To note! Jeremy Crawford said that the need of a magic arrow in order to use your arcane shot was a typo. You can fire any arrow and use arcane shot. Your arrows become magic later on. Hopefully this link works mobile.twitter.com/jeremyecrawford/status/927660837916983296?lang=en

There has been an errata for the Arcane Archer regarding the use of arrows. The player no longer needs a magic arrow to utilise Arcane Archer abilities, which lessens the dependence on a generous DM.

@@TitanGamingTV currently playing a samurai. In regards to rapid strikes, if you haven't seen the sage advice, it works a little different than a first read would imply. You take one attack at advantage and split it into two. The first one is normal, but the second is still at advantage. So really, you take 3 adv attacks, and just add a normal attack in there.

This channel has super high quality videos, you guys should maybe do some live Q&A's for dungeon Master questions, I know stuff like that is all over if you look but it's so fluid and subjective I honestly can't get enough of it. It's really good food for thought, and you seem like you'd have a lot of good stuff to say on the subject.

Thanks Alex. Players will always be my boo, but DMs pay the bills. I'm here for my DM people, you can't have enough study material when you're first getting started. I've been working behind the scenes on some new ways to encourage deeper conversation -- live streaming included. Stay frosty for that coming out :)

A really good point with Strength Before Death is that while your Fighting Spirit’s temporary hit points won’t save or stabilize you, they can save you from making a death saving throw from damage. Which is useful if you’re out on the front lines and you might need that extra turn for the Cleric to get to you, and because nobody wants to take that automatic crit, so even if you can’t heal yourself in that last turn, saving a use of Fighting Spirit could save your life.

Test played a cavalier last night at 11th level. Mounted combatant feat is BRUTAL!!! I went variant human, 18 str, 16 con, mounted combatant, shield mastery, sentinel. It's important to know that there is no overlap between any of these feats and cavalier abilities; they are carefully designed to go together. He always attacked at advantage, could knock folks down, protect his horse and teammates, locked down enemies.... very effective, give it a try.

So the Cavalier is basically a 4e defensive fighter? Glad to see them bring some of that flavor back. I know some people who really miss that playstyle.

I'm happy about it too -- I think its an interesting thematic merger, while walking away a little bit from the 'horsemaster-only' concept that has a hard time in general gameplay. Plus before this it really was quite tough to play a defender archetype (that actually felt worthwhile). Some of these powers are very satisfying.

Dago Red I love it, but my fellow players are... now at range with bows... I also started with durable as my feat and we have NEVER had more than one fight a day... or dungeon delving... I can be within 5 feet of opponents attacking teammates, or 5 feet near a teammate once I'm level 7... but... without a horse I feel kinda... useless outside of bring a normal fighter... I don't get what my dms trying to do... if I'm not using my archetype at all outside of being a town guard and riding on horseback... and I get to lvl 4... Imma be upset... I'm already upset honestly... Even later on... I wanna use my durable feature... I was only allowed to choose from two feats and I replaced one for the other since lucky wasn't really being useful to me. I don't get why I just get to be a fighter without the archetype powers while the others get to show off their powers... I could've honestly just gone samurai and forced advantages on attacks and be a stronger solo tank

The Arcane Archer seems really focused around players who really think about the strategy of their archery. I really like how you point out story bookkeeping, like needing to seek out magic arrows in town and things like that. The Cavalier is utterly terrifying and seems a bit like the quintessential "tank" as people who play World of Warcraft would think about it (as compared to the Warrior class). Plus, you can do mounted combat! Fighters have needed a mounted combat feature. The Samurai seems really, really flavorful. I love how this archetype focuses on mental fortitude increasing fighting capability. It feels like an archetype that encourages foolhardiness and risk, and I am always a fan of high-risk/high-reward classes. Great video, as always!

I think I pinned it on this video, but Papa Crawford at WOTC clarified that it is NOT required to use magic arrows to activate AA powers. Still its a worthy statement about story bookkeeping :)

I have a Samurai NPC that’s been helping the campaign I’m DMing for my parents. It’s been interesting role playing a more stoic character and his ability to keep fighting even after the player characters have gotten their squishy spellcaster asses into a bind has proven invaluable. Now I just have to find a third player so I don’t have to keep doing that...

I've named a samurai-esque hero in my world 'The Stoic Blade'. She's kind of a death-before-dishonor type, made a name winning battles as a commander for her lord but was exiled when her lord was killed by assassins anyway. She took the pseudonym to hide her identity, and now roams the world looking for a worthy cause (hopefully with some revenge thrown in).

you only get 2 arcane shots per short/long rest to start with? hmm..sounds kinda meager tbh. Would probably rule it differently. I'd probably rule in my games that you would start with 3 uses and you would get more uses each time you would be able to get a new arcane shot feature ( 3 at level 3, 4 at level 7, 5 at level 10, 6 at level 15 and 7 at level 18)
@TitanGamingTV
@TitanGamingTV 6 жыл бұрын
I feel that -- as a discussion point, there is a difference between Arcane Archer and Battlemaster in terms of damage burst/impulse. Nearly every AA shot deals 2d6 extra damage (expected: 7), but can only be done once per turn. BM maneuvers typically deal battlemaster die extra damage (d8, expected: 4.5) but can be done every attack (4-6 uses per short rest). It sounds more or less equivalent to me, but I'd be in favor of your pitch. I think players should always have more options/power. One beef I do have is I think 'Ever-Ready Shot' should be a 7th level power, not 15th, which might matter in this hypothetical :)
@Dutchofclass
@Dutchofclass 6 жыл бұрын
and there is the crux..AA's feature may be more powerful overall (cause you can restrain, stun, banish etc) but the overall uses you get is far less. Do you feel this needs to be addressed or do you have a different opinion on this?
@TitanGamingTV
@TitanGamingTV 6 жыл бұрын
I think its OK as is, but my RPG attitude relies on the fact that Humans play DMs. If something needs to be tuned, don't hesitate to reach out your hand and tune that knob. I think the question lands on the gaming culture of the group. O.G.'s from prior game editions may not lean as hard into the play-cadence of Short Rest after every combat. There're a lot of 5e classes that see objectively game-changing resource benefits from short resting every possible opportunity. Perhaps the answer lies in the middle - in low Short Rest games we up the Arcane Shot count to feel more empowered. In high Short Rest games, it won't be noticed. Let me know what you think :)

Another option is to base the AA on the Eldritch Knight for spells and cantrips, but institute the AA level based abilities and run the arcane shots are powered by spells lots, it just takes a little tweaking for spell slot level based effects.

I really like the arcane archer's features but I think the thematic element is a bit strange. Like there isn't really anything there. Just an archer with some cool magic. I kinda feel the same way about arcane tricksters.
@TitanGamingTV
@TitanGamingTV 6 жыл бұрын
I feel that, RCB. Like the magical aspect was just glued on after the fact. Arcane Trickster I kind of appreciate the mage hand focus, but since illusion magic can be so hit or miss depending on the DM, the archetype gets diluted a little in effectiveness.
@owl2944

I think if they worked more on the thematic elements (maybe gave the arcane trickster some unique spells /abilities) then they would be more interesting.

I didn't have a look at the Fighter Archetypes in Xanathar's until I wanted to make a Monster Hunter Bowman, and I didn't wanna go with Ranger. Arcane Archer does what I want it to do, and does so on the Fighter chassis. Might splash in some Scout Rogue for extra oomph and a better Monster Hunter feel. Might grab some Ranger for Colossus Slayer, or that Monster Slayer's non-spell Hunter's Mark. The basis is going to be Arcane Archer. As for Samurai and Cavalier.. I couldn't really care less about those 2, personally. Also, that "When you fire a MAGIC arrow" thing? They Sage Advice'd that because that was left in by accident. It doesn't need to be a magic arrow. That'd be weird. You get an archetype feature, but you can't use it unless you have a special kind of ammo. C'mon, the Arcane Archer's specialty shots aren't THAT good.
@TitanGamingTV
@TitanGamingTV 6 жыл бұрын
What moved you away from Ranger for this one, DJZ?
@DragonKnightJin
@DragonKnightJin 6 жыл бұрын
Mostly the fact that I have a strange dislike for the Ranger class in general. It's fine if someone else wants to play them, and I won't stop them from doing so. I just don't like the feel of the class personally, so I'd probably never play one as my 'main' class. 3 level dip is alright, but that's hardly a 'Ranger' anyway.

Question: As the Samurai Archtype, when you interrupt the turn of the creature that reduced you to zero, does the creature get the rest of it's turn after the affect strength before death ends?
@TitanGamingTV
@TitanGamingTV 6 жыл бұрын
Narratively speaking, I would think yes -- the triggering action/effect resolves, reducing you to 0, then you get an out-of-turn turn, and then the flow of combat continues as normal. I'll report back if theres a formal ruling on it. Be right back.
@TitanGamingTV
@TitanGamingTV 6 жыл бұрын
No explicit ruling -- assume the flow of combat continues as normal after the out-of-turn turn.
@twilight5625
@twilight5625 6 жыл бұрын
Titan Bear Gaming Thanks for the reply. I assumed as much but couldn't be sure. I think that potentially it could truly interrupt their turn as a high level reward or some power granted by a powerful being. Not sure how balanced that would be however.
@TitanGamingTV
@TitanGamingTV 6 жыл бұрын
Its a worthy discussion -- especially when you envision damage sources that have multiple components within the same turn. Like the Extra Attack feature or Multi-attack. If you're downed on the first attack of three, then there's still the following two attacks to play out. I think narratively it all still fits, but its a worthy consideration.
@twilight5625
@twilight5625 6 жыл бұрын
Titan Bear Gaming Final Question: Is that ability once a day thing or does it just happen every time they are reduced to zero. If it's once a day I would feel more comfortable granting that power as a reward. Otherwise they could really disrupt the action economy by just constantly healing and attacking.
