One of my FAVORITE games I learned to do with kids is the "gift" game. Everyone sits in a circle and closes their eyes while someone puts a "gift " in the shoebox. Then everyone goes around taking a turn to open the box and say something they appreciate about the gift. I.e. "I like how smooth this rock is," "This marble has cool swirls." And it's great when everyone starts laughing at silly ones while still learning the concept.

I highly recommend the book “Connoisseur Kids: Etiquette, Manners, and Living Well for Parents and Their Little Ones.” I used this for a brief unit on etiquette at our co-op for the grade 2-3’s. It was a lot of fun as the book has great hands-on activities. I’d say the kids’ favourite class was when I gave them each an action that was the opposite of a different table manner I had taught them. Then they each ate their snack like that and had to watch each other to point out what they were doing incorrectly. And “the art of napkin folding” - we had fun practicing that as well. 😁

I've been debating about starting the Simply Charlotte Mason program, "Laying Down the Rails" for some time now. Habit training is definitely different now days. I'd love to see updates from this unit you're doing with the family.

I can’t wait to see this… I’m also from the south and this was just understood. I have a much smaller family than you, only 4 kids…my first was an only for 7 years… we have tried so many manners books over the years, I think there is a real change. We are in S.FL so I’m not sure how much is b/c of that vs something that has changed over the years or in the genes or water- but these kids just don’t get it like we did

My mom did this when I was in school!!! I'm so glad she did! She even taught us how to set the table and which ways to pass the food or where to set the meat and who serves it up etc... please and thank you and your welcome were a part of our meals for a while, then they became a natural habit 🙂 she had us put our napkin in our lap for a week or so for practice and our elbows off the table and which forks and spoons to use at fancy dinners 😉 just so many different scenarios and ways to do thing so we would grow up mannerly and kosher and ackward in society!! She had books too 🙂 she talked to us about how we sit and carry ourselves and how we walk... with confidence and then went on to teach us how to protect ourselves in public, etc. But that's a different subject!! But I am so excited to start home schooling this fall!! ♡♡

This is a great idea! Brooke Romney has a flipbook called something like 52 Manners for Teens. My young teens are experiencing some of the awkwardness of not really knowing what to say/do sometimes so I we’ve started that. I was listening to an analysis of Pride and Prejudice that said the book and really most of Jane Austen’s book were about the manners and etiquette of the day. That made sense of some of the interactions in Pride and Prejudice for me. Anyway, we’ve recently watched the movie and I’m looking for a simplified/abridged version to read or listen to before we read the full book. Wouldn’t a manners and etiquette unit alongside a Jane Austen unit be a great fit!?

My husband is Indian so we have a rule in our family that we can eat Indian food with our hands but with other foods we use spoons/ forks. It’s also considered very rude in most Asian cultures to wear your shoes inside someone’s house. There’s no way to know every rule for every culture but if you give a few examples I think it can help kids to be mindful when they are in a cross cultural situation either to pick up on the cues or to ask for help understanding what to do. My 3 and 5 year old have no trouble understanding why we eat some foods differently and they think its fun to figure out how/ why people do things differently!

Manners like these were something that I wished my parents would have taught me more of as a kid because it really doesn't come natural to me. Obviously, you have to kind of watch out for what is actually respect and kindness for others and what is sending the wrong message to kids. A dinner at the end sounds fun! Where I live, there are Knigge manners classes that end in a ball after ballroom dance lessons. I never had one, but it sounded very fun and like an opportunity to play adult for a bit.

Thank you, thank you for this video. I am wondering if most young adults and kids even know the meaning of the word manners! I remember looking for a reference book when planning my daughter’s wedding years ago and someone said I should try to find one published during the Jackie Kennedy era as First Lady……which I did and also found a book called New Manners for New Times. This book probably needs updating to 2023. To me, manners are so very important to be a put together successful person. LOL

I love what you said about books in your home; critical thinking skills are important to foster and if you only allow materials that completely align with your values, how do you teach kids how to think through the things that don't? So, so important. We discuss movies, music, books... Learn to disagree and discuss respectfully; skills which are so lacking today

I think this is great and a very real lifetime skill. Knowing what's appropriate and when and being able to tell the difference. Some career choices would use these skills even more so. Having the knowledge and know how is wonderful. And embarrassing if you don't have it when you need it. Plus kids and teens are gross. 😄

I have a question. No one in my family understands the importance of learning and maintaining manners and etiquette. It bothers me that I can't explain why it is important to yourself and others around you. Nothing I say is enough to show them why they need to learn this. What can I say to bring them over to the knowledge that these habits are important?
