During the war, more than 16 million Americans served in the United States Armed Forces, with more than 405,000 killed in combat and more than 671,000 wounded. There were also more than 130,000 American prisoners of war, of whom 116,000 returned home after the war. [4] President Roosevelt's top civilian advisers included Secretary of War Henry L. Stimson, who mobilized as the country's industries and induction centers to supply the Army, commanded by General George Marshall and the Army Air Forces under the regiment of Henry H Arnold. The Navy, led by Naval Secretary Frank Knox and Admiral Ernest King, is becoming more autonomous. The overall priorities were constituted by Roosevelt and the General Staff, being chaired by William D. Leahy. The main priority of the confrontation would be the defeat of Germany in the European continent, however, due to the attacks of Japan that caused the sinking of the main US naval fleet, the American attention to the Japanese became urgent.
