I suggest not going the exemption route. There are issues that you have to work around that isn't worth the hassle. Just get a UPC barcode. They're only like $10. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/h9GYq9uas7SlZas.html

While this video is almost a year old, and Amazon has change the add product screen a bit, it was very helpful. Oddly enough when I followed your steps and selected my product category, I instantly received this "You have been approved to list products in the below brand and category. You can start listing these products after 30 minutes." It did not ask me to submit proof. Maybe because of the category, not sure but Yay! Thanks again!

@@CrescentKao Hi Crescent when was the last time you created a GTIN exemption? Upon the attempt of creating my bare bones listing by submitting a GTIN exemption application I receive a Internal Error. After reaching out to seller support they have notified me that the process for GTIN exemption has changed. "Please be informed that, note after 24 hours, you can add your product in the same way you would with a GTIN. There is not a separate process for exempt products the system will recognize you and your exemption approvals and allow you to proceed without a GTIN (Product ID) be sure to enter the Category and Brand/Publisher name exactly as they appear in your exemption approval notice. " I'm currently waiting to see if goes through as I just submitted my listing and hopefully it works out, this was previously submitted and was saved to my drafts.

Exemptions apply to products within an entire category.

Hello! I'm glad you find value in the video! You'll be able to change it later once you establish a brand. I don't recommend the exemption route, its much easier to getting a UPC to avoid these problems.

You can find other people that want to trade reviews in Facebook groups but I don't recommend it. You can also have friends and family do it but be extremely careful doing any of this. I have a question, If we create a listing with such a exemption and sell product but later at some point say if at all this listing is hijacked by someone and in conditions when the matter gets escalate to amazon support, do you think we will get full support from amazon as the brand owner like we will get had the listing was created with UPC code purchased from GS1? With UPC exemption are we getting exposed to loosing legal battle with amazon if at all listing is hijacked later at some point by someone?

Hey Crescent, thanks for the video. What would constitute acceptable branding for Amazon using this G10 exemption method? I assume you have to show your product is not just a generic one. For example, can a sticker with my brand on it be attached to the packaging be enough? If you have a generic product but apply for a barcode, does that mean you technically don't need to personally brand the product/modify it to sell it as a private label?

GTIN exemptions are category specific. If you sell something in another category, you'll need to apply again for the other category. I suggest not going the exemption route, always get a UPC barcode. There's too many little issues to deal with if you go with an exemption.

Hi Crescent. Great video and helpful. I quite like the idea of applying for an exemption as presumably it means you can load test / dummy listings in Amazon for new products and make sure you know if any additional approvals are required by Amazon before you can sell that product and before you start assigning barcodes, because as I understand it, one the barcode is assigned, you can no longer change it. Today for example, I was setting up a new test listing and assigned a barcode to the listing, only to find afterwards that the product category required Amazon approval to sell in it. This wasn't clear or obvious beforehand. I also think it is partly to do with how Amazon mapped the product category as the same products appear in Amazon in several places and I'm guessing I may have selected one of he paths that triggered an Amazon approval? If I'd known that would trigger pre-approval, I'd have selected a different product path. Does that make any sense to you? Also, quick question but are there any issues with getting the exemption from having a UPC for Amazon. As you said, you'll need one if you want to sell your product outside of Amazon but presumably it wouldn't impact your Amazon listing later on down the line if you got the Amazon exemption but then at a later date decided to acquire a barcode so yuo could sell your product elsewhere?

@@CrescentKao Hi Crescent, the main reason I'd be using the exmeption route is becaue it would allow me to create test listings on Amazon without having to keep chewing up barcodes. I know you can buy them cheaply but it does seem a bit pointless to chew up lots of barcodes if you just want to test whether you can get a listing approved to sell on Amazon, before paying out too much on samples from suppliers etc. Presumably Amazon must have a huge list of defunct or dead products on their database with UPC's attached to them from users creating products they decided never to sell or weren't able to get approved and didn't realise this until they got to the stage of trying to set up the listing. And even if you have the exemption, doesn't it just mean the barcode field becomes optional i.e. you could still populate it with an actual valid UPC if you wanted to assign one to your product? Or am I missing something?

so I wanted to sell on amazon and I found a wholesaler who sells items in bulk and I bought my order through his catalogue . when I started listing my item I had to list it as item not sold on amazon because some of the items were not on amazon. so I was required to fill in the manufacturer details but I don't have that as I did not buy the items from a manufacturer as I mentioned before I had bought it from a wholesaler so I wanted to ask as to what to do.

Thanks for the info, but still a little confused on this. I'd like to apply for a GTIN exemption under my brand name (not trademarked yet, but will be eventually), but I don't have the product photos yet. Can I apply under my brand name, then provide the support letter from the brand or would that not be approved? Or is it best to get an exemption under a Generic brand name and wait until I'm able to get photos of the product?

Hi Crescent. My supplier is packing a number of products into one bag and I will be inserting a custom made product description label in this transparent bag. I will be sending an EAN bar code for them to affix to the bag. I have simply written my business name on the label. Now when I went to list my product in ASC, under ' adding a product not sold on Amazon' once I selected the category I went on to Title then entered my EAN no. and manufacturer as my business name, all was well! I was then being forced to enter a brand name? When I tried to continue without doing this, a 'No Entry' icon kept appearing as my mouse hovered over the 'save and finish'. Keep getting the message that brands should be registered. Appreciate your thoughts please.

Hello Crescent! I've been trying to add a product listing that has variants and every time that I complete all required information of the product and its variants, it saves and until it appears in the inventory, it says "incomplete" and when I click on it, it shows me this message: This SKU has an inconsistent product classification with the ASIN. Please submit a feed to update this SKU to match the ASIN product classification. Do you have a solution for this? I've opened a lot of help cases by this point and no solution yet.

Great Video - very clear but I have a question. I have GTIN exemption in pet supplies (bundle). I was told by SS to put "Generic" in the "Brand" box which looks lame. I do not want to invest in trademark or logo. My seller application shows my storefront name and that is what I want to use - how to do this?

Correct. However, I suggest getting a UPC barcode to avoid having to deal with inconveniences with a GTIN exemption. Barcodes are only around $10/ea.

Thank you!!I followed the exact steps and was granted exemption on Mobile Phones & Accessories category but everytime I try to create a new listing under Electronics >Mobile Phones & Communication>Accessories>Cases & Covers>Other (Cases & Covers) the Product ID is still required with a red asterisk. If these are not counterfeit products, then they should already have the original manufacture barcode on them from the brand owner.

After creating a listing to sell Can Opener with the purchased UPC code, but later plan changed (cannot sell that Can Opener). ASIN has been assigned. To not waste the UPC code, can we later re-use the created listing to sell Camping Hammock by updating the details in "Vital Info" (product name, category etc), while the UPC, ASIN remain intact?

You're welcome! I don't suggest getting an exemption unless you have some specific reason to do so. There's too many issues you'll have to deal with. Always get a UPC barcode. Nationwide is fine.

Hey, If I have a existing product with a UPC Barcode purchased from a 3rd party (Speedy Barcodes) and I get approved for GTIN can I delete the UPC Number in my listing provided by speedy? Also can I add GS1 barcodes to products in the future to listings that were origionally created with GTIN?

Hello. There's no reason to not use the UPC barcode if you already have one registered for a product. If you have a product listed using a GTIN exemption, you can update it with a UPC at anytime later.

If you bought a UPC, then use it. Put "NA" in the manufacturer field, not "N.A". Going the GTIN exemption route as problems and issues you'll have to deal with that's not worth the hassle.

I am doing the same steps you have shown above in your video, but mine does not take me to the page where it says "submit proof." My page says "You have been approved to list products in the below brand and category. You can start listing these products after 30 minutes." I am still unable to get an ASIN number. The GTIN exemption is for an entire category but the FNKSU's will be different for each variation. I suggest getting a UPC barcode rather than an exemption to avoid some issues that using an exemption has. Barcodes are only like $10/ea.

I got approved for a GTIN exemption in about 5 min :) Even though I bought 10 sku's from GS1...probably should have waited but I'll need them eventually. Question: If you register your trademark with the IPO and get brand authority through the brand registry on Amazon, will your FNSKU change? Will you need to resubmit your product listings with the sku and brand once registered?

When I went through the process as you described I never saw a screen where you have the "check" mark under status. It just said "Add a Product". Another question: Let's say that we get our Logo/name "XYZ" trademarked and legally protected by going the USPTO route (I know this process takes months). I assume that it is not "legal" or "allowed" by Amazon to seek GTIN exemption by keying in "XYZ" instead of "Generic" UNTIL the "XYZ" is actually legally protected upon being awarded a trademark, correct? It is just that "XYZ" looks much more "professional" than "Generic" in the listing.

In my opinion, it's not worth the hassle having to deal with all these little issues with an exemption. You can get GS1 barcodes for less than $10/ea from 3rd party or direct from GS1 for $30/ea now.

You can apply for an exemption at any time. You still may have issues with branding if you don't have brand registry. I suggest getting a UPC rather than going the exemption route to avoid having to deal with issues related to GTIN exemptions.
