Joseph, you are a gift from God. I've been following your advice for a couple of years now, and you have quite literally helped to save my life. 30 years of insomnia, wide awake for a week at a time. Living zombie. I sleep like a baby now. My life is better in every single way. If I have one night that I can't fall asleep, I don't stress it, I get up and only go back to bed when I'm really sleepy. I get up at the same time every day, no matter what. I only go to bed when I'm about to fall asleep watching TV. I implement all of your advice and everything you say is relevant and for very good reason. I've even gotten off of Zopiclone! So, thank you. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for giving me my life back! You are incredible! 🥰

Shannon that is absolutely wonderful to hear! You know insomnia took everything from me, 20 years of my life, divorce, depression, lost business living in a van, I became a ghost of a person because of it and there was so much shame attached to it. When I overcame it, it was only guilt that was left - how could I have let myself become like this? The reason why I started doing this was to help other people, for them, and as a way to give meaning to my own insomnia. Hearing you and other people say this has given me a way to let go of that guilt and know that I had insomnia for a good reason ( I hope this makes sense - I haven't explained it very well) I am so pleased you have overcome your insomnia and that you have got your life back. And thank you also from the bottom of my heart for telling letting me know! It's made me very happy! Joe

Even after attempting bedtime restriction for 3 months, I still only get 4 hours of sleep per night and always wake up 1-2 hours before I want to. How would it be possible to get myself to wake up the same time every morning at the time that I want to wake up, if I keep waking up earlier? Should I then restrict my bed time to only 4 hours? Moving the entire window 2 hours earlier would not be practical for me.

How do I stop waking up in the middle of the night?

you continue to wake up, but you don't mind about it. You just feel relax and wait for sleep to come back. Just don't mind about it, don't check the clock too much

@@MaryBrigid11 Hi Mary, really happy to help! Yes people are often amazed how quickly this can start to work. If you think about other mental health concerns these can take years to see improvements. However, because insomnia is both physiological and anxiety/obsession/ control driven - if you can fix the physiological aspect (the brain taking on a learning an unhelpful pattern of sleep) which ca literally be done in weeks with the right behavioural changes (think about how badly people sleep after extreme jet lag, but they can start sleeping well again after only 1 week with the right behaviours) So by first fixing the physiological side of insomnia and rebuilding peoples pattern of sleep, you get a quick win, you learn there is nothing wrong with you. And then this gives people the confidence and motivation to tackle the other side of insomnia (the anxiety/obession and control) This side takes longer, but at least you've already seen good progress already and this gives people the motivation to keep going! Anyway I don't think I've explained this as well as I'd like - but it's such an important topic it deserves it's own vide, i'll make it!
