My neighbour sublet his flat for many, many years to many, many different 'tenants'. The housing association did feck all as he would always turn up on their visits, stay for a couple of hours and then bugger off. Not enough evidence apparently. I made formal complaints and they eventually took it to panel. They rejected all of my evidence and threw the case out so I took it to the Ombudsmen and won. I was awarded compensation, but most importantly an apology. My daughter and I were subjected to harassment, gangs, drugs, noise etc etc. He now has to live there under certain conditions and life is better. Don't stand for it people. Reach out for support from outside agencies. Don't let them bully you. I am now having issues due to repairs, so I tweet on the page of my landlord and miracles do happen. Especially when you attach photographs and name and shame them. The CEO's of these associations get paid the big money and are given titles etc, but they don't actually care about the working class who have to put up with so much shite and we all generally work so bloody hard. It is sickening.

As an American who watches the British Bad Neighbors show I found it curious why they moved law abiding tenants leaving the disruptive and one's falling to maintaining property in place. I'm glad to see the needy has someone onside to investigate and remedy the fraud. To the Councel woman who teared up I would say the residents voted the right person to office!

Maybe stop having children, I choose not to have children because our income wouldn't support another person. Why are people who are popping out children left and right prioritized over others struggling but being responsible? It is rewarding people making bad choices.

I think councils should put on there application forms and enforce a policy whereby if a person(s) is found guilty of this type of fraud they have voluntarily made themselves homeless and are prohibited from obtaining social housing in that council’s area. If councils could work together to produce a banned list so much the better. This is where it becomes controversial. A compulsory ID card could make this enforcement easier.

What I don’t understand is this: they’re in social housing yet continue to have more kids and therefore need an upgrade in size. No! He, at least, deserved some jail time and been required to reimburse to the council the fraudulant financial support they received. If they claimed they they were homeless and living on the floor etc, they probably got other support as well.

What's more shocking is...if Charles Hahn hadn't been so stupid as to submit a document showing a different address, there was no means of knowing he was earning a good wage from a public council? Assuming he was not paid in cash, applicants should have to provide a government issued statement of income, which he probably had to provide for a mortgage application.

It would be reasonable to assume that the perpetrators will not be deterred and will find another way to get what they want. Because they know that, even of they're caught, no punishment will be forthcoming

Housing security means everything. I'm not in Britain and where I live there is no secure housing unless you're rich, and it's getting worse. I'm 60 yrs old and have never once felt safe, never once. We do have some subsidized housing, but it's abusive at best, and the agencies that run them are downright evil. Having a secure home you know you won't have to move from changes lives, and not all countries care enough about their citizens to afford such human compassion. People who take advantage of Britain's humanity should all be charged and taken to court. Period.

I would like to see someone produce a series on those that received " Counsel Assisted Housing" .... and how long it took for them to WILLINGLY leave it and house themselves. Therefore making it available to others in need. I wonder how many episodes it would be??

You would think they would search their tax records from the very start. It’s seems it would be more cost effective to stop fraud from the start than having to go through the prosecutions and evictions.

After finding myself pregnant and homeless. I was desperate living on my last savings 3 months pregnant and contacted the hillingdon council. I was told I wasn't very pregnant, and it was okay for me to be on the street" I was also told to go back to area where I escaped abuse relationship 🙃. Unfortunately, my story didn't get better. I gave birth alone but with a temporary roof. I am 40 and worked hard all my life. Never expected this treatment when I needed help....

Only 2 years. Pathetic. Fraud like this should be a minimum of 5 years prison time and blocked from all future benefits rights for life. Was any of the money he fraudulently claimed recovered? Did we get the money back from the couple that went abroad?

I feel very sorry for care leavers and the lack of help they are given, why arent they always given priority? Just a small self contained flat until they are on their feet, even if it's in a HMO (house of multiple occupancy with shared kitchen.) They are just kids when they're left to fend for themselves, it must be completely overwhelming for them. They are the ones who are helpless and really need help. It makes my blood boil to see this fraud! Having said that, councils need to be wary of the 'I've just had a fallout with my family...no place to go' story. That's often a ruse to get a permanent place, give them a hostel place until th situation is resolved.

The thousands of illegal immigrants are landing at Dover every week! The world is wondering what is going on in England. It is outrageous that Britain is so generous with housing that taxpayers are paying for.

I live on Norway and instead of counsel housing you get housing benefits. Meaning you find your own home, and the government helps pay when your income is too low. To me that seems like a much less complicated way of doing it.

This just the tip of the Iceberg. Lots are at it and never get caught and when you just get a 120 hour community order it seems worth the risk.

Week in week out these council employees emphasis the rentals are for those in need of housing. Then when they catch fraudsters they are givin soft sentences and still house them. Uk is definitely a soft touch.

The Right to Buy scheme should be abolished or at least tightened up-no wonder there is a shortage of rentable accommodation.A brand new Brratt housing estate has been built near me where a four bedroomed property costs £389.000.yet my local council is advertising Right to Buy homes there-the same four bedroomed house is available for £120 000 if you have been a council tenant anywhere in the country for only two years.This particular house was the showhome so also comes with lots of furniture included in the price.There are around thirty other houses available for even less.I understand how difficult it is to get on the housing ladder but there are times when it's very unfair to hardworking people who aren't currently tenants.

In the US we have a similar problem. People with trust funds. Good jobs. With properties. Applying and getting public aid funds. But here…it’s legal. If you hire the right person, to represent you in court. Or hire them to sue for the aid. It’s why medical aid is so expensive in the US. And so hard to get it, if you really need it.

Should receive huge fines as well as paying all the money back that they stole from the taxpayer.

These frauds can only happen when we have a system that can be defrauded. Why don't all systems link up via the National Insurance number.

I know a woman who got a fantastic flat in London- as a working illegal immigrant with no rights to anything. What happened after she was arrested? nothing they let her stay then she moved out and she collected 16k move allowance.
