Already went down on my new Rally (just a heavy sand spill) whilst solo riding, and I was laughing how easy it was to pick it up, dust myself off and keep riding. Not a scratch on it either. Well designed with high mounted turn signals. The perfect machine for pretty much going anywhere at a modest pace.

A CRF450L Rally.. with bigger tank and we all know Honda could rework the engine to get better or longer runs between maintenance schedules, 6 gears, ... BAMM!!! Could that truly be the altimate dual sport? ... Would it finally kill off the DZ400? .... It certainly would be much lighter than the 650s from any manufacturer, plenty of power, ease of handling... What more is there to say... Build it Honda!! We will buy it

I bought one of the first 300 Rallys to arrive in Central Florida about 2 weeks ago. I was looking for something much lighter than my Tiger 900 RP for tight trail work and dealing with the Florida sand in the middle of summer. So far I love this bike, I did add 2" bar risers for easier reach while standing and I found a Honda Indonesia skid plate that mounts above the stock plastic piece for additional protection. I will be letting my adult son ride this one as well now that I have 2 adventure style bikes and if Honda would build a 450/500 bike just like this with reasonable service intervals then I'd probably trade the Tiger.

To be honest..the real strength of the Honda Brand is that they may not be the fastest or the most out there designs ( with a few notable exceptions) but bikes like this that are dual purpose without being too focussed towards competition...the real strength is their longevity..A Honda will outlast other brands and stay looking good and working well with basic maintenance..and this could be in your garage 40 years from now working beautifully!! It doesn't seem like that long ago all of us dealers had everything in stock at all times and if you ran out, no worries as Honda had it in the warehouse and you could have it within 1-2 weeks. Now, there's nothing in the holding warehouses and good luck on ordering anything and actually getting it in a reasonable time unless luck is really on your side. What would you buy for a beginner- 300 rally or KTM 390 Adventure? Great video.
@HondaProKevin
@HondaProKevin 3 жыл бұрын
That's a good question... and a difficult one to answer lol! Technically speaking, the 390 Adventure is better than the CRF300L Rally in almost every measurable way. But that doesn't paint the whole picture for a new rider. I would look at the maintenance schedule for each and call the dealer (if you're not doing it yourself) and get them to price each service, the KTM will cost more. Also, I would look and see how many local KTM dealers you have as sometimes that is a big problem for people if they have an issue and need assistance but the closest dealer is 100 miles away etc whereas you can find a Honda dealer on every corner lol. Also, I would ride them both and see which one just feels better to you as sometimes that can be eye opening. Spec sheets can only tell you so much and sometimes a bike may be better on paper but the overall package isn't up to par with something that may not be as good on paper but it all comes together in a package better, if that makes sense. Another thing I would look into is their parts cost, we all drop them eventually and especially if you're a new rider off-road, you're going to drop it. Sometimes those parts can get rather expensive but thankfully on the Rally, 99% of it is a lot cheaper than you'd expect. Long story short, the 390 is better on paper but I wouldn't go off just that. Sorry for the long winded ramble, hope some of it was helpful ;) Thank you, greatly appreciated!

Yes sir, thank you for the support and kind words... Oh yeah, that CRF230L is horribly underpowered once you start to even think about the highway. It was a good effort from Honda for their first attempt but they really started to nail that package down when they went to the CRF250L platform and now it's bang on with just another slight performance bump among the other tweaks of course. You'll feel like you're on a Cadillac with the 300 compared to your 230 ;)

Fantastic, thorough review. This is my first video on your channel. I’m subscribed now! Question…I am a newbie regarding dual sports (my ride is a BMW R1200GS) but I am impressed with my wife’s new 2021 CB500X, our first Honda. So I’m really considering this CRF 300L Rally to use to be able to tackle trails I won’t take my monster bike down for fear of crushing myself. I’m just out for the backwoods scenery. It seems like this 300L Rally might be a fit. 👍 BUT, I am height challenged with a 30” inseam. I’m just learning about things like lowering links but not sure if that’s an “ok” thing to really be doing or just a dangerous hack. And are there other things I should be considering to get my feet closer to terra forma? My goals for the bike would be to toss on light luggage and go camping. No real aggressive or fast stuff for me. I’m too old to crash. 😁
@HondaProKevin
@HondaProKevin 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the kind words and support too, I really appreciate it! Oh yeah, I don't blame you one bit for wanting to hop on something a little smaller for basic stuff as your current ride is a tank when it comes to really hitting the trails. I'm not knocking the bike by any means as the R1200GS is awesome but it's big lol and I have massive respect for the pros out there that can throw them around like they're a small dirtbike off-road but I'm not that skilled lol! For what you're looking to do, the 300L models are definitely hard to beat and will do that and then some, while being a lot more fun than having to fight a big bike around. Have you sat on the 300L or Rally yet? Their seat heights can be deceiving because of how much sag they have when you sit on them is why I ask and you may end up not having to worry about a lowering link. My personal opinion on lowering a bike... Every lowered bike I have ridden, I absolutely hated and would not ride again lol! With that said though, I'm lucky enough to not be vertically challenged to where I need one and if it was either lowering a bike to ride it or not riding at all then I would most definitely lower it. There is no getting around the fact that it does seriously alter how it feels and handles though and not in a positive way, it slows down the flickability among other aspects drastically. I wouldn't say it's a "dangerous" hack but if possible, I would try every other route imaginable before going that route. I've seen guys have an upholstery shop cut into the foam of their seat and reshape it to gain some room there so that's always an option on getting your feet closer to the ground.

Great and thorough review! I'm in the market for a small dual sport and feel this is almost the perfect combo of features and cost, but I'm disappointed in the overly soft, low end suspension on the Rally. Very comprehensive video man, well done. I know the bike is a budget option, but really how much more would it have cost to put cartidges in the forks and a gas resev. shock etc. The WR250R wasn't that much more and had these. Replacing these with aftermarket options is ridiculously expensive. Also it would have been nice to blow out the bore a fraction and get it a true 300cc.
@HondaProKevin
@HondaProKevin 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you, appreciate the kind words! The WR250R was a lot of bike for the money and I'm still surprised we don't have it in the lineup anymore. Honda thinks that undercutting it by about $1,400 on the suspension side of things was worth it in the longrun as the majority of people, don't care about that. I know us enthusiasts always want more in aspects like that as we actually use the suspension and the bike like it was meant to be used but from my experience of selling bikes over the last 15 years - we're the minority. So from a business perspective, I can see why they do it but that's not to say I agree with going for the cheaper option over building a better bike overall, even if the MSRP has to jump an extra $1,000 or more. It'd be nice if Honda could offer an option, that way if you wanted to order it with XYZ suspension and pay extra up front for it then you can or opt for the cheaper setup if you're the type of person that won't really be using it. They already sell a crap ton of these things but they could move even more with that as a possibility. There's no telling what the logistics behind that would look like but I'd love to chit chat with someone that could answer questions on why that is or isn't a viable option when crunching their numbers.
@Superdisco199
@Superdisco199 2 жыл бұрын
@@HondaProKevin Thanks mate, I suspect the reason for the price difference (and the demise of the WR-R) was that it was made in Japan rather than Thailand like the CRF. At manufacturing level the components would be worth less $100. They're so close to busting open a new segment that you can smell it. As for the yamaha, the rumour is the MT03 might get a transplant into a T3 to compete with the 390ADV. Optional extra's tend to complicate inventory, logistics and manfuacturing, so they'd avoid that on a budget bike. A UK guy has made a good vid recently on all the suspensoin options and costings if you haven't seen it. (A bit scary $$).

If they made a 450 rally I would immediately order one. Im in between buying this or a ktm 690 for adventure riding. The extra power on the ktm translates to more fun and excitement for me but it needs more modificstions to make it a light adventure bike and whats nice about the 300 rally is that although its a little under powered it doesn't need much more aftermarket modification to be ready for adventure riding. The dream would be something as close to a ktm or honda works 450 rally as possible.

5:50 You stated 256mm rotor up front and 220 in the rear, that's actually just the 300L. The Rally has 296mm front and 220 rear. Great review, thanks. Personally I think that Honda has done a good job with upgrading the CRF. People will ALWAYS want more power and suspension, but the CRF was a great affordable all rounder before, and it's just that much better now...of course, LED marker lights would have been nice. I have an LED headlight on my NC750X and I hate it...it's a big complaint from NC owners.
@HondaProKevin
@HondaProKevin 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for bringing that to my attention! Every now and then I slip up and make a mistake but this one Honda gets to share half the blame on lol as they are pumping out incorrect specs. Here's where I pulled those numbers from so you don't think I'm crazy: hondanews.com/en-US/powersports/releases/release-e1a157df687ff71da1f64a190f07df6d-2021-honda-crf300l-rally-specifications . I know in my head that the Rally has a larger rotor up front but I just wasn't thinking when I saw the number they listed. It's a reminder that I need to triple check Honda's own numbers though lol! Oh yeah, you're 100% correct. No matter what they give us, we'll always want or "need" more but like you said, as a great all rounder that's affordable - it really is hard to beat. Aside from the headlight, how are you liking your NC750X? Did you go with the manual or DCT?
@1966johnnywayne
@1966johnnywayne 3 жыл бұрын
@@HondaProKevin Overall I'm liking the NC, but I'm definitely missing the '15 CRF250L that I replaced. I bought the DCT and likely have an "odd man out" opinion of it. It works well enough, although this past week I've experienced a few incidents of it failing to upshift beyond second without my manual input...I'm hoping that another oil and filter change will remedy that. The thing that I don't like, and it's probably just me, is that I feel less connected to the bike and consequently a little too relaxed just as one inevitably gets in a car or truck with an automatic transmission. But unlike with my truck, relaxing on my bike and failing to stay "switched on" has greater consequences. Also, and this was impressive, if I cruise around town at 70 km's I can get better fuel economy on the NC750 than I got on my CRF250...low 90's mpg (imp.).

Don't get me wrong, it's an awesome bike but it's almost 2022 and Suzuki needs to bring that platform to this day and age. It still sells well and updated, if done right, would only make it fly off the floor even quicker!
