Jimmy, ya went on and did it to me again. The last time it was the black sparkly Firefly Telecaster with all the features for less than $200, This time it was the Gretsch. Yep, I hooked up on a Gretsch G2657T in turquoise and Bisbey. Musician's Friend had a $150 off sale on them, and I bit at $399. The retail price there was $450 and even higher elsewhere, so here we go again, Bud. I'll let you know how it works out. Lordy, Lordy, Lordy, all these guitars and I can barely play a pentatonic scale, but I'm old, it's my money, I earned every damn penny of it, so in just a few more years it won't matter one little bit either way. Have a great weekend, and keep cranking out the videos.

Awesome guitar Jimmy. I'm glad that you finally bought one and put out a demo. I have one almost identical to yours. The color of mine is what Gretsch calls gunmetal. I also picked mine up for $250, open box. I only had to adjust the action just a little. The fret ends and intonation were and still are great 2 years later. They really take pride in all their guitars from the setup to boxing. It truly is one of my favorite guitars that I own. Thank you for the great video. Have a great weekend!

Hey there Frank in NY…thanks so much man. You know, in the middle of this review when I strummed “that” chord, I remembered all about the years of discussion about how they achieved that big opening sound to the song, and of course the movie. George was playing his 360 12 string which gave it that “sound” along with John on his EJ-160 and of course Paul playing the D bass note, along with Sir George Martin on the piano stab, holding down the sustain pedal… I wasn’t going to play it, but decided I would construct the little backing track and go ahead with it…of course Sony Publishing hit me as soon as I uploaded it so I can “share” my couple bucks of ad revenue with Paul and Yoko…lords knows they need the cash…🤣 Truly appreciate your stopping in…glad you enjoyed…much thanks! 🙏👍

@@JimmyStewart1 No Kidding! WOW! They made you contribute to the starving artists! If there was ever a 5th Beatle, it was George Martin. He led the way. Been stuck in Jazzmaster Mode ever since, though I do have a Squier Paranormal Offset Tele, and a PRS Zack Meyer. I'm always looking for something lighter, I'll have to check out the 2655! Thanks for the commentary and playing. I'm on the fence about pulling the trigger on a G2622T deal for $10 more than what you paid... Imagine this model with a Bigsby and a body that's 2" wider (granted, I prefer smaller instruments). I wasn't expecting this predicament of sorts (ha), but an e-mail showed up this morning. Hollow and semi-hollow instruments, especially with the frills (Bigsby, raised pickguard, f-holes, binding, etc.), have always held an allure for me. What to do... All the best! As an aside, that song you played at around 29:00... I think you may be onto something.

Another great N.G.D. Video from the Stewart man . I am a fan of the Gretsch guitars and I have a G2622t in gold with a bigsby and it was one of my first guitar’s along with a Washburn HB 30. They were my 4th and 5th guitars in my collection and I love them both but I am a lot more fond of the Gretsch than the others mainly because of the sound of the pickup’s and the size and weight is good for learning to play but how ever I play it less these days because it is a much more expensive guitar 🎸 alone with the Washburn in my collection and I have others that I can learn on. I think you made another good choice as you always do and I know you will enjoy it as I am enjoying mine. You are absolutely in the right place at the right time for such great deals and keep up the good work and I hope that when you start thinning out your collection you will give us a opportunity to buy from you. 1) Gretsch seems like an overlooked brand with a lot of low cost models worth looking at! Their fit and finish seems pretty impressive, too! I’ve tried a couple of Gretschs at my local music store, and I REALLY wanted to like them enough to buy one on their fit and finish alone, but I just didn’t bond with them that much for some reason, maybe in part because of the super glossy necks, which I found very sticky. 2) As I understand it, the Gretsch family still owns the brand, and could theoretically take it back at any time, but Fender owns the manufacturing and distribution rights-basically, Gretsch’s relationship with Fender is similar to that of the EVH brand. 3) The Broadtron is indeed closer to a PAF-style humbucker than a Filtertron, but it is different from a PAF humbucker, too. As I understand it, Seth Lover originally designed the PAF humbucker to sound close to a P90, while Ray Butts originally designed the Filtertron to sound similar to, and to fit in the same routes as the DeArmond Dynasonic single coil pickups that Gretsch had been using, at the request of Chet Atkins, who couldn’t stand the hum of the Dynasonics.
@JimmyStewart1
@JimmyStewart1 10 ай бұрын
Hi PG…good observations again my friend. Though Gretsch offers this model with P90’s as well, I decided to go with the Broadtrons as I wanted something just a bit different then my other semi-hollows. Yes, the neck is gloss…would prefer a satin finish there, but even with the very high humidity here the past few weeks, I didn’t really find it sticky in my initial review. Fit and finish is excellent, and the deal was to good to pass up…😎 Appreciate your dropping in and sharing your thoughts. We could discuss pickups all day….🎸👍

@@JimmyStewart1 Probably true! It is nice to see Gretsch being resurrected now, even if it is under Fender. Another interesting fact: Back in the 1970’s, Gretsch nearly died after it got bought out by Baldwin in 1967, who ultimately shut down their original New York factory and tried unsuccessfully to move production into the southern US, effectively leaving Gretsch without any manufacturing facility. That is why Chet Atkins, who helped design many of the original classic Gretsch models, left them for Gibson in the early 1980’s, which he remained with for the remainder of his career. Gibson put out several Chet-endorsed models, including their version of the Country Gentleman, with a 1” longer scale length and Gibson-style humbuckers, and a solid-body electric nylon string guitar that Chet helped design. Privately, however, some who knew Chet personally, said that he was not very happy with Gibson, and never liked them as well as Gretsch. Chet owned the trademark on names like “Country Gentleman,” which is why Gretsch today has had to come up with other names for them like the “Country Classic.” The 1970’s really seemed to be a dark time for virtually ALL the guitar makers, including CBS-owned Fender and Norlin-owned Gibson, as it was for much of the entire USA.

@@JimmyStewart1 Yeah, as I say, the late 60’s and 70’s were clearly dark ages for all of them, but it was even darker for Baldwin/Gretsch than it was for CBS/Fender or Norlin/Gibson, which at least still had sizable factories and distribution networks. I love the Gretsch brand, and I still hold out hope of getting one soon, if I ever find the right one!

Do you know if those pickups have ceramic or alnico magnets? I ask because I've spent an hour online trying to find the specs and I can't find anything definitive, even over at the Gretsch user forum. I know some people say they are a little "muddy" (which makes me think of ceramics) and have a high output (which also makes me think of them as having ceramics) ... but I know you can also have those traits in a pickup with alnicos.

Fender does NOT own Gretsch. They do, however have the distribution and warranty work as well the the Fender custom shop does build the very expensive USA Gretsch guitars out of Corona, California. Everything else is from Japan, Indonesia, China, and Korea. Gretsch Company is head quartered near Savannah, GA and still making Gretsch drums in Ridgeland, South Carolina with an agreement with DW Drums making the budget drums out of Taiwan.

@@JimmyStewart1 enjoyed it and it sounds great BTW! I own a 2022 G2622 and loving it. It is actually good for gigging in my own opinion. I may put some Filtertron pick ups later, but, as you said there is nothing wrong with the BT 2S. Although they just updated to the BT 3s. Gonna keep with these for a while. Well built and sounds and beautiful. Mine is the Single Barrel stain and is gorgeous.

I was attracted to the streamliner series since they first came out. And there's a model that came out in a blue sparkle, which was really nice.iunfortunately for me, those humbuckers are too dark and dull, sounding.

Hi Mike…nice to see you and hope you are well my 🇨🇦 friend! I don’t think the BT’s in this are all that dark really. Yes, they are not your typical sounding “Gretschy” Filtertrons, but that is what actually attracted me to this series as I was looking for more mid-range punch. You could always upgrade them..😎 Thanks so much for watching and commenting with your thoughts! 🎸👍

Hi Mike you are right about the pups sounding a little dark but that's on the G2622 which I adjusted the pole pieces on mine. The G2655 which is the one Jimmy has is not as dark sounding for the record ✌️

@@davidkastin4240 I could put a set of filtertrons in this and still come under the going street price, but I wanted to try out the BT’s as I play more of a “bluesy” style of guitar and these were designed to give a bit more “mid-range” grunt while keeping enough of the high end sparkle to differentiate them from a standard humbucker. These are also available equipped with a set of P90’s, but again, though the P90 is my fav pickup, I have other small body semi-hollows with P90’s already so wanted to see how these BT’s would be. I think they sound pretty good (for humbuckers) 🤣

@davidkastin4240 Here in canada, that guitar goes 48 hundred dollars. If I was to spend that kind of money on one I would not want to expect to change the picks. I like the sound of the jet pick ups. But that's way more pricey than this one.

Misspoke on the tricolor (ultra prismatic), I have the PRS and LPS versions. It took awhile for the others to sell, so I find it interesting that they re-introduced the LPS. I might wait awhile on the 338 version to see if the price comes down. Nice to see that my new cherry burst 3 pup has already sold out , I feel good now that my OCD is paying off! Do you have any info on production numbers? Do they generally order the same for each? Is it normal to re-introduce past models? Certainly hope so for the MadCat! another couple of things I noticed, they sold out of one of the DC's, and they have reposted the Strawberry Shortcake (good name Jimmy!) but have it marked as sold out. So glad that I found out about FireFly, there is a lot of fun to follow a specific brand, and one that is trying various things. I get some of that with IYV, Leo Jaymz and others, but I feel a connection with FF that goes beyond that. Anyhoo, I got to get back to the Garden to see if anything new has sprouted! Take care and have fun!

@@scottmartin356 Firebird Music has always been pretty tight lipped on production quantity over the years. It will certainly vary by model and even by finish. Sometimes, they will re-introduce models depending on sales. The 338 model was really their 1st big seller, so they continue to build and sell them. They are always updating as well, as the new ones will now sport stainless frets, ball ends and upgraded Alnico 5 pickups (Pro Version). The LPS is another big seller, so they continue to produce these as well. A new shipment of the “MadCat” Tele is in the works, should be available in about a month (give or take). Exact availability is also kept tight. They announce “time frames” but until they post them on the web site, you never really know for sure exactly when.
