NEW Coral Red Pencilfish Spawning (Nannostomus mortenthaleri)

Today I noticed my Coral Red Pencilfish (aka...Red Arc Pencilfish) spawning. This was quite the surprise since I’ve only had them a week. Many sources say these are challenging to breed, however other sources say they’re relatively easy. I’m sure if any fry hatch in the tank they will quickly be eaten by the adults. In the coming weeks I will focus on removing the eggs, or removing the adults and checking for hatched fry. So I've read some more about these fish and find conflicting data. Some sources say they are difficult to breed, while other sources say they are easy. Given they have only been in my tank for a week and they're already spawning, they don't seem too difficult at all. But, it was still exciting to witness and watch. Thanks for watching.

Great!..Anostomus anostomus has always been one of my all time favorite fish. To see its smaller relative doing so well ( forget spawning the big guys) puts them on my want list. I could go for a few in my planted tank.

fry are supper small! use golden pearl 5 to 50 microns! also low tds helps with hatch rates! you got this! cheers!!!

I did see one fry, it it quickly disappeared. Likely into the stomach of an adult. I will work on lowering the tds. It is around 200 for the neocaridina shrimp. I have all sizes of golden pearls so all set there. Thanks 👍

Mine have been breeding as well. I've got one fry but it could be from one of my tetras IDK.

I find a lot of my fish actually spawn in my aquarium but I've never had any fry. Whether that's because the eggs get eaten or the eggs just don't hatch, I'm not sure. I've seen lots of cory eggs get laid and just not hatch.

OK, I spoke with my mentor about his method for spawning these. He keeps his breeders in rain water. He keeps a tangle of Java moss and other plants in the tank for them to spawn in. He then removes the parents and allows the fry to grow up. The fry are very small and slow growing. My mentor starts them on infusoria and bbs. He uses 5 gallon tanks for spawning.

Yes, I bred about 50-60 fry. Sold a bunch and still have 30 or so in a display tank.

Spawning is not difficult with them the problem is raising the fry and egg survival rates. From experience extremely low TDS KH 0 and a PH below 6 is necessary. I use 100% RO remineralised with Discus vital. To ensure survival best to use a spawning mop in a separate tank with surface plants only (I use water lettuce) to provide confidence. Black water is also very beneficial for survival rates as it helps to prevent Ammonia and fungus . When spawned remove the parents and feed infrusia until large enough to take BBS.

Yes, I believe that is my problem. I keep the tds around 200 for the shrimp and have read it should be much lower. They spawn all the time, but so far I haven’t seen any fry. If any have hatched, I’m sure they were quickly eaten.

Would luv to have a dozen or so of those in my 240. Great contrast to Rainbow fish. I'm guessing they sell for $20 each? That seems to be the starting point for the nicer harder to find small fish.

225-250. Too high for the pencilfish, but perfect for the shrimp.

Not so difficult. My mentor breeds them in his basement, probably at 67 degrees. I'm going to see him this weekend. I'll ask him about his technique. I know that he raises small batches, like 3 or 4 fish at a time. I'll find out more on Friday. Cheers, Chris
