Life in Laos - The life of a bicycle world traveler stranded in Laos & everyday life in Laos
The new rail link from China (Kunming) to Vientiane, Laos was officially inaugurated on December 3rd 2021. It’s the first fast train in Laos’s history - called "Lane Xang Train", named after the former Lane Xang (Million Elephants) Kingdom. The railway section in Laos runs from Boten via Luang Namtha, Oudomxay, Luang Prabang, Vang Vieng to the capital Vientiane.
The day after the opening, I wanted to take the opportunity to go on a weekend trip to Vang Vieng with my buddy Jaypee. So we packed our bags, loaded them on our bicycles, cycled the dusty road to Luang Prabang train station and started our journey.
Well, unfortunately our travel plan didn't work out the way as we wanted ...

This was very interesting. Your perplexed look has been matched by coverage from others. No online booking and information, lack of restrooms at the stations outside before you can get in. Hotwater dispensed *only* at stations and on board the train. Virtually no staff on board, etcetera. Seems it needs time to settle down.

The Chinese engineers built exactly all the same electrified railway system in Laos. But it's much more difficult than the project in China. Because there are so many mountains and rivers in Laos, and they have to dig tunnels and build bridges.

The maglev train operated in Shanghai since 2003 was also German technologies, but even in Germany until now, there is NO maglev train under operation. The train used in Laos is the same as the high speed train in China, which is similar to the ICE in Germany. But one of the differences is no one has the need to carry bicycles on board therefore no specialized carriage for them, only passengers with normal luggage. For those who want to ride bicycles in combination with train it's very easy to get these ride sharing bikes, they are everywhere in China. But for Laos buses/subways as connection to the city is better.

Well, we had the need to carry our bicycles and I'm quite sure there'll be more people in the future with the same need. I don't think that you've to be specialized to carry them. I think a bicycle is also just luggage like any other item. And in fact, now I found out that you can take a bicycle on the train if you put it in a box or bicycle transportation bag. Like on an airplane. Unfortunately there are no shared bicycle stations in Laos.

@@derekwampum8861 Why not? The CRH in China runs at a top speed of 350km/h. It takes the fastest option about 4.5 hours to go from Beijing to Shanghai (1300km), which means the real world speed is about 290KM/h. The ICE in Germany runs at top speed of 300km/h. It takes the fastest option about 4.5 hours to go from Berlin to Munich (580km), which means the real world speed is about 130KM/h. The train in Laos the same as CRH train in China. But it is running on tracks designed with top speed of 160KM/H, which makes sense for Laos as the first step.

@@ChrisFritze Do you mean a bag like the Thule carrying case? It costs several hundred euros and do you think it makes sense for normal people in Laos? Plus, I have used this bag before and I can think of at least two practical problems: 1. its designed for sport bikes with quick release wheels as you have to take off the front wheel to fix into the bag. Do Lao people ride fancy sport bikes with quick release? Any bigger attachment such as a basket will also not work. 2. Once you arrive at destination. Take the bike out of the bag ready to start riding, where do you put the big bulky bag?

So, how far away is the “Freedom bridge” from the station? Do you know if Thai trains come to the station in Vientiane so passengers not have to use taxi and shit to get to the other side?
@ChrisFritze
@ChrisFritze 2 жыл бұрын
The Friendship Bridge is about 25 kilometers away from the train station. There are no Thai trains coming to the new train station yet. It's not linked to the Thai train network yet but according to the news that will be the next step.

No, they knew that I wanted to go to Vang Vieng but due to a Covid situation they told me that I wasn't allowed to get off the train there. So instead they offered me a ticket to Vientiane without any extra charges.

As a Chinese, when I know you bought a ticket for your bicycle, I just wonder how could you past through the security check, and I am happy for you getting the compensation and upgrading lol. Actually, you can also get off at Vang Vieng, if the Vang Vieng station is a middle station between the origin station and destination station of your ticket. Enjoy the trip and welcome to China after the COVID-19.

Hi Shen! Yes, usually you can get off the train in Vang Vieng. Only that day we were told by the service staff that it wasn't allowed due to a Covid situation in Vang Vieng. I'm also happy that everything worked out well in the end.

May I ask, is there a direct train from Beijing to Vientiane? I’ll arrive to Beijing with Trans Mongolian Railway.
@shenzou4778
@shenzou4778 2 жыл бұрын
@@chukwow5738 Currently, due to COVID-19, there is no direct passenger train from Beijing to Vientiane, and only the freight trains between the two countries are in operation. So, if you want to travel from Beijing to Vientiane by train, you need to take the high-speed train or ordinary train from Beijing to Kumming, and then take the high-speed train from Kunming Station to Mohan Station, Mohan Station is the China border station of the China-Laos Railway. Then go through customs in Mohan to Laos. Before you decide to go on this way of travel, you may need to confirm that the border between China and Laos is open。 Maybe after the end of COVID-19, there will be cross-border passenger trains.

@@shenzou4778 Thank you so much for your reply. Yeah, the C-19 situation is really a pain in the but. My plan is to go by train from Sweden to Thailand. The original route was thru Cambodia, but now I found out about this and I’m very thrilled:) Hopefully I can go next year
