New England Swing 2: NYC FAIL

3 жыл бұрынJaime and I departure Pittsburgh Allegheny County (AGC) Airport hoping to swing by New York City for a flyby of the Statue of Liberty on our way to Martha's Vineyard. During our IFR departure, we were able to show a Standard Instrument Departure (SID) procedure and then brief the special flight procedures for the Statue aerial tour. Unfortunately the weather developed well ahead of the forecast and this mission was a failure...for now.

As a former airline pilot, I have to say your co Pilot is better on the radio communication than 99% of professional pilots. It’s definitely a huge help when your co pilot can handle a radio like yours, especially in busy airspace like Chicago or New York. Fortunately for me, my girlfriend has picked it up like a pro after only few coaching from me. Cheers.

Charlie-Oscar-Lima was the first VOR I ever tuned into while taking flight lessons almost 45 years ago! Brings back many memories!!! Son-of-a-biscuit is my new favorite saying!

As a kid flying up to MSV from TTN before moving down to ATL (PDK area) I used to love tuning into the Huguenot VOR and hearing it say "Hugh-Go-Not V-O-R". I don't know why I remember that specifically but it was always a checkpoint we used while following the Delaware River up to NY. Hope you had a great trip.

The best part of your videos is listening to how you speak to ATC. It isn’t all procedural and shows that it really is a conversation with wants and needs from both sides. I only got a little of that as an IR student and I love watching real ATC folks talking with their peers. It takes the stress off.

2:50 is so wholesome, and I agree that the aviation community is awesome! I'm not a pilot but aviation is one of my interests, so I might one day work towards it. I just love watching aviation videos and everytime someone recognizes a pilot from KZfaq I find it heartwarming. Looking forward to seeing the rest of the swing!

Very interesting video. Can't wait to see the next part. I landed at Martha's Vineyard in 1972 as a student pilot on my second cross country flight. I was member of Quonset Point Naval Air Station Aero Club in Rhode Island (now Quonset State Airport). I landed at Martha's Vineyard the morning after the only hanger had burned to the ground full of airplanes the night before. Very memorable. Keep up the videos. I follow you via KZfaq and Google Earth Maps all the time. I live just north of Dallas now. Thanks!

Even though you ended up not doing it, I love that you showed pilots how easy it is to ask for the unusual, even when on a IFR flight plan heading into very busy airspace.

The Statue is a wonderful sight, I've seen it many times in all my years of trucking (35). I'll bet its amazing from 500ft. Maybe y'all will get another chance to see it from the air. Great video, thanks for sharing...

As I sit on extended time off (voluntary) it's good to hear familiar voices. I've talked to you quite a few times coming in and out of MDW. Thankfully, it takes is many controllers to manage empty planes as it does full ones.

Wife and I spent a weekend in that hotel a few years ago when the Cubs were in town. Saw a couple of Cubs/Pirates games, took the inclined railway to the top of Mount Washington, ate dinner overlooking the three rivers. Fun weekend.

It was nice to here a ATC recognize you both. I'm from the NYC, NJ area , so I know it well. I really hope you have a second chance but just seeing you both heading for Martha's Vineyard where my sister in law used to have 2 rental properties , makes me happy for you. Love Martha's Vineyard, and Nantucket. My neck of the woods. We did a Covid anniversary loop, ACK, BHB, and Lake George at the beginning of Oct. First close call with ice of the season.

Great video, Kevin. We attempted to fly the Hudson corridor a couple years ago when we flew my mom from Chicago to FRG for a visit. WX didn’t cooperate for us then either. Still a fun trip!

I just started watching your videos. Came across your channel researching for a future purchase. Great videos, I really like the way you edit and capture your trips. I couldn’t help but feel like I recognize Jamie. When I came across a video realizing she’s a controller, I think that’s where I know her from. I’m a controller at Gillespie Field in San Diego, CA. I think I went to the academy with Jamie in Sept/Oct 2007.

I've flown in the NYC area for many years. I've never heard them be that cooperative. They are very professional, but with the amount of traffic, they typically can't accommodate many special requests.

I regularly talked to philly approach during my training, and as long as you stayed clear of KPHL, they would let you do pretty much whatever you wanted.

We were also very happy with the service from NY Center and Approach. As Robert mentioned, with COVID that area is way down so that probably helped some. :)
