All of NE is underrated actually, in my opinion they’re the best & most successful singing group of all time, this generation oughta know more about them, & look to them for inspiration, I know the album I’m working on was influenced by them somewhat.

Marley Mal so true I feel Johnny brought that mature adult sound I think the Heartbreak album is what allowed the others to branch out and do their solos. I might be in the minority in saying New Edition became a better group when Bobby left and Bobby was able to shine on his own. But the addition of JG turned them into men.
@marleymarsss7 жыл бұрын
Dwayne D Bro I totally agree, they became men on the Heartbreak album and JG's vocals and presence made it that way. He took them from a teen pop sound to a more traditional R&B. After this album everyone went on to be incredible in their solo projects. I agree about Bobby too, they were great with him but when he left and went solo he blew up and so did NE with JG. All of those guys are amazing.
@Diwani_Spark147 жыл бұрын
Marley Mal Exactly. I think with a lot of these groups one's departure leads to the group's gain and individual success. Bobby had his issues but had star quality. Ralph was the de facto lead singer but he needed a strong voice like Johnny Gill to balance his voice out. It's almost like having a falsetto and needing a bass voice to for harmony, although Ralph was a natural tenor. When Bobby left you found that Ricky had vocals too, which led to the BBD success. They grew. We can go back to the Temptations. David Ruffin had a powerful voice but I believe that the group became better without him rather with him with the addition of Dennis Edwards. But anyway I can break this down all day I enjoy talking music.
@marleymarsss7 жыл бұрын
Dwayne D Lol same here man, I can go on and on about this music, I totally agree with you on the different dynamics of both groups. There's definitely parallels between the two. Did you watch the first part of The New Edition Story? I thought it was pretty dope.
@Diwani_Spark147 жыл бұрын
Marley Mal Yep definitely saw part one. The big thing I noticed is none of them had fathers, and the mothers were banking in on them for their success. That deal they signed as kids was beyond disastrous they were working for free. Also I did noticed that Bobby was portrayed a little older at the beginning but he is actually the youngest member of the group so when they formed he was 9 while Ricky, Mike and Ralph had to be 10 and 11. Ralph seemed like he had the most sense out of the boys he was loyal. Can't wait to see the other parts. Again you see at the early stage that without having guidance from fathers can do.

Johnny Gill was to NE what Dennis Edwards was to the Temps after Ruffin left. He gave them a grown up sound. a real masculine voice to the group.
@shinekonyah59637 жыл бұрын
@blackturkdog, David Ruffin has a super masculine wondrous voice. Dennis Edwards was good but no-one to this day can come close to David's voice and the way he tackled the lyrics while going in and out of his falsetto. Don't forget that he made the Temptations when they came out with My Girl. He lead several hits during his reign: My Girl, I'm Losing You, I wish it would Rain, You're Lose a Precious Love, Beauty's Only Skin Deep, co-lead on You're My Everthing, and last song, I Could Never Love Another. No one can tough the late great David Ruiffin. RIP
@divadoll6065 жыл бұрын
@@shinekonyah5963 Exactly, David Ruffin was an extra special vocalist. I listen to their music all the time with David leading. The dynamics of his voice was brilliant. You'll Lose A Precious Love and I Could Never Love Another are incredible, and Statue Of A Fool, heartfelt and soulful to the bone.

@@shinekonyah5963 David didn't make them Eddie originally did their first hits were Eddie singing lead
@Keepdapocket4 жыл бұрын
@@shinekonyah5963 hmmmm stop it. David was bad, but if broken down without bias, Dennis was.just as good, and sometimes better. Dennis was able to sing rhythmic lyrics better than David, such as Cloud 9. David would do better on songs such as "My girl", that require a subtle softness. De nis just had to take it to church whenever he sang, but he had a very strong falsetto. I advise you to check out "I'm losing you" live. He wore that song all the way out.. But, my favorite lead Temp is the one and only Ali Ollie Woodson. Without bias, he was much better than David. He could sing in a growl, soft, church style, much higher falsetto, better dancer, you name it. Also, you need to actually look at documentaries. Many of motwon people believe Levi Stubbs was the best singer in the motwon family, followed by Margin Gaye. Otis himself said, and I quote, "Levi Stubbs was always a problem. If the Four Tops knew how to dance we would be in trouble." Dont let swag distract you from the actual art. It's like when Lil Wayne was hot. He was out because of his swag, but everyone knows he was wack as hell as a lyricist. Difference is David could actually blow. He could sing his butt off and was a bad boy, but to say no one can touch him is utterly ridiculous. Being original doesn't make you the best.

Judging from some of the comments, some of yall haven't done your homework on what acapella/harmony singing is....So It's Time to set the record straight for those who don't know the New Edition Vocal Set-Up: Ralph Tresvant - Main Lead Singer/2nd Tenor Bobby Brown - 2nd Lead Singer/2nd & sometimes 1st Tenor Ricky Bell - 3rd Lead Singer/1st, 2nd Tenor & Baritone Ronnie Devoe - 2nd Tenor/Baritone & Occasional lead Michael Bivins - Baritone/Bass & Occasional lead Johnny Gill - 4th Lead Singer/1st Tenor, 2nd Tenor & Baritone New Edition sang as a group on every last one of their albums and there are even clips of NE recording their parts for the "Heartbreak" album with Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis..Then there are songs like "Maryanne" where all 5 New Edition members sing lead & sound good...DO YOUR RESEARCH BEFORE SPEAKING ON WHO CAN'T SING

D. Vader you are wrong. Johnny Gill was the best thing that happened to NE because he added a maturity to the group that took them away from that teenie bopper sound. Also Johnny Gill is a super dynamic singer and was a star in his own right who was successful as a solo artist before joining New Edition. He also put on a great show in 1991 here in Pontiac MI AKA Detroit at Meadowbrook Theater with a very receptive mixed crowd who enjoyed every minute of his show. Johnny never changed outfits during his performance and at the end everybody in his entourage including the janitors who swept the floor danced on stage as the show rapped.

I love the flamboyance, style, and flair which Ralph brings to every performance. He always adds a nice sparkling "finish" to his dance sequences. In this outfit, he is reminiscent of a young Gregory Hines. It is a wonder that Ralph never learned to do tap. He seems to be able to perform all different styles of music and dance artforms (solo, rap, beatbox, shuffle, freestyle, new jack swing, early '80's street style break dancing, etc). Even MJ dabbled into tap, and was influenced by Fred Astaire in that regard. On some of the Jacksons' 1970's television spoofs, there were scenes where Michael showed off his tap dance skills and wore outfits with hats, as Ralph is doing here. One aspect where MJ and Ralph differ is that Ralph has swag, raps, and has street cred, whereas MJ dabbled into tap, and did soul, pop and disco. I would have loved to see Ralph try his hand (in his prime) of singing that soul song which Mike sang as a kid, which I believe was, "Whose lovin' You".
