It would be good to see the seller's ID when they draft up the Bill of Sale just to make sure they are the person selling you the horse is that person

Hey Stephanie I’m new to your channel & I cannot believe what I’m hearing wow I guess anything is possible right? I’m a little freaked out because that’s how I purchased my horse. I actually made payments on her to a facility out of state and they actually made sure she was hauled to me. She was already paid for & all I had to do was pay the hauler when she arrived. Everything worked out perfectly the only thing they did was charge me $100 to have her feet done but when she arrived that was not the case. Just one thing also another good idea before buying a horse investing so much try leasing a horse because gives you a sense of how much time & work it actually involves

Leasing can be a great way to get started, definitely. Wow I’m glad you had such a positive and seamless experience with your horse purchase! You’re really fortunate, I have friends who weren’t so lucky (hence the video lol 😆). Congratulations on your new horse!!

I used to recommend the Salmon Select Sale for horse buyers but I no longer recommend them. In fact just the opposite, I tell people to stay far away from that sale. They used to vet every horse as part of the auction and guarantee soundness and the sellers were intensely scrutinized before allowing to consign horses so you had no shady horse traders allowed. Three years ago I started to see really shady horse traders with reputations for all kinds of bad horse deals show up as sellers and they stopped the mandatory vet checks etc. You could not pay me enough to ever buy a horse from that auction now. Which is sad because in the past I bought a number of horses through that sale. Long time sellers of high quality horses are now also avoiding that sale as they don't want their good name tainted by a bad sale. I would recommend that people avoid horse auctions entirely unless they have many years of knowledge and experience evaluating and buying horses. Even experienced people can get snookered at horse auctions. Last year I had a friend with over 50 years experience in buying and selling horses get snookered at an auction by something he hadn't seen before so didn't know to look for. I am at the point where I won't buy from an auction anymore at all, the money for horses has gone so high the last two years that it has attracted the worst kind of horse traders to auctions. Remuda sales and dispersal sales from established breeders are often run like an auction but they are not the kind of horse auction I am talking about. Those I will still buy from especially if it is a breeder I have been dealing with for a long time and know well.

Hey Andy, great to have you comment! Oh man that's too bad to hear about the Salmon Select Sale - I remember you mentioning them several months ago. It's really disappointing to hear about them dropping their standards like that. The mandatory vet checks with some of these big auctions have always seemed like such an essential part of the process. Have you heard things about the Premier Horse Sales Auctions? I like watching them livestream when they have them and they seem to have pretty high standards. I'm also assuming they're considered higher end compared to most? Looks like they are similar to Remuda with their sales prices....I don't have much experience with auctions except through a couple friends - want to learn more though. Had a friend purchase one in Montana recently and so far so good. And totally agree about prices....was having this conversation with some horse gals who've been in it their whole lives and they were lamenting how expensive nearly all types of horses have become.

@@HappieronaHorse Premier does the Diamonds in the desert horse sale. Those are some of the highest quality horses in the United States. If people can afford to buy 1/4 of a million dollar horses then yes, Premier auctions are probably the only auction I would actively recommend that a new horse buyer would be OK buying at. They should still take someone with experience with them as new riders are often poor about self evaluation of their skill level and tend to over horse themselves. Especially at an event like that where many horses are performance bred. You don't want a new rider buying a horse that looked great and calm in the arena that is trained to hit the roof doing 90 with the slightest touch on the ribs no matter how nice the horse is, it is going to think they want more speed when they clench up and it will likely end in disaster. Horse prices this year were unreal. I sold the three I had got ready for spring sales in less than 24 hours after they were listed. I did not however raise my prices past where they have been for several years. As far as I am concerned nothing happened for me personally that would make my horses cost any more. I still have the same amount of training in them(usually 6 - 9 months), feed cost me the same as the previous year because I do hay on contract etc. This next sale year I will up the price because my hay contracts will cost more but it will at most be maybe $500 more per horse in spring of 2023 as I did not buy any prospects this year but I will in fall of 2022 most likely. Anyway I think it is unethical to try to bilk money out of buyers just because the market is artificially high. It is more important to me that my horses go to a home where they will be used and valued than the money is by far. The registered Andalusian I sold this spring is a perfect example, I told the lady who sells them for me that I wanted him to go to a girl who was an active riding student that needed a horse for lessons and he had to be an only horse as this horse bonds hard with its rider and it needs to be an only horse and it LOVES kids. So, she didn't advertise him publicly she went directly to a family she knew had an 11 year old daughter in riding lessons and this would be this family's only horse. The little girl came out and rode the horse that day as did the mother and the father came out the next morning and rode him and paid cash for him on the spot. I sold him for about a third of what I could have got for him this year had I taken him to an auction. Here is a short video of the lady who sells my horses for me taking him for a test drive in her arena(make sure you set it to highest resolution as she filmed it in potato quality on her phone): kzfaq.info/get/bejne/q62UZaaWtr2cg6M.html

@@AndyTheCornbread That's nice to confirm about Premier, thank you. Yes I think the lowest I've seen a horse go for was $18-20k. It's been fun to see more draft crosses and Gypsies do well in their auctions. I saw a lot of folks were balking on IG at a Gypsy taking top dollar at the last auction I think it was...and I could see if they tend to attract the performance QH types how people would be rolling their eyes 😂That's commendable you keep your pricing aligned with your product and prioritize the home. Super happy for you the spring sales went so well! Hay has climbed here also; we just got a bump in board due to increased grass hay costs. That girl and her family are fortunate to have gotten your Andalusian. Gosh he looks so light and responsive and lovely. 🤩 I can just imagine them having a fairy tale life together.

I think before you travel to check the horse out personally, you need to have a 5-10 minute video call with the seller where s/he is showing you the horse while discussing the relevant details. No serious seller should refuse such a reasonable request. Otherwise, you might be out travel and hotel money chasing after a horse that doesn’t even exist.

It's sad that this has become common practice in almost all online advertising... It's not just horses. I've seen people post homes and property that doesn't belong to them as well. When we were looking for properties, there were a few people who showed us land that didn't even belong to them - we had to make sure to find local records. You don't have that luxury with animals. Buyers beware.

Another shady technique: a buyer posting beautiful pictures and when you show up the horse is not as represented in the advertisement ( much smaller or larger, underfed, bad condition) It’s happened to me several times. Make sure that you get a recent, decent quality VIDEO, of the horse being ridden on both reigns. Look at the background of the video. Does it fit with the time of year? If your buying a horse in the spring the video can’t have summer, autumn or winter foliage on the trees. Ask questions if you see things that don’t fit with the sales pitch. Be a detective ! If the seller is offended then they are probably not honest. If something feels wrong, it probably is.

Do you find that the local economy affects the cost of a horse? In one part of the state, they may be more expensive than in another part of the state. That is what I am finding, or at least it seems that way in Texas.
@HappieronaHorse

I definitely think it does. Certain breeds are more or less common in some areas than others which has an impact…Transport is so expensive too, a lot of people don’t want to pay to have a horse shipped these days.
