This is another video in my series “New Forest Walks” accompanied by my Whippet (Logan). In this episode I take a walk from the town of Lymington which is situated on the edge of the Forest, West of the Lymington River on the Solent.
My 4.5 mile circular walk starts at the Church of St Thomas and takes me North, past the Bowls Club & The Monkey House pub to the ancient Buckland Rings Iron Age Hillfort.
After spending some time exploring the fort, I continue to head North along Boldre Lane before going East across the Lymington River at The Shallows (a ford crossing). I then head South alongside the river through the Lymington Nature Reserve before going over the causeway (bridge) back into Lymington. If doing this walk in the Winter, I would suggest wearing some good waterproof boots for the Nature Reserve section.
I follow a lovely cobbled street off the High Street which takes me to the old Quay and then on to the historic Seawater Baths. Logan & I end the walk with well deserved ice cream, sitting on the quayside.
Route details: I parked at the Cannon Street car park in the centre of Lymington and walked down the High Street (westwards) to St Thomas's Church. I headed North through the churchyard & past the bowls club to Avenue Road where I turned left and then right again along Southampton Road (A337). Just past The Monkey House Pub, I turned left along a lane for 50 yards and then right on to the grounds of the Buckland Rings Hillfort.
My route took me North, through the fort, to come out just by a railway bridge on the A337. I crossed a roundabout (B3054 to the right), keeping on the A337 and just after the roundabout, followed Boldre Lane for about half a mile.
Just after the Shallowmead Nurseries, I turned right down a sunken lane & crossed the Lymington River at The Shallows (there is a bridge there). About 50 yards past the bridge, I went through a gate on my right & followed a path (South) through the Nature Reserve. This came out on the Undershore Road which then joined the B3054 across the Causeway back to the town. After crossing the railway line, I turned left down Gosport Street and at the end (where the High Streret ends) turned left down a cobbled street to the Quay. To visit the Seawater Baths, just continue South along Bath Road and past the lifeboat station. Then head back the same way to the High Street & back to the car.
