And not one but TWO separate spaces to generate income to fund all your DIY! You can be the Ben & Erin Napier of New Zealand! I'm over the moon for y'all!

In Canada, we would call that a wood burning stove. They were used to cook on for generations before modern stoves/ovens came around

In Washington State we called it a wood stove. We cooked beans in a giant pot on top of the stove. We lined up our wet shoes on the brick hearth surrounding it. There was no way to fence it off, so we took turns keeping an eye on the baby.

My house has a chimney for a wood burning stove and in the great room we have a fireplace. We took out the woodburning stove, ‘cause it’s rarely needed in south Texas…but we were wishing we would have had it installed during the epic freeze this past winter. 😃

I'm American; but, lived at Manitoulin Island Ontario back in the late 80's n part of the 90's in a 2 story log cabin that was 100 years old. It had a wood cook stove & after it took a few months to get used to using it, I definitely loved cooking on it n totally miss cooking on wood now that I'm back home in Oklahoma. I'm thinking about putting a smaller version of it in my tiny home in the future.

Keep a kettle going on the wood stove when you’re using it. Wood stoves REALLY dry out the air, and the kettle will held add moisture back in.

What a terrific house. So much potential. I did quite a lot of work on my house and property many years ago on my house that was also built in the 70's. My son was very young like your son is Sam and he couldn't help me much. Now my son is 22 and whenever I need anything done I just call him up and we get it done in no time at all. I rarely do anything without him. Lesson #1: teach your son how to use his hands to build and repair things around the house. It will definitely pay off for him and (you) later. LOL...💔💔💔💔💔 Really lovin your new channel Sam. NZ is pretty much a mystery to most Americans. But it looks like day to day life there is pretty much the same as it is here.😁😁😁

One thing I think you should keep in mind. Necessity is the Mother of invention, but when things get tough Desperation is the father. I’ve been saying that for years. It may sound a little strange, but desperation can get you to do things you’d not otherwise try. Combine Necessity and desperation, and you can come up with some Great stuff.

It will be quite interesting to see your progress in the new home. You should watch the channel called "Good Simple Living" as they are a young family who sold most everything and moved from Washington state into a small camping trailer while they built a small home in their barn in northern Idaho. After they finished it (a small 2 bedroom home), they started building their forever dream home. They have done almost everything by themselves (Jeremy & Melissa). They built their home while homesteading and homeschooling their four children. They are a wonderful Christian family and I think you would enjoy watching their videos. It has been a year now since you started your adventure, so I'm excited to see what takes place as you begin your remodel.

My grandparents custom made house had included a bathroom that could only be entered from the outside. It was perfect after a long hard day of work where grandfather got dirty. He was able to shower and change into clean clothes. There was a laundry chute from the bathroom to the laundry room. He did not need to touch the dirty clothes after he had showered and changed into clean clothes.

I grew up thinking everyone did their own reno/building work. Meeting people who hired people to do such work was amazing to me. :) My folks could easily have afforded to hire things done but they just didn't. Dad was a Jack of all trades. (I thought that phrase was his alone for years - his name was Jack.) but in fact he was a home builder in the years after WWII so like the shoemaker's children who went without shoes, we often had a long list of things needing to be done, which was always pushed aside in favor of Dad's work or the emergency stuff that came up. When it came time to build a new home, they hired it done - it was a "turn-key" job. The house was fully built, decorated and furnished before we moved in. My husband has good general house-maintenance skills and has taught our son to be the same, so until he had to have triple by-pass surgery a few years ago, we never hired jobs done. I think DIY is fairly common in the states, depending on where one lives and what what does. I've been fascinated by your cost of living videos. For instance, that wardrobe you purchased would have cost about $80-100 US. How does one afford to save for a home purchase with the cost of living in the cities? Around the US, the cost of living is definitely higher in the cities for things like housing, but the price of a car is the price of a car, same with groceries, for the most part. Our son and his wife lived here in our home town until January when they sold their house and moved to Denver, CO. They're paying $1500 a month rental on a 2 bedroom, 2 bath apartment. We're getting ready to put a small addition on our house to add a 2nd bathroom and to add space to our formerly converted back porch area/family room so we can have a 4th bedroom and small sitting area, making that space a guest suite. We're planning to spend about $12-13k to do it. Realistically speaking, we'll probably spend at least another grand getting it finished. The cost of building materials is going up almost daily here in the States, so it could end up being substantially more, til all is said and done. Zoning and building permits just cost $560, compared to 12 years ago when we did a much bigger renovation and the permits cost not quite $100. Crazy. It was almost enough to make us stop the project! ;-) I look forward to watching y'all getting on with your many projects. Just remember that home renovations usually cost 50% more than you think they will!

Loved the tour. I grew up in a house that my father built at age 25. It was only 1,000 square feet. I had 5 sister and we shared one room. My mother had 13 brothers and sisters and we had 89 cousins living in the same town. Every weekend our house was the meeting place. Card games, adults dancing, and kids laying on the floor exhausted by the end of the night. I loved the closeness we shared and the fun that we had at bedtime. My parents worked very hard and we were blessed. We didn't have much but always had food and shelter for those who needed it. My parents taught us how to respect everyone equally and to help others in need. Your children behave like we did and it proves that you have done a great job raising them. Love your channel. Wish you happiness and love in your new home!

Our house is old (almost 100), and we've renovated nearly every room. Our biggest surprise when we moved in was a fully working toilet in our dining room! Just the toilet - no walls, sink, etc. The sellers had hollowed out a large cabinet, removed the back, added wheels and basically "rolled" the cabinet over the toilet when not in use! They did not disclose this when selling or I would have backed out of the sale! It was a shock to find, to be sure. I told my fiancé he had 3 days to get it out of my dining room :) I can't tell you how much bleach I used in the following days.... Anyway, hope all your reno surprises are GOOD ones!

I definitely would not put carpet in the bedrooms. Hardwood floors are a big selling point in America. Buy large rugs to put under the beds. The rug needs to be large enough to form a generous border around the sides and foot of the bed. We have a free standing wood burning stove much like yours. It is in the area of our house that looks much like yours and it keeps our heating bill down in the winter. I am looking forward to your DIY renovations.

You definitely have some work to get done. A bit of advice as I have been there. Sounds like you have a plan, but don't push yourselves to get it done. Take one project or room at a time, get it done and move on to the next one. You seem to be a great team that works well together so it should be a fun (?) learning experience for you all. Perhaps Atlanta could do some research and help with input on the kitchen plan. Definitely a challenge but try to make it a family fun thing too. Maybe paint some funny things on the walls before painting them. Looking forward to seeing your "new " home take shape. One thing that you didn't show us is the outside area. Only saw the laundry line. Do you have enough space for a proper garden? Fresh vegetables are always good. Many Blessings. Anxious for the next NZ Family Episode.

We built our first home, second home and now current home. We also flipped homes for years and have rental homes so, I found a great trick for removing wall paper. In place of special chemicals to do the job, you use the tool to punch holes in paper then spray with 1/3 Snuggle fabric softener and 2/3 water rum in then use puddy knife to scrape off. If brown paper remains repeat. It smells great and works great as well. Now we are older and need to downsize to smaller home, sad but when we built our current home we planned on grand-children but my only Son passed at age 16 so the house is so large for two older people to care for. It is so nice to see such a happy young family. God bless you all and good luck with all the stress ..

I just checked out the average temps for Taupo. Your July winters have about the temps we have in South Central Pennsylvania in our late spring (now). Your January summers are about the same late spring temps. We usually have frigid January winters, with temps averaging just above or below zero (F) for weeks at a time. Our July summers can be stifling at averaging 90 plus (F) for weeks at a time as well. To see Atlanta running around in shorts and barefoot in late April (our October) is eye opening, because in October it is sweatshirt or jacket, long pants and socks/shoes. Oh, and congratulations on your new house, it looks like a beautiful area.
