As a sports car EV, this thing is far more compelling to me than any of its competitors, if you could even say it has competitors. No one is offering an EV with an emphasis on handling characteristics rn.

I like the approach that Caterham made to EVs. It provides a simple and elegant solution to petrolheads. It proves that you don't need obnoxious screens and ridiculous infotainment systems to make a better vehicle.

Agreed! And it's extremely attractive. I wouldn't buy a Tesla just for the fact of how boring they look (to me) no turn back look when you walk away after parking.

Yes, this is the approach I would want if I was interested in an EV, but I am not yet. I love the full, immersive driving experience. For me that means a light weight car (check here) but also a manual transmission and the sounds of an ICE. Maybe if they offer it with a manual, I'd consider one but that isn't necessary nor practicle with electric cars so no likely to happen on a production EV.

I like the fact that it still has turn signal stalks rather and not the obnoxious screen of a Tesla. Friend has a Mach-E and it too has a large and intrusive screen, this looks a lot more like the one in my Chevy Bolt which is just the right size, IMHO. However, I’m unlikely to shell out the $$ for a Caterham, even if they produce a RHD version for North America. Still, hope it sells well for them and allows them to remain viable into the future.

@@neofaktion I truly don't care for 8/10th spirited driving. I love a V8 for highway pulls and cruising where you get time to enjoy the sound. But not a thing when it comes to canyon carving and try to not drive off a cliff.

The front seems to share design cues from the Rimac + Maserati MC20 The side profile from an oblique view is strikingly Aston Martin The rear...well,I'd consider taking it as the most unique part But I know if one rolled by my in person I'd be turning my head for sure

The last time Caterham moved away from the 7 concept was to produce the 21 and that was a bit of a disaster. Less than 50 made and costed more than the Lotus Elise, it's then rival. Hope this meets with more success.

If just anyone can make an EV sports car these days (seems like a new one is popping up every week), then straight up, this one isn't cheap enough. Someone else will make a cheaper one, and yet another an even cheaper one, and Caterham will be in trouble anyway, because it seems the barrier to entry in building an EV is getting lower every day. Chris Harris said it perfectly, buying an EV today is like buying a laptop in the '90's; as soon as you get it, there's a better and cheaper one that drops. An EV is definitely in my future, but not in my present.

Moore’s law is definitely applicable to EVs in certain ways. But it still doesn’t account for what makes an EV a car rather than an electronic device. I can’t explain it except to present the current situation: This is the only EV so far to make an attempt at a real sports car and not just some 0-60 demon. No other EV manufacturer is even close to understanding the qualities that makes a Miata, a Cayman, or an Emira great. Most of them think it’s about the powertrain, and they're completely missing the point. Like you, an EV is probably in my future but not any time soon. Not until EVs become more like cars and less like appliances.

Caterham might be unbeatable in the cost and weight department though, by anyone this side of Ariel. No-one else's customers are prepared to do with as little stuff as a Caterham customer. I expect Caterham can come out with an electric 7 as well, for people for whom this car is just to luxurious and fancy, with its roofs and door handles and what not.

OK: the wheels look right, but from an engineering perspective I think they're too big. They could be a LOT smaller and still fit the brakes. I also feel the fat fenders look beautiful but again, there's no REAL reason to make the car much wider than the passenger cell. (Or, make the passenger cell much narrower than the door.) If the car has to be that wide for handling porpoises, fair enough, spread the cabin out too.

Looks tremendous, but like all electric cars, it's not zero emissions. Just because they're not coming from the car, there are still emissions created from the powering of it, which wouldn't be there otherwise.

Although I'm for MG Cyberster but I still love this Caterham Project V and even wish for this to make to production. I'm sure you can get away with a 30kw/h battery as long as the car is light. Lightness can make driving range longer. The more electric roadster, the merrier. A low 1 ton car is the main attraction compare to many EVs. For that this car is also a wanted EV.

I have a 1700 crossflow 7 and have had it for over twenty five years. It will see me out without spending a fortune on an electic car. Everyone should have a Caterham once in there life and I wish them luck. All you need is a second car for transport, mine is a Hyundai.

The weight you are citing is without the battery. See the interview that Caterham's designer and its chief engineer did with Carwow for the true weight, which is over 1800kg. Nevertheless, still love the car.

That's greatly underpowered compared to their 420R I'm probably a lot more expensive. Need to has any storage so they're both fun track toys and backroad animals . Question is how long does the battery last.

That's a stated 137 Wh/km which is not very low but 1,19 tons is good but an Alpine A110 is lighter (we'll see in some time the EV version)

Such a beautiful car with so much potential. I wish it was a petrol car though tbh. Because the noise is part of the diving experience & an ev won't do that no matter how hard you try. Plus that range is useless especially since this is driver focused car & you'll be driving most likely faster more often, which means you'll never be gettinf that range. £80k is also too expensive tbh. This would be good for £40k-£60k. I hope Caterham comsiders making a petrol version

Eww hell no that even the supercharged version of Toyota 2ZZ will feel Anemic compared these relatively low EV specs. Similar horsepower but Less Torque over entire rev range.

270 is not a bad output if you stay away from the horsepower wars. Tbh I don’t think that this would be the fastest version. I’d be disappointed if there wasn’t a “420r” variant in the works after the initial release

I'm sure it's an amazing machine...but I can't imagine enjoying a drive on the favorite B roads many times without the engagement of a clutch and stick and rise and fall of the engine wail. The irony of this last comment isn't lost on me, but I think EVs are for the crowd who likes to flip thru shorts and not actually do anything.

Imitation is the pinnacle of flattery and in that regard, Jaguar is deserving or the praise that its lauded with by the industry in general. The Maserati MC20 and Ferrari Portifino with their hints of the F Type in their DNA and now this, which if by design or serendipity, could not more be a C-X75 sans the badge.
