they've got it wrong here, ruins the whole thing for me. Yeah, I wondered what happened to those old 'hair band' guys from the '80's, guess this one got into motorcycle design.

The lines are wonky. The fins don't line up with the tank, but the rear frame rails slope away in the opposite direction, it makes the side panels look skewed., wouldn't take much to fix, but needs sorting.

Had a xt500 for a while loads of power small looking light weight engine which was the Japanese bring out big single very well engineered used to kick back and try to break my ankle getting it just a bit wrong on kick start , to me this new repro BSA engine single looks unnecessary big for 650cc with today's engineering machinery a bit of a cart horse look
