We continue our trip along the Pacific coast of New Zealand's South Island. In this section we leave Lake Grassmere and head for Kaikoura, passing pleasant rolling hills before skirting the Pacific Coastline, at times the sea seems to come right up to the train. We thread our way through a succession of tunnels, never far from the rocky coastline and empty beaches on one side and the Kaikoura mountain range on the other.

How this trip brings back good memories when as working 18 & 19 year old's early 60's 3 of us would catch The Cabbage Train from Blenheim to Christchurch Never ever bothered with owning cars - we had good reliable trains/Newmans Buses to take us- spend long week-ends staying at Addington Show Grounds (small cabins to sleep in) go to the City Square where there were Dances off the square / go to Movies, have a good time and then catch a Bus to Addington. Our Lives back then were so good - never had problems, get back to Blenheim early Monday am, straight to work ahh that was the life INDEED.

Life is way more complicated today, I'm sitting at my computer dealing with all the Emails, to pay bills, give meter readings, receive invoices etc, trying to work out what is an insurance renewal document and what is just another advert. It was easier when the postie delivered a couple of letters and we either binned them or responded with a return letter. Your description of life in the past makes interesting reading, how many of the things you did then, could a youngster do today, no cabbage train to get them back for work on Monday. I guess when we say "the good old days" we really mean the days when life was simpler and we had more time to enjoy it. Mobile phones are the worst thing ever, I leave mine at home on purpose because I don't want my day interrupted. Thanks for sharing your memories. Cheers. Tim.

Hi Rob, hopefully I will publish Part 3 in the next week or so, the road and rail part company for much of the route along this stretch of coastline, as there is only room for the railway between the high cliffs and the sea. From the drivers cab you get a real perspective of just how hard it must have been to construct the line......Cheers....Tim.

Hi, this is a fascinating railway offering a unique close up view of the sea-shore. For a while I thought the line was going to be abandoned after an Earthquake caused large sections on the mountain to collapse across the road and railway. After almost two years spent rebuilding the formation, it has now re-opened.

Hi Joe, there are not many railway lines from which you can see the surfers on the ocean so clearly, this is a really wonderful trip, but for the moment the line is closed as a through route because it suffered serious damage from a massive earth quake a year ago. The line is being repaired and should be open again by Christmas. I am planning on visiting again next year to ride the re-opened line and see the extent of the repairs. It is good to know you like the way I put the video together, for me a train ride is more than seeing just the line ahead, I love to look around and enjoy the scenery, it doesn't get much better than New Zealand, even on a rainy day. Thank you for your comment, it is really appreciated. Tim.

Tim !!! An awesome track through phenomenal country. Thanks for this. I only wish I'd managed to get to NZ !! It took me a while to adjust to the repeat angles and side shots but it grew on me as (I'm a regular rail video watcher.) I've often wanted to see off to the sides. Those diesels sound phenomenal ! I noticed a couple of sheep managed to breach the fence and get trapped on the rail reserve. Did they get hit ? Also, it must be very interesting on certain parts of the coastal track when it's high tide and a heavy storm !
@Timsvideochannel1
@Timsvideochannel1 10 жыл бұрын
Hi, thank you for commenting, its always good to get feed back. The diesel had to work very hard at times, even though the train was not very heavy as the gradients are pretty severe. I love to travel through New Zealand by train, as it is the best way to enjoy the awesome scenery. The sheep did escape with their lives..... just!!! I have witnessed storms and rough seas along this coast, with the spray from the waves blowing over the tracks, but I have never seen any real damage, although I am sure it must occur at times....Tim.

At 40 minutes or so, the train is alongside a Scania truck and trailer. Either the train is going very slow, or the truck is speeding. A single track road has a speed limit of 60 kph, and the truck is over taking the train.

Interested in your camera management. Presumably three firmly mounted cameras? One in cab and two others mounted on either side of the observation car? Impressed with the steadiness of all. Cheers, one camera is a GoPro fixed with a sucker fixture to the inside of the window, another is mounted on a tripod and the third is a hand held Sony PJ780VE Handycam. The last camera has a very unusual feature in that the lens floats inside the camera body almost eliminating camera shake. The GoPro uses an external battery and a 64GB memory card, whilst one of the other cameras uses mini DVD tapes and the PJ780VE uses both an internal hard drive and a 32 GB memory card. It all takes a a bit of editing together, but I love re-living the journey, often seeing things I might otherwise have missed. In a way I was lucky the weather was poor, otherwise I would not have had the observation carriage to myself......bye for now...Tim.
@Crintingnut

Timsvideochannel1 Thank you. Have sort of contemplated a GoPro for the car - people are starting to use them for evidential reasons. Wish I had one for our recent European rail, although it would have been blurred, side-on, mostly. We also took a Rhine cruise and it would have captured good memories, on the "gorge" day. We are looking at driving through the US Mid-west in a couple of months. Monument Valley and the Durango-Silverton train. Might be time to make an investment. Again, thanks for the postings and advice.

Hammers Hamilton Hi there are a number of sports cameras out there, some of them as good as GoPro. The reason I chose GoPro was the range of accessories, many of which I use. I started with a Hero 2, for the latest NZ trip I added a Hero 3 Black Edition Plus, there is little difference in the picture quality. The cameras do not like vibration the sort you get in a diesel loco....the result is a jelly effect....i.e. the picture looks as though is is being projected onto a wobbly jelly. The result from a car is usually very good, it was a video posted on KZfaq of the Haaste Pass that caused me to buy the Hero 2. I would love to do the Durango and Silverton train, I just need to persuade my wife, perhaps you could post some photos of amazing shopping Malls, that should do it.....Tim.

very nice video. shame about the weather. are the posted speeds (70, 50, and so on) kph or mph? the train seems to maintaining a good speed. it would be nice to have a speed indicator on the screen. the track looks to be in very nice condition... well maintained, with concrete ties by the look of it. this is tough railroading country...i believe there was a rack section on this line before the major tunnelling was completed. drone footage would be good if the drone could keep up with the train. looks like they recently renationalised the NZ rail system. probably a good thing.
@Timsvideochannel1
@Timsvideochannel1 7 жыл бұрын
Thank you, speeds in New Zealand are expressed in kph. The train traveled at a good pace for most of the journey considering the gauge is only 3 feet 6 inches. I need to find out more about speed indicators that can be displayed on screen. The track has received a lot of attention recently bringing it up to a good standard. I like to use my drone where ever possible, but as I live in the UK, it is not really practical to take it with me to NZ. KiwiRail has been re-nationalized, because the private company was only interested in making money and that did not include maintaining the permanent way which was being badly neglected.

+rich sheehan Thank you, the train does sound it's horn, but mainly at ungated crossings. The main roads are protected by barrier gates, motorists know there is a train approaching, so there is no real need to sound the horn, although I have visited other counties where the horn is used far more.
@goodeye03
@goodeye03 8 жыл бұрын
+Timsvideochannel1 Thanks, here in the US the horn is used at all crossings guarded or not. It is still amazing that every 48 hours there is an accident somewhere in the country at a crossing...Too many people are in a rush and try to beat the train...Some can take up to 5 mins to pass the crossings. Some towns go to court to get "quiet zones" and make the crossings silent, but it takes court action.. You've got a new subscriber, Thanks

So strange that they make ll these crossings without blowing their horn. Either New Zealanders are paranoid enough that they suspect trains everywhere and keep a very sharp outlook OR their death rate from trains and vehicles at intersections must be through the roof.
@Timsvideochannel1
@Timsvideochannel1 8 жыл бұрын
+David D Hi, the tracks were not covered with the bodies of careless New Zealanders, so I guess they are very careful around railway lines, although there are not many trains. I was very wary at level crossings. I asked a policeman why there are not many safety barriers on the mountain roads and he said "when we put up safety barriers people feel safer and drive faster, resulting in more accidents". Perhaps not being able to hear an approaching train means people tend to look more. It's an interesting subject.

Hi, I'm sorry you didn't like the way this was edited, I had three cameras set up, the idea of switching views was give more of an all round impression of riding this train, a sunny day would have helped too. I value all feedback as it helps me to improve the way I edit future videos.

The regulations on sounding the horn are different in different countries. In the USA there are regulations governing nearly everything because the legislators think everyone is stupid and there has to be a law for every activity. Also, they are afraid that the citizens will find out just how useless they are, so they keep them distracted by passing more and more laws that no one understands or complies with. Other countries interfere less with people's lives.

That's an interesting comment, New Zealand appears to keep regulation to a sensible minimum and people are expected to look out for themselves.
