After much deliberation and a rousing speech delivered to the crew it was decided that this adventure would be extended from an overnighter to a twover nighter (definitely a real phrase) as the weather was looking decent and the legs seemed willing.

You're not going to mess with a gang of donkeys! I never saw more than two at a time and they always very much seemed to be on their way somewhere and only stopped to offer me the briefest of greetings. Much friendlier than the ponies though

Good going once more, Jethro! A less stubborn biker would have been happy with a night in a campsite cottage but your rough style makes it more fascinating for us viewers, lazying and cosying in the warmth of our sofas 😁

Believe you me, I am far from averse to a night in a luxury cabin. I was trying to do this one on a budget though and couldn't really justify it after my £15 fish and chips.... £15!!!!! When I was a lad a bag of chips was tuppence ha'penny ;) I did luck out though and the wild spot turned out really nice. Better than the previous night in fact.

Yes you are right about breakfast. If I’m on a cycle tour i look for somewhere i can get the full fried menu, bacon , eggs beans . Not something i eat too often at home , being a bit concerned about my arteries ,but essential when on the road.
@JethroJessop

I'm exactly the same, fry ups are my holiday meal and I rarely eat them at home. Occasionally I go to the farmers market and get some really good sausages and black pudding and do my own but I'm too lazy to make it regularly. It involves too many pans and makes too much mess ;) On the road though, fry up fro breakfast, burger and chips for lunch, rinse and repeat!

Porridge gives a good start to the day, especially if you use it to power yourself to a greasy spoon cafe for that long lasting plate of fried energy! Waking up in a tent I usually just want to get on with the day's journey so I'll have porridge for its quick energy and prep time, then after a couple of hours of cycling and I feel that I have started the day proper, I'll aim to have something substantial as I'll usually be cycling until about an hour before sunset. TLDR; porridge for roadies, fry-up for tent-ies .

The fish and chips were from a place called Deep Blue in Lymington. They were very good and it was a massive piece of fish but it was £15 which was a shock! In my head fish and chips is still a cheap meal but I guess the world has moved on from there. Glad you enjoyed the ride. There is one more day coming and then I'll be thinking about what the next little adventure is going to be

It's pretty cool seeing the donkeys in the wild. Egg, milk, bread, maple syrup, butter. Three to four slices of French toast is a good start to a day of riding but that requires some perishables. Blueberry oatmeal is fine as well to get going as long as I can find more protein.
@JethroJessop
@JethroJessop 4 ай бұрын
The ingredients could definitely be brought along on a trip. I've already done two videos entirely focussed on riding with eggs 😉 A shallower pan would probably be better for that kind of thing and that might be a slippery slope that ends with me packing a salad spinner
@laughing-knees
@laughing-knees 3 ай бұрын
If you want your oats to give you long-lasting energy, don’t use instant oats. You need to use either steel-cut oats (best), or rolled oats. Since cooking them in camp uses up too much time and fuel, soak the oats overnight so that they are ready to cook the next morning. Then, aside from the nuts and fruit you already put in, also add in full-cream butter (it should be fine for a few days, unless it’s very hot), and, in the case of savory oatmeal, exclude the dried fruit, and instead put in full fat milk powder, bits of fried bacon, and a soft-boiled egg. That way you get enough fat and protein to keep you going longer. Instant oatmeal is like candy: it breaks down too quickly. You can also add in sour cream for thicker consistency and satisfaction. I’m curious, what is that toothed contraption adorning your neck? I did see quite a few donkeys throughout your journey… that wasn’t a yoke by any chance? I once bicycled through the area north of Hannover in Germany and happened upon a military training zone. It was late October, cold, pouring rain, and I couldn’t find a place to stay . The youth hostel earlier in Lubeck wouldn’t allow me in because I had lost my youth hostel card, so I had pushed on in the dark to find a campsite. The military zone seemed to go on forever. At one point, I don’t know how it happened, but I got so sleepy that I started veering left and right, and before I knew it, I found myself careering off the steep side of the road in a ditch roaring with runoff. I dragged myself and the loaded bicycle out of that, and, dripping wet and shivering, managed to make it a few more kilometers, until I found a small copse off the road, hidden by thick bushes, and there I put up my tent and collapsed into sleep. I totally got your feeling at the end of your video!
@JethroJessop
@JethroJessop 3 ай бұрын
I'll be honest, I thought all oats were rolled. I've never heard of steel cut and I assumed the instant stuff was probably the sweepings from the mill floor 😉 I like your idea of mixing in all that extra stuff but I think I'm gonna carry butter, bacon and eggs with me then I'll probably just ditch the oats completely and have a fry up 😀 The thing round my neck is a necklace I made. It's a stick of European Lime that I picked up in Sweden and turned into beads. The toothed bits are where I left the little branch offshoots in place to preserve some of its stickness. I've made a few more since, they are available on my Etsy store in fact if you fancy your very own toothed yoke 😉 Your hard night sounds harder than mine. I was lucky to find a decent spot fairly easily. But there is nothing like finally crawling into your sleeping bag after a day like that and slowly warming up with a belly full of food. I assume mine

You're eating the porridge wrong, you need a 1.5 L pot 😂 and heaps of dark chocolate, and maybe several big spoonfuls of peanut butter. But I always eat again before 2 hours of riding has gone by anyway. Usually something like cookies or muffins or twix bars for second breakfast. Then fish and chips! I eat at least 5 times a day. And when I'm sweating I'll eat potato chips nonstop, they're a perfect electrolyte replacement with massive amounts of potassium. I prefer to eat most of my protein later in the day after I've done most of the riding.
@JethroJessop

You’re right on with the porridge, I’m always hungry within 2 hours of my breakfast porridge, but it is very good for you though Jethro. Sets you up for a second breakfast, in a caff somewhere later. Ha ha! Whereas a good fry-up keeps you going far longer. You’ve done well to get out in this unpredictable weather, and to camp out too, good man. I’ve enjoyed this vid, thank you.

Really enjoyed that post, a great little adventure with some truly lovely riding &scenery. Laughed out loud when you recounted the tale of those vicious, vicious donkeys🤣 bless them, they look adorable. Totally agree about the porridge! Being a carbohydrate it causes an insulin high, and when the pancreas has balanced the sugar hit, it leaves a craving for another sugar high. Tastes nice, but useless really. Folk eat it because they've been told its a soluble fibre and good for lowering cholesterol. If you buy into that..erm story! But the protein and fat from a good old fry up (so long as you don't use vegetable oil to cook with), is perfect for energy, satiety, and muscle repair!😋 Great post Jethro, really looking forward to the next video, and to find out if you were mauled in the night by roaming, bloodthirsty donkeys!?🤣 Take care Jethro!😊
@JethroJessop
@JethroJessop 4 ай бұрын
I try not to think about the nutritional value of my food. I just want to feel full and for it to taste nice ;) The real benefit of porridge is that it is easy to transport and quick to cook up. I have indeed been told it is a good cholesterol food, by pretty much everyone who has ever cared to comment on that aspect of it. Do you have good evidence to the contrary because if you do I'd like to see it - I know a few people who might stop banging on about it if I show them some hard evidence ;) I can let on that I survived the night without any attacks by donkeys, ponies, badgers or other beasties. There was am owl doing its thing through the night but otherwise I was unmolested. I'm just planning another little sneaky trip for April. This last one really got me in the mood :)

You had a lucky escape my friend. Those donkeys are fearsome beasts but I’m thankful you didn’t encounter the Gloucester Old Spot pigs that I saw roaming the forest in a very intimidatory manner this week. I’ve mentioned before that the Forest is my home patch, pigs are normally only let out in the autumn to eat the acorns (pannage) so I don't what these beasts were doing out this time of year but It makes me uncomfortable. You will have done well to keep talk of full English breakfasts to yourself until safely on the train back to Berkshire.

It does seem like camping is becoming a real "experience" industry rather than a practical means to an end. I get it that they need to make money and are trying to add value and it's great that people are doing it but it is a pity that it all comes at a cost for those of us who just want a flat place to pitch for a few hours and a shower. I have notes from my first ever multi day ride in 2010 where I comment on the high price of a pitch that cost £6! Crazy how much it's gone up now
