The maximum grade for a ramp under the ADA is 8.33% (1:12). However since Disney is already investing significant resources into the park in this area, modifying the bridge could fall under Disney's "Ongoing obligation to remove barriers." Disney being in California involves the CBC, which is much more strict than the ADA. I haven't looked at the bridge in a while to eyeball if its over 8.33%, but it probably is. The fix they are employing may not require permits, or if there is another accessible route to that part of the park, the bridge does not need to be changed as long as signage is provided.

@@DrMacintosh excellent information. I was surprised in my research how confusing all of this is and how many variables change the rules of what needs to be adjusted and what doesn’t. I used a level to have some information for folks like you watching and was shocked when I got the 26° incline reading by the Mansion
@DrMacintosh

@@HeyBrickey Typically in accessibility, one would use a 2 foot level to find the slope in percent (rise/run). Obviously you can't bring that into the park as a guest. Unfortunately I don't have the info to do the math, but I'm going to assume the bridge is non-compliant.

Tomorrowland has definitely turned into Forgotten Yesterdayland. Tron is pretty futuristic, but the rest of it is so desperately tired and outdated. Star Tours and Space Mountain need a refurbishment, Buzz Lightyear is worn out outdated tech, and Autopia hasn't appreciably changed since I was a kid (which is an embarrassingly long time ago). And then there's the sad, crumbling corpse of the Peoplemover. Frankly, they need to wall off that whole end of the park and redo it from ground up... though given their track record, it'd take them a decade to finish it.

I feel like they’ve been working on grading and traffic flow building up to this for years (thanks @freshbaked for the construction updates). They started with the stump of the treehouse, they leveled all the steps near pirates, and now they’ve gotten to the spot where they need to join it with TBA. As a wheelchair user, I appreciate it, plus with what you’ve said about the connections to Disneyland Forward, it sounds like it will be needed.

My problem with the Splash Mountain bridge has always been traffic flow. People coming from NOS to CC to ride Splash want to be on their left. People coming from CC to NOS to ride HM want to be on their right. This puts both lanes of traffic on the same side of the bridge which leaves a vast amount of the bridge unused, even though it's a really wide bridge. While the Harbor Galley bridge would achieve the traffic flow that would be preferable, it's too far out of the way and too small to actually serve that purpose. One thing I forgot to mention is that crossing of traffic happens right at the HM exit. With the new gift shop they're putting at that location, they really need to do something to direct/alleviate traffic at that location specifically.

It wasn't until I went there with my friend, back in my late teens, who had to use a wheelchair, that I noticed the grade. I hope they do something to make it easier for those who aren't able to walk as easily as I do. Even making something that is easier for kids who can walk, but don't use a stroller anymore, would be helpful too. Brickey, as I was watching this video I was reminded at how I don't like change. I don't want Disney to change from what I grew up with because that was a safe place and change with something familiar can be scary. However, watching your channel has done a great service for my imagination and for pushing me into thinking about the possibilities of what could be. For as much as I don't like change, there was never a Star Wars area growing up and if they never changed the park I would never have been able to experience Star Wars in such an immersive way. So, while change can be scary, it's necessary for growth and for allowing wonderful new and amazing possibilities. Thank you for continuing to challenge that part of my thinking and for reminding my imagination to stretch.

@Hey Brickey, I had a conversation with Tony Baxter when I worked at the park back in the early 90's, he stated the reason for the bridge was due to needing to build a structure strong enough to allow access for the weight of the maintenance, delivery, and trash removal vehicles for the area between River Belle Terrace and Stage Door Cafe. If you look at photos of the original model for Splash Moutain back in the 80's there was a significantly larger view of the briar patch pond. This had to be reduced to allow for the engineering of the bridge AND why the drop for Disneyland's version of the attraction ended up being significantly steeper. They literally had to wedge the prefabricated drop for the attraction into the already built mountain; due to an error in communication between the contractor building the mountain, and the ride manufacturer, not reading the specifications and blue prints correctly.

I had no idea how sloping Disneyland was until my adult son broke his foot and we had to rent a wheelchair. There are some really steep areas in Disneyland which you really don't notice when you are walking. After all, whose paying attention to sloping walkways when you are surrounded by the sights and sounds of Disneyland! He lasted two days and we got him a motorized scooter. However, what was really cool was going UP the elevator in the Haunted Mansion to get out. That's how people in wheelchairs leave the ride. They go back up the "shrinking" elevator. Being a huge Haunted Mansion fan, that was amazing!

Permits were filed by Disneyland a few months ago. These permits are to upgrade said bridge to meet current codes. The bridge must be brought up to code. On the same permit application, several structure upgrades are needed to the current mountain, also to bring it up to code. That's all, and this is hardly worth a show, really. Good fun anyway.

New Orleans Square is also 3-stories “up” above grade. While I get some people has issues with these grades, it also what makes Disneyland feel more like a “park” and the grades give visual interest. Certainly more so than even Magic Kingdom. And now that the new exit shop will be at Haunted Mansion I do not see how they could change the grade on that side, and the Critter Country side need to mead down to the entrances of Tiana’s, Pooh and the boardwalk going past the lower level of Hungry Bear (where there are also restrooms). I’m not sure much can be done. Moving on from there - If….a huge, massive if…. Critter Country leads to that new extension it would have to be totally re-done, shops taken out and so on. I have my doubts that will be the route.

@FunAtDisney

Bricky, while it is a possibility that the Critter Country area may one day be the “road” to the expansion, there is no way they are tearing down that bridge and rebuilding at this point (and the grade is there because it goes over the flume). That would take a year at least and by now there would have been permits filed that someone should have picked up on. Also, when water started to flow back into Tiana’s at MK I think t was about 3 months (or less) before the previews started to happen. So if Disneyland is on the same construction time frame that would put Tiana’s opening perhaps by end of September, maybe sooner. Also there is a similar grade in front for Pirates on that bridge, or if you go down by Riverbelle Terrace.
