New Caledonia: What is behind the deadly unrest in the French Pacific territory? | DW News

A state of emergency has been declared in the French pacific territory of New Caledonia in an attempt to quell unrest that has left five people dead, including two police officers. Plans over new voting rules from French lawmakers prompted the latest violence.
The former French colony became an overseas territory after World War two. It has rejected independence in referendums three times, but the cause retains strong support among the indigenous Kanak people.

No, the reason why is because France had just done a vaccine rollout, and they did their overseas departments (New Caledonia, French Guinea, Tahiti etc) BEFORE Metropolitan France because the government knew that the locals there needed the vaccines more. This made the French government hugely popular for a moment of time with the people of New Caledonia and the independence parties knew this, which is why they chose not to vote knowing they would lose in a landslide, and decided to save face by boycotting. The excuse of “COVID really effected us Kanaks and our burials!” Is a fabricated lie.

Caledonia is the Kanak natives' country, all other non-Kanak immigrants were brought in by the French colonist, they are not qualified for Caledonia independence referendum which only the natives are qualified for.The France-brought-in immigrant population is bigger than Kanak population, given their votes in the referendum of course they vote against independence. Approving non-Kanak native immigrants to vote is the French colonist's plot to fail Caledonia independence referendum.

Kanaks represent 39% of the population of New Caledonia and their population increases compared to other communities. The Kanak people enjoy wide autonomy and run many territorial institutions. What to say in comparison to the situation in Australia or New Zealand, where the native populations were exterminated (3% of the Australian population) (15% of the New Zealand population) and where their autonomy is marginal. They could also talk about the fate of the native populations of North or South America and their degree of autonomy. Anti-French criticism is based on prejudice...look in your own country at the fate of minorities before criticizing others.

That is no excuse to continue the subjugation and exploitation of the Kanak people, which is also in violation of the UN Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and People. Kanaks voted 100 % for independence, the fact that the French colonizers want to continue the exploitation is completely irrelevant to the rights of the Kanak people according to international law and UN Charter. As Nelson Mandela said “only through hardship, sacrifice and militant action can freedom be won” and the Kanak people deserve freedom.

There are only 200 thousand in that archipelago. If you are one of those natives you dont want the voting rights to change either, because the moment you the voters make up will change, do you think you will have a voice in paris. The indigenous are the majority on the northeast side of the island, and French are the majority on the southwest side of the island, right? Then split the island in two. Draw a line through the middle, the southwest side stays French, and the northeast side becomes independent. People who would rather live on the other side of the island can move. There, problem solved. In the American Revolution, a lot of people were loyalists. When the revolution ended and the patriots won, the loyalists didn't leave North America, they just moved to Canada. The emigration of loyalists during the American Revolution is why Canada and the United States are different countries, and why the majority of Canadians speak English instead of French today. We don't have to get real creative here, all we have to do is look to history for solutions that have worked in other times and places. This ain't rocket surgery, people.
