I believe the reason for the slow boil time is because of the stand off lip at the bottom of the kettle prevents direct contact to the stove top's surface. If you had a lift off stove top lid like traditional wood stoves your "rocket flames" would be in direct contact with the bottom of the pot instead of secondary contact. This would maximizing heat transfer and dramatically reduce your boil time! I like what your doing!

Hi! Thanks for the video, nice stove and all! I think a solution for the rather long 14 minutes boil time could be a different kettle- we have the same kettle that you used in the video... so, I assume it has a seam at the bottom that stands out, which creates a hollow space when placed on a flat surface. I guess these are made for gas cookers, since they might hold the heat better, not sure. However, on a flat surface with no direct flame, the air inside of that space creates a good insulation layer, preventing the water from being directly heated. A pot with a flat bottom might yield better results, maybe? :)

Yes Alexander- I know that a removable circle to access the flames direct would be best- but my channel is about making the best out of what you have! here is a video I did on pots and pans for woodstoves- kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ZshmrbVj16zbYnk.html

This is the first rocket stove I have found interesting. Re., the kettle, I have one that appears to be identical, it has a raised rim around the bottom where the top and bottom are joined; the bottom on mine is thinly copper-plated stainless steel, so slower than a full copper-bottomed kettle's heat transfer at the outset. I believe the raised ridge reduces the contact area compared to a flat-bottomed kettle, and that is slowing the boil (not an issue with gas flame heating coming up from underneath). Just a thought.

yes -I agree re the kettle, see my video on choosing pots for woodstoves. I have 3 kettles and they all have lips on the bottom, but this one has the bottom pressed down to increase the contact area, this is the best one.

Ok here goes for boiling water etc. original woods stove have a removable lid. You need to cut a small hole out. So kettle sits over flame.

Yes that would make it even better on the hotplates. It's the oven that was the let down though. New version being made now has all problems sorted. Wait till you see this one!:

5:35 I use Toilet paper (fresh roll never used in bathroom). Its not like they pretest them by wiping an ass in the factory and then wash it off, its just paper and it makes great kindling. It also bruns nice and completely, at a low temp which is actually better at starting a fire than newspaper that burns hot, but less total energy.

Great design, have the same kettle which is more suitable for a gas flame. If you could locate a flat base plate kettle for an AGA stove would get a faster boil.

Here's an idea. You have a divider in your combustion chamber that spreads out the burn into a U shape, but instead of just using firebrick why don't you replace it with a hollow tube, which you can use as a pre-heated air intake. A hole in the near end goes into the fire box, and a hole thru the bottom at the end of the tube and a long handled damper should do it. And maybe if you put the air intake to the SIDE of the firebox, would the air would come in at an angle and create a vortex? I don't know, but it might be worth a shot
@t.h.o.r.
@t.h.o.r. 6 жыл бұрын
Sacwriter I'm not clear with what you mean about the tube part But yes, the 90 degree bend is a thing I tried on another fire. It did create more heat and a fiercer burn but I couldn't stop the sticks burning back too far. The heat I have sears a steak well. I don't need more than that for cooking. It would be a real heat bonus on a water heater though. Google 'Marshall water heater" it's an old NZ design that worked brilliantly

Did the extended chimney make a difference. When you look at fuel costs you know it's worth having one. Next to no smoke once she's at running temp, good for the environment. Way to go. You could get carbon credits on that lol.

this is very cool. i just cant figure out why the longer chimney would give you a hotter burn. is it the higher pressure? but then then bottom of the U should have some pretty high values as well. so what is happening here?

Question: why the smoke gone? is it because the temperature is very high with this stove design?
@t.h.o.r.
@t.h.o.r. 5 жыл бұрын
Yes. Its a combination of 3 things. The big airflow , and the insulated chimney within the hotplate area. also, the secondary air intake which leans it further and allows a longer flame path.

Close to where I live is a huge dump recycle shop. they have dozens of old BBQs and sold me 4 cast Iron plates for $2.00 each.
@TombstoneHeart
@TombstoneHeart 5 жыл бұрын
Here's a tip re the cast iron plate. I've managed to accumulate a little stockpile of various bits of cast iron plates and open grills just by waiting until my local council has a bulk rubbish pick up. People put a lot of old gas BBQ's out for pick up and I just drive around the neighbourhood and take the plates and grills out of them! I should have enough to fabricate a complete rocket stove by now.
