The alleged driver, Alyssa Shepherd, 24, said it was too late by the time she realized a bus was stopped on the two-lane highway, according to an audio recording obtained by ABC News.

@R Dog I have tried many times to make our schools safer, especially the bus line. Since I neither have money, nor influence, nor power, in the community, people like me are ignored. Our concerns are shrugged off, our advice doesn't matter, until a lawsuit looms because of their negligence. Suddenly we have a voice, but by then it is too late to prevent. I tried working with the school, but after a couple frustrating years trying to make a difference, I started homeschooling my child. I don't know how these people get to be in charge of anything, they don't seem to know what they are doing. Kids were being physically and emotionally abused by teachers at my daughter's school, yet no one took it seriously for a long time. Kids are human beings but they treat them like cattle. They all deserve better. If I had the money, I would build a learning center for our community. Teach kids skills that will get them a career without getting into debt.

I’d like to know how many of you commenting are or have ever been a school bus driver? I’m just curious because some of the comments with ideas to make it safer for the children to load and unload a bus are actually dangerous. As a former driver the safest way to pick up and drop off is the child being let out on their side of the road. No crossing.
@Joshua79C5 жыл бұрын
I just posted a comment stating that very point, same side never cross, even in my old hometown they never let the kids cross the road when it was a main let alone lesser two way one lane each direction, and one location had a literal bus stop with shelter for the residents of that place that then swung around on a connector road to where I lived on a one lane road and had to go around front of the bus every time due to the house location, other side was unoccupiable land due to terrain and such.

Exactly.. let my child out into a muddy ditch if you have to, but do not put that much speeding road in between
@robertanickerson14725 жыл бұрын
K 2daJohnson it just amazes me that some people don’t understand that same side pick up and drop is safer. Blocking the road just gives the assholes more space to try and go around the bus. There’s also some bus drivers that would bitch because it would be more turn around for each bus load of children. Those are the ones that don’t have kids. Although my children are all adults now something has to be done to protect these children. I have lots of answers but anyone with the power to make it safer for the children don’t want to hear about solution because they cost money

I agree but that would be difficult when kids live on both sides of the streets. But yes on a busy highway like that yes it would be better. There's 1 person to blame: the killer who CHOSE to break the law by speeding, failing to stop for flashing red lights regardless if she was too dumb to see it was a school bus (I don't believe her ) and the cars behind her stopped for the bus, and not adjusting her driving speed and attention needed for the dark conditions, to recognize a bus in the dark (please! ), see that kids could be there and NOT pass the bus when unsafe to do so. NONE of those things happened by accident, just by her criminal negligence. May she indeed rot in hell.
@hegemonycricket21825 жыл бұрын
NO talk of being distracted by a phone? the only way someone wouldn't recognize a big yellow bus "until it was too late" is because they were TOTALLY DISTRACTED and not paying attention. Our society is addicted to phones, connectivity, and social media, and we must have a conversation about mitigating the death and destruction caused by this addiction. Even if this accident had nothing to do with phones, so many thousands are lost everyday because of DISTRACTED DRIVING. Put the phone down and keep your eyes on the road.
@carltonbankz92735 жыл бұрын
Well your driving down the highway at 6:45am pitch black out and see flashing lights to your left but don’t know what it is into your up on it and the kids are walking from the right side of the road I could kinda maybe see what she saying but still her fault I mean as you can see even when the police and ambulance got there it was dark so think about 15 20 mins before that. In a town close to my own they have buses stopping on a 2 lane highway where the speed limit is 70 mph and people almost running into the buses since the stop arm comes out when they are coming to a stop and not before plus the lights are always flashing on the top and back the arm doesn’t start flashing into it’s activated....but as I said this is still her fault and something she and her own 3 kids that was in the car with her will have to remember for the rest of their lives if old even to remember.

It may not be the school district to blame for the bus stop. I live in Fort Wayne in, and our school transportation had to fight with the trailer park where I'm at to even get one stop inside it. They said the bus cause road damage inside the parks. They was wanting small children to wait in the ditch across from our trailer park to wait. But a bunch of parents said they'd move or stop paying lot rent if they did that. Cause there was literly no room for the kid's to stand where they wanted them at. It was literly a ditch and a property fence next to a busy street.

One day as the bus was just coming to a stop, the little girl got so excited she slipped her little hand out of her mom's to run to the bus and was hit and killed by a gravel truck; not sure if the bus driver was waving the truck around or the truck driver didn't see the bus was stopping- either way, despite all her caution and care, in one split second her daughter was taken that morning. @willie peppers .. I don't believe the school bus system should be taking the risk of picking up or dropping off children from the opposite side of the road from their driveway. As long as children are allowed to cross the road to get on or off a school bus, these kinds of things are going to continue to happen. Parents with their children at the bus stop crossing the street can, and will get hit by distracted, intoxicated, or otherwise impaired drivers. It should not be a risk we are willing to take. If we were able to predict what other drivers were going to do 100% of the time there would never be accidents involving people getting hit on the street. School buses should not be picking up children from the opposite side of the road.. we just can't trust that all drivers are going to use caution.
