This is another video in my series “New Forest Walks” accompanied by my Whippet (Logan). In this episode, I visit the Fritham in the North of the Forest (about halfway between Fordingbridge in the West & Cadnam in the East) and explore the surrounding area.
I park my car at the Forestry Commission car park on the edge of the village and start my 5.5 mile circular route by heading north to the beautiful Eyeworth pond. The pond was originally made in the late 1800's to provide water for a gunpowder factory which closed in the 1920's.
After exploring the Irons Well at the end of the pond I follow a gravel track up towards Longcross Plain to another pond that is popular with ponies & cattle. I get to see some lovely young donkeys before heading further North to Pipers Wait - the highest point in the New Forest.
My journey then takes me Westwards, following the old New Forest boundary (also the Hampshire / Wiltshire boundary) alongside Franchises Wood until I get to Bramshaw Telegraph. There, after investigating a natural spring and passing near the source of the Latchmore Brook, I head South through the wonderful Eyeworth Wood and back to Fritham.
Note: A number of sources on the internet, including Wikipedia & Historic England, suggest that Fritham lodge dates back to 1671 (as I indicate in the video). However I see that in the photograph that I have put up in the video of the plaque below the gable on the house (which looks recently painted & refurbished) gives a date of 1635.

Glad you got to visit the pond Tim. It looks even better in the Summer with the reflections of the sun on the water.

Bizarrely "chalybeate" is pronounced ka-li-be-at (don't ask me!). Great video as ever Dave. There's always something to see in the Forest!

I think you'll have to rename the series "Dave's pub walks" after this. By the way, Logan's gotten wise to your cry of "Fish" Dave! I think Logan saw the bike and dog basket and thought that looked a good idea. Maybe a new series of Dave's countryside bike rides?😊

Hello Dave, just found your channel, love your videos! I agree with you that Eyeworth Wood is one of the best in the Forest, I’d love to see more footage of it, so many amazing trees. I believe there’s reputed to be a carving of a prizefighter on one of the old beeches, though I’ve never found it!

Thanks Chris. I didn't know about the carving .... must keep my eyes peeled next time I am walking in that area. Thank you for watching. Look out for a "virtual walk" video that will be published on the channel around Christmas .... it was made in Eyeworth Wood.

Nothing nicer than walking by water. Thank you Dave and Logan, that was very pleasant, not a part of the Forest I know.

Hello Dave and Logan. You always manage to find a pond which looks extremely blue. I know it’s a lot to do with the light at the time. Talking about the speed of cars on the Forest roads. When I’m using those roads and spot animals in general, I always assume they may well decide to cross the road in front of me and therefore slow right down.
@DaveFord
@DaveFord 2 жыл бұрын
That is certainly the correct approach Lionel, for sure. You just never know what livestock will be on the road around the corner as well as deer.
